CHAPTER ONE — A NIGH PERFECT DAY.

Chapter One.A NIGH PERFECT DAY.Abby's POV.“What's taking you so long?” I muttered the words under my breath as I turned back, and glanced at the door.I'd lost count of the number of times I'd turned back, expecting Claude to walk in. He should have arrived about half an hour ago, but I couldn't tell what was keeping him. The priest who'd been standing for that long, had decided to take a seat. The hall that was dead quiet had begun to accommodate some murmurings from the people seated. This was exactly what I was trying to avoid when I asked him to come with me. However, he mentioned that he had a few things settle before coming. But then, he gave his words that he wouldn't be late. I mean, it's our big day, what could have been so important to him than this? I glanced at the clock, my heart thumping with each tick. If anything, I could feel the gazes of those behind boring into my skin, and I could almost guess what they were talking about. I sighed, dropped my head, and tight

CHAPTER TWO — A BIG LOSS.

Chapter 02.A BIG LOSS.Abby's POV.I buried my face against Claude's throat, sobbing softly as the emergency rescue team began to evacuate the bodies from the building which collapsed due to the explosion. The firefighters had arrived right on time to put out the fire, but the damage had been done. Maya had been brought out, but I could barely recognize her. “Why?” I sobbed. “Why did it have to be today? Of all days this could have happened, why did it have to be today?” “Don't go too hard on yourself, I'm right here.” Claude said, stroking my arm gently. “It is going to be fine. We'll go through this together.” “It is not.” I said, with a broken voice. “My parents are yet to be found. So, it's not going to be fine until I see them.” I lifted my face to him with tears in my eyes.“Do you think,” I paused, and glanced at the ruins. “Do you think…” I buried my face in my palms, and began to sob. The thought that something bad might have happened to them, made every nerve in my bo

CHAPTER THREE — A MISTAKE.

Chapter 03.A MISTAKE.Abby's POVI buried my face in my palms as I settled on the couch across the room. It's been two days, and yet there's been nothing. The emergency rescue team had been searching, but they were yet to find the bodies of my parents, not even one of them. As I sat there with my face buried in my palms, the scent of vanilla hit me. I lifted my face and found Claude standing in front of me.“Here,” he said, holding out a hand towards me with a paper in his grip.“What is this?” I asked, looking at the paper which he held out to me.“Why don't you go through it and see for yourself?” he said. “I am sure you'll understand better.” “No, just tell me what it is.” I sniffled, wiping my face with the back of my hand. “I don't think I'm in the right frame of mind to go through anything now.” “Alright then, I'll tell you what it is.” he dropped the paper on the center table, and settled on the couch facing me. “It is our divorce.” As his words fell upon my ears, my heart

CHAPTER FOUR — A PROMISE.

Chapter 04.A PROMISE.Abby's POV.“You aren't going to shoot me, are you?” I asked, my body vibrating to the thump of my heart. “You won't kill me.” “Well, we'll just have to see about that.” he said, with a shrug. “Now, sign the paper.”He ducked his head to the side. “I won't sign the papers.” I said, trying to steady my voice. “So, if you're going to shoot me, then go ahead.” “I said sign the papers now!” he yelled, shooting into the air. “Argh!” the panic pitched my voice to a scream as I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my ears with my hands. “Trust me, the next one will go through your head.” he said, with ice in his voice as he pointed the gun at me. “Now, pick up the pen and sign the damn papers.” He cocked the gun. At the sound, every nerve in my body seemed to shrink. I could barely meet his gaze for the fear of being shot at. Breathing heavily, I opened my eyes and swallowed hard. I picked up the pen from the table. However, my right hand trembled as I tried to put

CHAPTER FIVE — WE'VE ALL MADE MISTAKES.

Chapter 05.WE'VE ALL MADE MISTAKES.Abby's POV.As I heard the sound of footsteps approaching, I sniffled and wiped my face with the back of my hands. I knew that Lydia had been standing at a distance, watching me the entire time, but I just couldn't help it. I'd tried not to cry anymore, but thinking that I was betrayed by the very person I loved broke me. To make matters worse, I'd lost everything that I was supposed to inherit from my father.“Are you still crying?” she picked up a pillow from the couch, and settled right next to me. “I think you've cried enough, sweetheart.” She put the pillow on her laps, and stroked my hair gently.“Crying isn't going to solve the problem.” she added, her voice laced with concern. “I mean, you have been crying for so long, but nothing's changed so far. How long will you continue to cry?” “You don't understand.” I said, blinking back tears as I turned to face her. “You have no idea what it feels like to lose your parents, and everything that

CHAPTER SIX — A CHANCE TO BREATHE.

Chapter 06.A CHANCE TO BREATHE.Abby's POV.“Here, drink this.” Lydia said, offering me a glass of water while standing next to me.“Thank you.” I received it from her, and drank some water. I couldn't say exactly how I stayed without food for two days. Perhaps, the pain I felt was more than enough to fill me. But if I had decided to go one more day without food, then something bad might have happened to me.I dropped the empty glass cup on the dining table. She took it, along with the plates as she cleared the table.“I will be right back.” she said, leaving the dining room. Alone, I sighed, and scrubbed my face with my hands. No matter how much I thought about it, it didn't make any sense to me. I mean, he was the sweetest thing on our wedding day, and just two days after that, he became someone else… something different. “Abby?” Lydia called, tapping the table with a finger as she settled on a chair. “Yes.” I answered, returning to the moment. “Is there something wrong?” “I s

CHAPTER SEVEN — A BIG DAY.

Chapter 07. A BIG DAY.Abby's POV.I stopped walking, and drew in a deep, calming breath. Standing in the hallway, I looked into the room where people were gathered. A good number of them were having conversations with two or three other people, while holding a wineglass. For one, I didn't know if that was what I needed. The crowd just seemed to make my skin crawl. What if someone recognizes me in there? At the thought, I tightened my grip around my purse which I held in front of me. Coming down here was a mistake; I shouldn't have come to begin with.I turned around to leave.“Abby?” the voice came from behind. It was aunt Lydia's. She didn't even notice when I stopped walking with her. She was rather concerned about the party going on. Meanwhile, I froze, rooted to the spot. If anything, I knew it was only a matter of time before she would notice my absence, and return to find me.“Are you leaving already?” I heard her footsteps approaching me from behind. “Come on, don't tell me

CHAPTER EIGHT — A HEALTHY DISTRACTION.

Chapter 08.A HEALTHY DISTRACTION.Abby's POV.“Are we done here?” I asked, turning to face Clem.“I don't understand.” he said, looking more confused than he sounded. “What do you mean?” “Are you done showing me around?” I asked, making my words clearer to him. “If you are, then I have to go now.” “Isn't that too soon?” he asked. “I mean, we should get to know each other first, or don't you think?” “Your name is Artis Clem, and you're the son of Artis Yvonne.” I said, shrugging a shoulder. “I don't think there's anything else that I need to know. That much is enough for me.”“Did I do something wrong?” he asked, in a curious tone. “If I did, all you have to do is let me know so that I can apologize.” “No, you did nothing wrong.” I said, shaking my head. “If anything, I'm glad you showed me around, but I can't stay anymore. I have to go.” “There must be a reason why you want to go.” he said, looking me straight in the eyes. “I just don't get it. You say I did nothing wrong, but y
