Lucille pov I could have sworn it was him. I was so sure, I never forget a face. I rushed home to find the house empty, as always. My mom had left a note on the table, but I didn’t even bother to open it. I ran straight to my room and slammed the door shut. It was him, I was certain of it. Remembering the night he had shown up with those other men, I pulled out the business card from where I’d hidden it. As I stared at it, the memories of that night came flooding back. I remembered it like it was yesterday, walking in on them sitting with Patrick in the dining room. The way he had greeted me, the night he came to drop off a letter for Patrick... everything had been about Patrick. So why on earth was he at Marcella’s house? Nothing seemed to make sense. He wasn’t one of Patrick's employees, I know everyone of them, it felt more like a partnership. Or was he an employee of Marcella’s family? Did they have any business deal ongoing? But if so, why did their business seem so shrouded

Lucille’s pov "Hi." I stood there frozen, unable to utter a single word. Why was she here? In this town? Why now? "I… I should have called I’ll be coming today," she stammered. "I um… I had no choice." "What are you doing here, Laurel?" I finally managed to find my voice. "What? It’s..." She trailed off, turning toward my parents. They were watching us intently, trying to make sense of the sudden drama unfolding in their living room. "It was you," Laurel said, turning back to me. "You texted me. You told me about your career milestones, and I… I really wanted to see you. I’ve seen you on tv, granting interviews, you’re really soaring high Lucille, It’s been so long. I thought we could just be friends and see each other, even if it’s just this once." I looked at Laurel, she didn’t look too bad dressed the way she did but what did she mean by me? Me? I glanced at my parents, who were holding me under a heavy, questioning gaze. "I never did that!" I screamed, making sure they

Marcella’s pov My mother stood up slowly. I stared at her, frozen. I could read the raw fear, irritation, and judgment flashing in her eyes. The pet names were gone, her voice carried a terrifying, icy weight. "Marcella? What did Patrick mean? What was he saying?". I had always told myself I was brave enough. I thought I’d be able to make the right move when the moment finally came, but here I was, looking like a pale ghost now that reality was staring me in the face. "Cat got your tongue?!" She slammed her fist onto the table. I startled, jumping back in fear. "What did he mean by Lucille? That’s a female name right, you gay? No... no, that doesn't even sound real. Not until he called out a her name." She paused, her gaze raking over me with deep disgust. "Lucille? As in Lucille Parker, the runner? Are you two..." Beside her, my dad stepped away in pure frustration. He turned his back to us, rubbing his face with his hand, looking entirely defeated. This was so much harder tha

Lucille’s pov I could hear their fierce bickering and shouts echoing from downstairs. This was all because of me. For the first time in my entire life, my dad was actually standing up for me. Ever since I was a child, he had been the silent observer, quietly watching and listening while my mother barked orders concerning my life. She always claimed she did it with my best interests at heart, but something deep inside me kept whispering otherwise, that she was only doing this for what she stood to gain. I couldn't stand the suffocating heat of their argument anymore, which is why I had bolted upstairs. But the memory of how my mom had faced me the moment Patrick and Laurel left, the scene was still fresh and terrifying. When it was down to just the family, the mask had completely slipped. "You useless child!" she had screamed, rushing toward me to grab me, only for my dad to suddenly step between us. "Jolene... stop!" That was the first time I had ever heard my dad address my moth

Lucille’s pov It was my mom. She barged into the room holding a wooden spatula. My heart jumped out of my chest. I hung up immediately and shrank back, wishing my father were here to shield me as she stormed closer. "Now you listen to me, child... You haven’t told me the truth about what Patrick said. Is it true?" I wondered where my dad was now, right when I needed him the most. "Mom... I can explain." "Shut the fuck up and just tell me... Is. It. True?!" I couldn't hide the truth any longer. If Patrick already knew, what was the point of lying? I nodded my head slowly. My head down unable to meet my mum gaze. "So it is true..." She pointed the spatula at me, her face contorting. "Even when I asked you about it before and you denied it, it was all true..." Suddenly, my phone rang in my hand. In a flash of fury, my mom snatched it from my grip and smashed it violently onto the floor. The screen shattered, and I couldn't hold back my tears anymore, they poured down my face. I
