POV: Callum | The Feral Den, planning roomsThe maps take up two full tables pushed together and they cover London in the specific way military planning covers a city, which is as a series of defensible positions and access routes and choke points and vulnerabilities, and I have been looking at them for four hours with Cormac and Tom and three people from Fletcher's highland network and I am tired in the specific way that tired feels when it is not about sleep.Cormac and I have been in rooms like this before. We have been in rooms like this as opponents and as cautious allies and as reluctant collaborators and as the version of brothers we have been working toward for the past two years, which is not uncomplicated but which is real. I know the way he thinks about a map. I know where he sees openings and where he sees traps and how he assesses risk, which is differently from how I assess it, and the difference is useful rather than a source of conflict in a way that it was not for a l

POV: Callum | Vermithrax's territory, Canary WharfVermithrax does not meet in places that belong to other people and the building in Canary Wharf where I am sitting reflects this, which is to say it is enormous and permanent and has the quality of something that was built to outlast whatever temporary arrangements human beings made around it, which is the quality of everything the dragons build. The meeting was requested two days after the forged scrip crisis began and I accepted because refusing to meet with someone who currently owns forty percent of the land under the Rookeries is a position that requires leverage I do not have.Vermithrax is not what most people picture when they picture dragons, which is to say the human form he maintains is middle-aged and unremarkable and has the patient quality of someone who has been in the same room as a crisis many times and who has noticed that the crisis always ends and the person who waited longest is usually the one who comes out of it

POV: Callum | Neutral territory, Aldgate meeting houseThe meeting house in Aldgate belongs to no faction, which is why it was chosen, and it has the quality of spaces that have been used for neutral negotiations for a long time, which is a specific worn quality, the quality of furniture and floors that have absorbed a lot of tension and which carry it in their grain.Twelve people around the table. Parliament vampires on one side, four of them, Alteroni at the center with three others whose names I know from documents rather than conversations. Rookeries wolves on the other side, Cormac and Tom and myself. Two fae representatives, which Tom arranged through his community contacts and which required three separate security guarantees before they agreed to be in the same room as Parliament vampires. Two dragon intermediaries, neither of them Vermithrax, which means Vermithrax is expressing interest without committing, which is its own kind of commitment. And Mordaunt. Mordaunt at the f

POV: Jack | South London, neutral groundViolette finds me, which is not how I expected this to go.I have been tracking Mordaunt's network in the peripheral way that Silas's operation always tracked everything, which is to say I maintain records and update them and occasionally one of the records becomes relevant in ways it was not previously, and Violette has been in my records for two years as Mordaunt's longest-serving thrall, his personal assistant in the specific sense that means she knows everything and is bound by the venom bond to keep it.She finds me on a Tuesday evening in a pub in Bermondsey that I use for meetings that I do not want anyone to know are meetings, which means either she has better intelligence than I realized or she has been watching me for longer than I realized, and both possibilities tell me something. She looks bad. Thrall bad, which is its own specific kind of bad, the particular quality of someone whose body has been maintained by venom for so long th

POV: Fell | Final facility, ClerkenwellThe Grandmaster arrives in the evening and he looks like what he is, which is a man who has spent forty years leading an institution that no longer exists, wearing a coat that belonged to the institution rather than to him, carrying the specific quality of someone whose identity was entirely architectural and who is now standing in the absence of the architecture. His name is Harrow and he has been the Hermetic Order's Grandmaster for nineteen years and he found me here through the one remaining channel we have in common, which is a contact network so reduced at this point that it is essentially two people and a dead mailbox. He was not followed. He would not have come if there were a risk of being followed. This is one of the competencies that survived the Order's collapse, the ability to move without being seen, and it is the competency that matters least now."It's over," he says. He says it standing in the middle of the facility's main room,
