Holford's Studies

POV: Fell | Final facility, ClerkenwellThe development logs for today show everything on schedule, which is the same thing they have shown every day for the past three weeks since the coalition breached the building's outer level and found the facility empty, which it was because I had moved the equipment to the sublevel forty-eight hours before they arrived, which I had known was coming because the patterns of intelligence movement in London have been readable to me for two years and I read them correctly.I am alone. This is a fact I have assessed and accepted and which I have determined does not alter the validity or the timeline of the work. The Order is gone. Harrow is gone. The funding is gone. The building above me is abandoned and serves as adequate cover for the sublevel, which has its own power, its own ventilation, its own supply chain through a contact network I have been maintaining independently of the Order's structure for six years, because six years ago I understood

The Deed

POV: Valentina | Parliament steps, execution chamberThe steps are old stone and they have the quality of all old stone in public places, which is the quality of surfaces that have absorbed a great deal of human and supernatural weight over centuries and which carry it in their grain without showing it, the way places that have witnessed too much simply become what they are and stop registering individual events as extraordinary.I have been brought out at noon exactly, which is when the administrator's paperwork cleared, which means the two hours ran out at eleven fifty-eight and whatever Callum was doing in those two hours was not enough, or it was enough and something else stopped it, and I will not know which until this is over or I will never know which, and I am making my peace with both possibilities as I walk out onto the steps in the specific bright light of a London midday that has the quality of light that does not care what it is illuminating. All of London's supernatural

The Examination at the Home Office

POV: Alteroni | Parliament interior, emergency chamberI have been in this building for two hundred years and in those two hundred years I have argued in every chamber it contains and I have won most of those arguments and I have lost some of them and I have learned, over two hundred years, the specific difference between an argument that is about persuasion and an argument that is about record, which is the difference between trying to change the outcome and trying to document that you tried.Today I am trying both and I am going to fail at the first one and I already know it and I am arguing anyway because the record matters even when the outcome does not change, because the record is what remains when everything else is over, and I intend the record to be unambiguous about where I stood. The chamber is the secondary session room, smaller than the main hall, which is where emergency appeals are heard before full Parliament votes. Mordaunt is across the table with four of his bloc an

The Tortures of Lady Ravensworth

POV: Callum | Parliament stepsThe silver chains are Parliamentary issue, which means they are made for exactly this purpose, which is containing a werewolf who does not want to be contained, and they are good at their purpose in the specific way that things made by people who understand what they are making are good at their purpose, which is to say they are very good.I have been in silver before. The burn is something I have catalogued and accepted as a variable in the work of the past three years, a cost that comes with operating in a world where Parliament has silver and uses it. The burn from these chains is different from the burn of incidental silver contact because these chains are designed to maximize coverage and minimize the body's ability to adapt, and what that means in practice is that every time I move the burn intensifies rather than becoming familiar, the specific punishment of a restraint designed to make movement cost more than stillness.I am not being still. The

: The Duellists

POV: Dante | Parliament steps, immediate aftermathShe is ash before I process that it has happened, which is the vampire body's response to a staked heart, immediate and complete, the biological architecture of a species that burns rather than persists, and I have watched vampires die before in my nine years as a hunter but I have never watched my sister die and the difference between those two things is not something I had a category for until this moment.I have a category for it now.The crowd is doing the thing crowds do in the aftermath of something large, which is fragmenting, some moving away and some standing still and some turning to the people beside them with the specific quality of people who need to confirm with another person that what just happened happened. The Parliamentary guards are still managing the scene with the professional attention of people whose job is to manage scenes regardless of what those scenes contain.Mordaunt is on the platform.Mordaunt is six hu

The Voices in the Ruins

POV: Isla | Parliament steps, then the shelterThe Parliamentary tradition for executed vampires is burning, which is framed as respect and which functions as finality, the complete removal of the physical from the situation, and the burning happens within an hour of death, which means that by the time I reach the Parliament steps the burning is done and what remains is the specific grey quality of ash that has been scattered by the afternoon wind and which is settling in the corners of the steps and in the cracks between the stones.I have a collection vessel, which is what you bring when you know this is coming and you want to do the only thing that can be done, which is to gather what can be gathered. The vessel is glass and it is small and I fill it with the ash from the corners of the steps where it has settled most thickly, working in the specific focused way I work when I need my hands to have something to do because the alternative is standing in the middle of Parliament steps

The Progress of Lydia Hutchinson's Vengeance

POV: Violette | London, multiple locationsThe venom bond has been broken for eleven days and I am still learning what the absence of it feels like, which is not the way I expected it to feel, which I expected to feel like freedom and which actually feels like a room with the furniture removed, the specific disorientation of a space that has been organized around one thing for so long that the absence of the thing reveals how completely it structured everything else. The necromancer in Shoreditch was correct that it would not be comfortable. Three days of the breaking, which I will not describe in detail because some things are private even in the worst version of themselves, and then the specific quiet of a body that has been running on one system for thirty years and which is now running on its own systems and which is relearning what its own systems feel like.I feel it clearly enough to act.The execution happens at noon and I am watching it from the edge of the crowd with the spe

The Prisoner in the Subterranean

POV: Ash | Fell's facility sublevelThe chamber is underground and it has been underground since Fell moved us here after the coalition's first breach attempt three weeks ago, which means we have been in the sublevel for three weeks, which means we have been without natural light for three weeks, which is something my body has catalogued the same way it catalogued everything in the other facilities, which is as a condition to be managed rather than a complaint to be made, because complaining about conditions in facilities does not change conditions in facilities. There are four of us. Myself, two younger hybrids whose names are Wren and Dax, and a girl about my age named Petra who was transferred from one of the burned facilities three weeks before they burned it and who has the specific quality of someone who has been in the system longer than me and who has reached a different relationship with it, which is the relationship of someone who has stopped expecting anything from it and w

The Veiled Visitor

POV: Callum | The Feral Den, three days afterThe room I am in has a window and the window has light coming through it and the light has been doing different things over the course of three days as it moved through its cycle, and I have been watching it without registering it, which is the specific quality of the past three days, which is that things have been happening in my visual field without registering as information.I have not spoken. This is not a decision I made. It is something that has happened in the specific way that some things happen, which is without consulting me, the voice simply not being available, the mechanism of speaking having gone quiet the way a room goes quiet when the main occupant of it is gone.Tom has been in and out. Cormac has been present in the specific Cormac way, which is present without requiring anything from me, sitting in the corner of the room with maps and his phone and the operational business of the coalition that is continuing regardless

The Murder

POV: Fell | Facility sublevel, then lower sublevelRaines has been with the program for four years and he has been useful for four years in the specific way that lab assistants are useful, which is in the management of details that require consistent attention and which I have not had the capacity to attend to while managing the program's larger architecture. He has been less useful in the past three weeks, since the coalition's breach attempt and the facility relocation and the execution and the vitals crisis and the bond severing and the recovery, which has required every available resource and which has left no room for the specific kind of assistance that is actually assistance rather than the kind that creates additional work.Today Raines is in the category of additional work."The Order is gone," he says. He has said this before, in various forms, over the past two weeks, and each time I have explained the relationship between the Order's institutional existence and the program
