After the virus swept through, only a handful of families with the means to get medicine escaped relatively unscathed. Almost every other household lost someone, even if the whole family wasn't wiped out. Even those who survived long enough to get the antiviral treatment were left with serious aftereffects. The Robinsons had reliable sources of information. With the smog and other disasters making conditions worse, several groups of survivors were already heading south.Anyone willing to travel that far had probably run out of options back home. Once they reached the south, they were bound to compete with locals for food and supplies. But Westbridge didn't have much to spare either. If too many people arrived at once, trouble was almost inevitable.A notoriously corrupt official once said that refugees stopped being people. It sounded ridiculous at the time. But after years of natural disasters, people were starting to understand the ugly reality behind those words. No one had f

Marcus had already come up with a plan. "The volcanic ash has been hanging around for a long time. If it rains, there's a good chance it'll turn acidic, and we have no idea how long that could last. If it's strong enough, it might eventually eat through the roof. If you can afford glass, buy as much as you can. If you can't, dig a basement as a backup."The villas were two stories tall. Unless the rain was basically concentrated acid pouring down nonstop, a basement should still keep people safe even if it lasted for months. The homeowners might have stopped caring about a lot of things, but when it came to actually dying, nobody wanted that. There was no point envying the villas with glass enclosures. Digging a basement and staying alive mattered more. With the Oakhaven Gardens residents moving in, the neighborhood started up security patrols again. The teams were smaller than during the polar night, and each household usually took a shift once every three days. Most patrols st

Mitchell agreed and quickly passed the rule along.Starting the next day, anyone going out on house calls had to carry protective gear with them. There weren't enough suits for everyone, so whoever checked one out had to keep a close eye on it and make sure it came back. After another two weeks of nonstop work, Wesley's research project finally wrapped up for the time being. Nicole then went with Mitchell to Grayport Square for a public clinic. No one knew when the acid rain might start, and Nicole didn't want to take any chances. She asked Mitchell for some time off, explaining that she had things to take care of at home and wanted to stay away for a few months after that day's clinic. She wasn't officially part of the research institute anyway, and she had already spent a long time studying there. Mitchell agreed without hesitation. "Don't forget to review what you've learned when you get home. If there's anything you don't understand, come back and ask."The weather was brut

With the smog finally clearing, plenty of survivors had come back out to work, and the lobby of the square was packed shoulder to shoulder. The nonstop public announcements only irritated everyone even more.If they had enough food at home, who would choose to come out in this brutal heat just to scrape by? Anyone with a choice would rather be sitting comfortably at home. Those announcements played every single day and did nothing but wear on people's nerves. If the authorities really had resources to spare, people would've much rather seen a few ounces of relief grain.Of course, they were afraid of acid rain. But what were they supposed to do? No one was handing them protective suits. No one was feeding them three meals a day.Looking at the light drizzle outside, some people were practically cursing the sky. If it was going to rain, then just rain already!Instead, the sky kept teasing them with a few drops here and a few more there.Everyone grew more restless by the minute,

The people who had already been sheltering inside the lobby kept their distance, afraid of getting acid rain on themselves. Seeing how badly the injured were suffering, some still couldn't help pleading."Doctor, please help them.""If you don't, they're going to die."Nicole repeated firmly, "We've already told you what first aid to do. We don't have any medicine or supplies with us. What do you expect us to treat you with?"The lobby stayed chaotic. Mitchell raised his voice until it was almost hoarse. "Everyone, we're not refusing to help. It's been seven years since the apocalypse started. Where are we supposed to find sodium bicarbonate solution now? Blocking us here won't solve anything. Find clean water and rinse the burns as soon as you can. The longer you wait, the worse they'll get."One man, nearly crazed from the pain, suddenly lunged forward and swung at him. "Easy for you to say! Where the hell are we supposed to find that much clean water?"Nicole kicked him back
