Chapter 631

Howard was wheeling a body toward the operating room.Nicole hurried over. "Dr. Jones, are you taking him in for emergency surgery?""Emergency surgery? He's already dead."Howard looked exhausted. "This virus moves too fast. We can't see what's happening inside a patient just by looking at them, and what they describe doesn't always match the actual damage. That makes it hard to choose the right treatment."I want to perform autopsies on several bodies and get some solid data. It might help Dr. Chapman and the others narrow things down."There were barely any surgeons left, and Howard couldn't handle all of it by himself.Nicole didn't hesitate. "I'll help."Howard glanced at Zeph. "You too, young man. Come give us a hand."Nicole could kill without blinking, but the moment she saw the dead patient's chest opened and the damage throughout his lungs, her stomach lurched. She turned away and nearly threw up. It took her several deep breaths before she managed to force it back

Chapter 632

Before Nicole and Zeph got sick, not knowing whether they had been infected had kept them constantly on edge. Once they knew for certain, though, they actually felt calmer. They tried to reassure each other. "It's okay. We've got it much easier than most people."The one piece of good news was that Cola had pulled through. His symptoms improved a little each day, his appetite gradually came back, and before long, he was enthusiastically wagging his tail at all three of them again. In the end, being strong and healthy really did make a difference. At first, Nicole worried they might infect Cola again, so she isolated him in the room next door. But he kept scratching at the door and whining pitifully. With no other choice, Nicole called Mitchell. He had been infected too, but as a doctor, he knew what to do. He caught it early and started treatment while his symptoms were still mild. His voice sounded weak, but at least he wasn't bedridden. He never would've guessed that the fi

Chapter 633

Poppy's face was flushed bright red from the fever, and her voice was so hoarse that it sounded like she had coughed herself raw. "Zeph, I feel awful. Am I gonna die?""Don't say that. You're gonna get through this." Nicole took out some ice to help cool her down and reassured her, "Zeph and I are both getting better. You will too."It was a stark reminder of how much good nutrition and regular exercise mattered. Being in good physical condition gave the body a better chance of fighting off infection, and even when someone did get sick, it could make the illness easier to withstand.Compared with most survivors, the three of them were incredibly fortunate. They caught the infection early, started treatment quickly, and were otherwise healthy. Little by little, their condition was improving. After years of natural disasters, however, many survivors were already in poor health. Three years of polar night without sunlight had only made things worse, leaving many of them gaunt and u

Chapter 634

Grannyvine was a name Nicole had made up on the spot. She described what the herb looked like. "I don't know what it's actually called. Someone in my family paid a lot for it outside. They were told it was used in an old folk remedy."Wesley chuckled. "That's not grannyvine. It's called catalyne. It has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with respiratory infections, but it's extremely picky about where it grows. You usually find it along high mountain cliffs."The climate at those elevations is harsh and unpredictable, and that may be part of what gives the plant its medicinal properties. Cultivated varieties retain barely a fraction of that potency, so there was never much point in growing it commercially. "Then industrial pollution nearly wiped the wild plant out altogether. Over time, it disappeared from most modern textbooks, so it's no surprise younger people don't recognize it."Nicole nodded in understanding. The herb was nearly impossible to cult

Chapter 635

Nicole handed Valerie the cough syrup. "This helps with coughing. Have Dr. Jones try some."She was about to leave, but curiosity got the better of her. "I'm Dr. Jones's student. Are you his wife?"Valerie froze for a moment, then quickly explained, "No, you've got the wrong idea. Dr. Jones is like an older brother to me."The answer fit the melodramatic situation almost too perfectly. Nicole couldn't help wondering whether Howard was supposed to be the devoted second lead or one of the many unlucky men destined to fall for Valerie. For the sake of their teacher-student bond, Nicole briefly considered going inside and knocking some sense into Howard. Valerie clearly belonged with Jason, and getting involved with her could only end badly. In the end, she kept those thoughts to herself and left.Several days after recovering, Nicole, Zeph, and Cola still showed no signs of relapse, while Poppy continued to improve steadily. They had gone into the illness well prepared, but i

Chapter 636

For Wesley, a man who had devoted his entire life to medicine, to look this troubled, the side effects had to be serious."The dose is extremely high. It may kill the virus, but it can also damage the liver and lungs. Patients could suffer badly after taking it, and their organs may take much longer to recover. It could also weaken their immune systems significantly. In severe cases, some of the damage may be permanent."For now, that was only Wesley's prediction. They still needed to test it on actual patients."Professor, let me try it." Mitchell broke into another coughing fit. "I've been on medication for days, and I'm not getting any better. If we keep treating me the same way, we'll just burn through more of our limited herbs. I might as well try the concentrated dose."If it worked, they could start using the treatment right away. If it didn't, they would have to find another solution.Either way, they were running out of time.Wesley carried the responsibility of find

Chapter 637

The kitchen was cold and nearly empty. The cafeteria meals were enough to keep people from going hungry, but they weren't exactly nutritious.Even with the food Nicole donated, there were simply too many mouths to feed. Getting a couple slices of cured meat with a meal was already considered a luxury.Nicole made Mitchell a cup of soy milk, then cooked rice with cured meat and topped it with two eggs. She made enough for both Mitchell and Wesley. Howard already had Valerie taking care of him, and Nicole decided it was best not to get involved.Jason had a way of turning everything around him into chaos. Staying out of that situation seemed like the safest choice."Dr. Chapman, you need to eat well and get your strength back. You have to take the second dose in three days."For the next few days, Nicole took care of all three of Mitchell's meals and had Zeph bring them over at regular times. When there wasn't much to cook with, she made a simple egg soup with black moss. For the

Chapter 638

Several more patients volunteered for the trials. Aside from those who were already critically ill and didn't survive, the treatment cleared the virus in everyone else. The main difference was how badly the side effects lingered afterward. That left the research institute with an impossible choice. After several rounds of discussion, they documented the results exactly as they were and submitted the report to the authorities. They still didn't have enough medicine. Every city had sent teams out to search for more of the two key herbs, but so far, no one had come back with anything useful.Whether to use the safer treatment or stretch their limited supply far enough to treat more people wasn't a decision the research institute could make alone. If there had been another option, no one would've chosen to leave anyone untreated.Wesley didn't sleep at all the night they submitted the report. By morning, he somehow looked older, and there seemed to be even more gray in his hair.Nic

Chapter 639

The herbs came from a generous Westbridge resident in the first place, so why shouldn't Westbridge get a bigger share of the medicine? At this point, no one cared about pride. All that mattered was bringing enough medicine home. But news traveled fast. Before Westbridge's convoy even reached Grayport, the military base in Halloway and the government base in Jazenville had already sent their own teams racing toward the research institute.Everyone wanted their share, and no one planned to wait politely in line.Nicole wanted some, too.The medicine was complicated to make, with too many precise steps to learn just by watching once. One small mistake could weaken the final product considerably. After Wesley finally collapsed from exhaustion, Mitchell took over the research institute for the time being.Nicole went to see him in private. As soon as the door closed, she got straight to the point. "Dr. Chapman, I need enough medicine for 50 people. I won't sell it or trade it. It's

Chapter 640

Luckily, Nicole moved fast enough to dodge it. Otherwise, her shoes would've been covered in blood.Once she saw what had launched itself at her, she was at a loss for words. This dog really knew how to make an entrance. The last time she saw him, he showed up covered in injuries. Now, he was coughing up blood at her feet.Cola had already braced himself for a fight before realizing the culprit was his own sidekick. He immediately backed away several steps and let out a low growl, sounding thoroughly annoyed with the mastiff's antics.A moment later, though, his growls turned into worried whines. The two dogs started going back and forth in their own way.Dumbo stayed sprawled on the ground, coughing as he weakly wagged his tail at Nicole and rolled over to expose his belly. It had only been a little over a month, but the once-powerful dog was now skin and bones. He looked dangerously close to death.Nicole sighed. She sprayed disinfectant over the blood first, then thoroughly
