Chapter 1

"Jemma Johnston, you stole my son. And now you won't even admit it. Willie is my biological child. A thief like you doesn't deserve to be his mother. You're losing today."Linda glared at me like she already owned the verdict.Garrett smirked. "You chased me, remember? I stopped loving you a long time ago. And you're so cold you won't even spare my son? Hand Willie over. When everyone finds out what you did, let's see how easy your life is."Every eye in the courtroom locked on me.I didn't blink. "I've said it before. Willie cannot be your son."Six months after I married Garrett—twenty years ago—he cheated on me with his ex, Linda.Said it was a class reunion. Took her overseas. They vanished.I was a widow before my wedding flowers even died. And while I was breaking down, I found what they left behind—a screaming baby boy.Twenty years later, I posted that my "son," Willie, had passed the tests and joined the police force. That's when Garrett and Linda—dead for years—r

Chapter 2

No matter how savage the comments got, I stayed cool. When I didn't react, Linda's face twisted. Her hands shook as she yanked out a worn baby outfit."Jemma! You left this behind when you stole Willie! For twenty years, every time I see it, I wonder where my son is!"Her voice went sharp.Garrett's eyes turned red. "Jemma, you stole my wife's chance to be a mother! A monster like you doesn't deserve to live!"I looked at them, ice-cold. "I told you. There's no way you gave birth to Willie."I knew I was right. For Linda and Garrett to have Willie, it would take a genetic glitch. To them? I was just in denial. The livestream got uglier.[Shameless doesn't even cover it!][She stole their kid and won't give him back? She's sick. Karma's coming!]The judge frowned and tapped the gavel. "Plaintiff, provide real evidence.""We have it! A witness!"An older woman shuffled in with the bailiff. Linda pointed at her, voice shaking."This is Penelope. She used to clean Jemma's hou

Chapter 3

Garrett's face went red."Jemma, you still gonna deny it? Fine. You never remarried. You can't even have kids. So where'd the kid come from?"Linda shot me a look and pulled a recorder from her bag. "Your Honor, this is from one of Jemma's relatives."Static. Then a rough male voice:"Jemma stole Garrett's new wife's baby. Put him in the system as her own. Thought nobody would notice."Click. Silence.Linda smirked. "Well? Got anything to say?"I took a slow breath. They really thought twenty years erased everything. Thought they could just rewrite the story.Too bad.Their whole setup was about to crash.I met their eyes. Calm."Willie's custody is mine. None of your so-called evidence proves I stole a child. One shaky witness means nothing. And that recording? That relative's been dead three years. Easy to fake a voice when no one's around to deny it. I don't accept it."The judge gave a small nod.Linda lost it. "Jemma! I'm Willie's biological mother! You can argue all

Chapter 4

She finished smug and shot me a nasty look."Your Honor, Jemma's been imprisoning and controlling my son. That's unlawful confinement. She should be arrested today."Garrett nodded fast, practically glowing at the idea of me in cuffs.I let out a short laugh. "You're sure Willie personally called you?""Of course," they said together.I took a slow breath. "Wow. Good to know."I faced the judge. "Your Honor, Willie couldn't have made that call. He couldn't have signed anything. Their evidence is fake."The judge studied the document, frowning.Linda waved her copy at the camera. "Everyone, look. It's right here in black and white. And she's still denying it."The livestream lit up.[What's there to debate? He's over twenty. He picked his guardian and signed it himself.][Judge, just rule already. Give Willie back to Garrett and Linda.]The judge didn't say a word.I watched them, ice-cold.Linda snapped first, pointing at me. "Just wait. When my son comes home, you're don

Chapter 5

I faced the judge, calm. "Your Honor, I'd like to call my second witness—Wilson Kachmar."The judge approved right away.A thin young man limped in through the side door. Worn-out clothes. Small. Fragile.I pointed at him. "Linda. Garrett. You want your son? That's your biological child."They went still.Linda stared at me like I'd lost it. "Impossible! Stop talking crazy! My son's a criminal investigator with a police post. Tall. Handsome. Not a dog—and definitely not him!"I laughed. "Weren't you overseas? How are you this out of the loop? Police dogs have badges too. The one I posted? Willie's. You were dying to claim him. I didn't stop you."Her face drained of color. She kept shaking her head.Garrett finally snapped. "Jemma, are you insane? You dragged a dog in here to mess with us? I don't believe you!"I arched a brow. "Didn't you say I can't give birth? True. I can't. So I raised Willie. What's the issue? You were thrilled to claim the 'police officer son.' But now y

Chapter 6

Wilson went pale at how violent they got.I gave a light laugh. "Wilson, don't be scared. Truth doesn't need help. Show them your ID. Let them see your birth date."His hands shook as he pulled the card from his coat. He stepped closer and held it out. "Dad. Mom. This is my birth date."The livestream caught it instantly—it matched the birth certificate they'd filed.Linda's face shifted, like something clicked. Then she kept shaking her head. "No. That's impossible!"Garrett's face warped. He slapped Wilson's ID to the floor and turned on me. "Jemma! Did you hide my son? You drag in some fake and a dog to mess with me?"I crossed my arms, almost amused. "Look at Wilson and Linda's eyes. The brows. Practically copy-paste. And you still won't see it?"Garrett glanced at them—same shape, same line. His throat bobbed.I didn't add anything else. I just faced the judge. "Your Honor, I request Wilson submit the paternity test results. The DNA came from samples left during their pre

Chapter 7

Penelope, who'd just sworn I stole the child, looked at the chaos and froze."I—I..."She couldn't finish. The livestream got confused.[Okay, maybe they mixed up Willie because he's a dog. But their real son still ended up miserable, right?][Jemma only proved Willie isn't human. She didn't prove she didn't steal the kid.]Doubt started creeping back.Linda jumped on it. "Exactly! Jemma must've abused my son!"She even covered her nose, then forced herself to call out, "Wilson, tell them. Didn't Jemma hit you?"Wilson opened his mouth.Nothing came out.I looked at Linda still dragging my name and let out a slow breath."Fine," I said evenly. "Then it's time everyone hears what really happened."Her eyes flew wide. "Jemma, what are you doing?"Garrett stiffened, like he finally smelled smoke. He tried to move, but I'd already plugged the USB into the courtroom computer. The screen flickered. An old video popped up. Timestamp: twenty years ago.Onscreen, a much younger

Chapter 8

They had no idea. The second I found out about their affair twenty years ago—and suspected they faked their deaths—I started preparing for this day.I faced the judge. Calm. "Your Honor, this proves I did not steal Wilson."The judge reviewed everything again, then spoke clearly. "Defendant Jemma Johnston did not commit the act of stealing the child of plaintiffs Garrett Kachmar and Linda Sharpe."I looked at them, ice in my voice. "Still want to say I stole your child?"Garrett had gone pale. He swallowed hard. "This was a misunderstanding. Now that the child's been found, we're family. No need to keep this in court."He tugged Linda's hand. "Right, honey?"Linda caught on fast. "Yes. Jemma, sorry. We misunderstood. Let's end this."She shot Wilson a look of disgust, then forced a smile. "Wilson, your dad and I had no choice back then. Forgive us, okay?"Wilson didn't move.I cut in. "Wilson. Tell them. Tell everyone how you've lived these past twenty years."His eyes went r
