CHAPTER ONE "Dr. Venn"

The Harmon file was the last one on my desk and I was almost done with it.Mild inflammation, shoulder joint, same pattern I'd seen three times this month. I wrote up the treatment notes without really thinking about it - the kind of task your hands do while your brain is already halfway out the door. It was six-fourteen. Eli's bedtime was seven. I had forty-six minutes if the traffic on the east corridor was clear."Same time Thursday," I told Harmon, without looking up. "And actually do the exercises this time. I'll know if you haven't."He made a sound that was probably agreement and let himself out.I capped my pen. Rolled my neck once. Reached for my bag. That's when Petra knocked. She had that specific knock - three times, slightly apologetic, which meant she had something that couldn't wait until morning but she felt bad about it. I'd learned to read her knuckles over three years of working together. I set my bag back down."Come in."She pushed the door open just enough to sli

CHAPTER TWO "Graves"

The boundary gate came up on my left and I didn't turn my head to look at it.I felt it though. The way you feel a place you used to know - not in your mind exactly, more in the back of your throat, this low recognition that your body holds onto even when your brain has done everything right to let go. Five years. And still my shoulders pulled in slightly as we passed through, like they were trying to make me smaller than I was.Marcus was driving. He did most things the way he did this - steady, unhurried, aware of everything and showing you almost none of it. We'd made the two hours with maybe fifteen minutes of total conversation, which was fine. I'd used the time to go through the case files again and to make sure my face had finished deciding what it was going to do.It had decided on nothing useful, so I'd settled for neutral.Professional. Competent. Dr. Venn, Voss Medical Division, cross-territory consultation, here to do a job. That was all this was. That was all I was going

CHAPTER THREE "What's In The Blood"

The facility got quiet around four in the morning. Not silent - there was always the low hum of the medical equipment, the occasional soft footstep of the night staff doing their rounds, the distant sound of a door somewhere closing with too much care. But quiet enough. The kind of quiet where you could actually think without half your brain monitoring the room for things to manage.I'd figured that out on day one and shifted my schedule around it.Seventy-two hours in. Ten critical cases now - we'd added one overnight, a woman in her late thirties whose bloodwork had gone sideways faster than the others. I'd been at the display for two hours already, the results from all active cases arranged in columns, my notes spread beside me, coffee gone cold somewhere to my left. The pattern wasn't making sense. That was the thing. That was the thing that had been sitting at the edge of my awareness since the first day, not quite loud enough to name, and now at four in the morning with the corr

CHAPTER FOUR "Voss"

I drove back in two hours and nine minutes.I know because I checked the time when I passed through the Graves boundary and I checked it again when I pulled into the Voss facility's east lot, and the math was something I didn't let myself think too hard about because thinking about it meant thinking about why I'd been driving like that, and I wasn't ready to do that yet.The supply review justification had taken me four minutes to write up and route through the administrative system the night before. It was legitimate enough - two pending inventory sign-offs that genuinely needed my physical signature. I'd just moved them to the front of the queue in a way I wouldn't normally move them, at a time I wouldn't normally choose, for a reason I wasn't putting in writing anywhere.Marcus had seen my departure request. Of course he had. I'd sent a message through official channels, kept the language clean, confirmed I'd be back in Graves territory within twenty-four hours. His reply had been

CHAPTER FIVE "What Marcus Knows"

I'd slept maybe four hours.I knew because I'd watched the ceiling go from dark to slightly less dark to the specific grey that meant morning had decided to show up whether I was ready for it or not. At five I stopped pretending and got up. Cold water on my face. Coffee from the small machine in the corner of my temporary quarters that made it badly but made it hot. The mechanical routine of getting dressed, of making my expression do what I needed it to do, of becoming Dr. Venn again after a night of being too many other things.By six-thirty I was ready.By eight-fifteen I was standing in the formal conference room across from the council liaison with my documentation open on the table between us, and whatever the night had done to me was not visible in any way that mattered. His name was Aldric Senn. Mid-fifties, methodical, the kind of man who initialed every page and meant it. He went through my findings section by section without rushing, asked the right questions in the right o

CHAPTER SIX: "Tonight"

I drove faster than I should have and slower than I wanted to.The road stretched out ahead of me - two hours of dark highway and white lane markers disappearing under the car in a rhythm that should have been calming and wasn't. I had the heat on too high, and I hadn't noticed until my hands started feeling strange on the wheel. I turned it down. Small adjustments. That was what this drive was - small adjustments to things I could control while the thing I couldn't control sat in my chest like a stone.Marcus found something.Three words. That was all Damien had said before I told him I would leave within the hour. I had not needed more than three words. I had known - the way you know things you have been dreading long enough that they stop being fears and start being scheduled - exactly what Marcus had found. The drawing.Eli's drawing. Two figures in blue crayon on paper from his art pad, the kind he carried everywhere in his school bag. A tall one and a small one. And on the back,

CHAPTER SEVEN: "The Drawing"

I took the drawing from him.Not because I was ready to. Because leaving it in his hand felt worse than holding it myself - like it was still his to manage when it had always been mine to carry. I took it, and I looked at it, and then I set it down on the small table beside my door, face up, between us.The two figures. The careful blue eyes on the small one. The word on the back that I didn't need to see to read.I looked at Damien. He was watching me with the patient-specific attention he brought to things he considered genuinely complicated. Not urgent. Not demanding. Just present in the way he was present for things that required him to be fully there - complete stillness, all of him pointed at the same place.I said: "He's my son."Just that, first. A foundation before anything else. The word son in the corridor of the facility I had lived and worked in for three years, said out loud for the first time to someone who hadn't already known."His name is Eli. He's five years old." I

CHAPTER EIGHT: "What Marcus Brought"

The briefing room was three doors down from where I had been standing in the corridor holding Eli's drawing. I followed them because Marcus looked at me over his shoulder when he said Cora's presence would be useful, and useful was something I could be even when everything else was in pieces.I set the drawing face down on the table when I sat. I didn't examine why.Marcus had a folder. He always had a folder — physical documentation in addition to digital, because Marcus did not trust systems he hadn't built himself, and most systems fell into that category. He opened it on the table and began. The contractor's name was first. An entity registered eighteen months ago in a border territory with minimal governance oversight, structured specifically to obscure the chain of authorization. Marcus had traced it through four shell registrations to a primary operator whose name meant nothing to me but whose financial history meant everything to the investigation."The materials used to const

CHAPTER NINE: "What Eli Asked"

He was awake.I could tell before I opened the door — the quality of the silence in his room was different from sleeping silence, which I knew the way I knew most things about him, through years of paying close attention to the details nobody else would think to track. Sleeping Eli was complete stillness and slow breathing and the occasional small sound. Awake Eli was held quiet, a child who knew how to be still but was choosing it rather than being lost in it.I pushed the door open. The anchor nightlight was on in the corner. He was sitting up against his pillow with his hands in his lap and his eyes already on the door like he had known I was coming."Hey," I said."Hey."I came in and closed the door behind me. I looked at the floor beside his bed — the small rug, the puzzle he had left partially assembled near the foot of the mattress, Gerald's container on the bedside table where it lived every night. I sat down on the floor. Not on the chair by the desk. The floor, which put me

CHAPTER TEN: "Fine"

"Fine," I said.He had not been expecting that. I could tell by the way he recalibrated — not dramatically, just the small internal adjustment of a person who had prepared for a longer fight and found the door open instead. We were still in the corridor. The chair he had been sitting in was behind him, slightly askew from the wall where he had pulled it. The overnight lighting was doing its low warm thing around us. It was past midnight, and I had just come out of my son's room, and I was out of arguments that felt worth having."My terms," I said."Tell me your terms."I had run them on the floor of Eli's room while I was listening to him sleep. I had not been planning to accept. And then I had sat there long enough to understand that refusing the secured arrangement on principle while a network with a documented threat assessment had my name was not principled. It was stubborn. And stubborn was something I could afford when the only person at risk was me.Eli changed the calculus. H
