Kumba. Dinner was unusually quiet and with every going on it was no surprise. Lola had fallen asleep early after refusing to let either of us put her down all afternoon.Naya had taken Diane her dinner upstairs before quietly disappearing for the evening, insisting we needed time alone which I had arranged. Now it was just the two of us sitting across from each other on the dining table.I watched Gesare push a piece of chicken around her plate for what had to be the tenth time. She hadn't eaten more than three bites and I noticed it was becoming a pattern now, she could barely keep anything down and it was starting to worry me. She seemed quiet and pale, I would catch her staring at me with an expression I couldn't quite understand.Like she wanted to tell me something but couldn't tell me. I set my fork down "Okay."She looked up"What?""I'm calling it."She frowned "Calling what?""Whatever this is." I gestured between us."You have been somewhere else for days now.""I'm righ

GesareHospitals had become a second home to me by now, and I normally I hated it, every corridor held a memory, every waiting room reminded me of bad news and every doctor carried the possibility of changing our lives with a single sentence. As Kumba intertwined his fingers with mine while we walked toward the maternity unit, I squeezed his hand a little tighter."You okay?" He looked down at me.I forced a smile "I think so.""You don't sound convinced.""I'm trying not to be scared."He stopped walking right there in the middle of the hallway. Before I could ask what he was doing, he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear."You don't have to be brave every second of every day." His voice was soft. "You know that, right?"The lump in my throat grew "I just" I looked away "I keep thinking something is going to go wrong."He immediately wrapped an arm around my shoulders."Hey." I looked back at him "We are here together and whatever happens in there" He kissed my forehead

GesareThe first thing I heard was the ocean, the gentle waves rolled against the shore, their rhythmic melody drifting through the open balcony doors. A warm breeze slipped into the room, carrying the scent of salt and tropical flowers with it.For a long moment, I simply lay there with my eyes closed, smiling, then I felt it.A pair of strong arms wrapped securely around my waist, of course it was Kumba, I smiled even wider.Carefully, so I wouldn't wake him, I turned in his embrace. The morning sunlight spilled across his face, softening every sharp line I had once found intimidating, he looked peaceful which was a rare thing to see. I had grown used to seeing him restless in his sleep, some nights he would toss from one side of the bed to the other and other nights he would wake up breathing heavily before convincing me he was "fine."Sometimes he would mumble words I could never quite make out. There had even been nights when I had reached for him, only to find his side of the b

GesareThe drive home was unbearably quiet. The kind of quiet that settled between two people who desperately wanted to speak but no longer knew which words belonged to them.I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window as the lake disappeared behind us asTrees blurred into one another. The sky had begun to darken, heavy clouds gathering overhead as if the world itself couldn't decide whether to hold back or break. It suited my mood.Neither of us had said a word since we left the lake house.Cliff had stayed behind with Diane, they were going to drive up together, neither of them had tried to stop us when we left, there was nothing left to say.Kumba kept both hands on the steering wheel, his knuckles white against the leather. His eyes never left the road.I wondered if he was seeing it at all.Or if, like me, he was somewhere else entirely.Back in that lake house.Back in a confession that had shattered both our lives.A tear slid down my cheek before I realized I was cryin

KumbaI had looked at the ultrasound picture at least twenty times before we even made it home, It was ridiculous and I knew that. There was nothing particularly beautiful about the grainy black-and-white image. To anyone else, it probably looked like a smudge. To me, it was everything. My child and another child to the family. I still couldn't believe it.I slipped the picture back into my wallet as we walked through the front door.Gesare glanced at me."You have checked it three times since we left the hospital.""Four." She laughed."I knew it.""I just want to make sure it's still there.""The picture isn't going anywhere.""I know." I smiled."I'm checking anyway."She shook her head and walked toward the kitchen and I followed. She reached for the grocery bag we'd picked up on our way home. I immediately took it from her."I have got it." She stared at me."Kumba.""What?""It's a bag.""I know.""It's not a hundred kilos.""I know that too."She folded her arms."Then why are
