As Dahlia rose from her chair, her gaze dropped, briefly, to Lena’s hand resting on the table, to the ring catching the light from the window. Something moved behind her eyes, quick and complicated, gone before Lena could fully register what she’d seen, replaced almost instantly by the same composed professionalism she’d carried through the entire meeting. “I’ll follow up once the revised language is ready,” Dahlia said, and picked up her portfolio, and left the conference room with the same measured, unhurried steps she’d arrived with. Lena sat alone in the conference room for a moment after the door closed, her folder still open in front of her, the productive, satisfying shape of the meeting settling into something she couldn’t quite name.
