ALEXANDER POV "Mm…" Her breath brushed faintly against my jaw as she shifted slightly, and I realized, very abruptly, just how close we were. Too close. "They're gone," she whispered. I blinked, snapping back to myself like I'd been pulled from something dangerous. My hand was still at her waist. Her fingers still clutched my shirt. I cleared my throat and stepped back almost immediately. "Yeah," I muttered, forcing a calm tone that didn't come close to matching the pace of my heartbeat. I leaned out slightly and scanned the path. Empty, no footsteps, no voices, nothing. "They're gone," I confirmed, stepping out fully. She followed, and for a moment we just stood there, both of us breathing. Then we burst out laughing at the same time. "That was insane," she said between breaths, pushing her damp hair back.
