Semua Bab She Left His Pack and Found Her Purpose: Bab 21 - Bab 30

The courtyard smelled like centuries.Wet stone and moss and the mineral tang of water that had been sitting in the same basin since before the pack system existed. Sera and I descended the ridge on unsteady legs, picking our way through fallen masonry and root-cracked steps that had once been a proper staircase. The temple grew larger as we approached, its stone walls taller than any pack house I had seen, the archways wide enough for wolves in full form to pass through without ducking. The blue light pulsed from inside. Steady. Patient. Not the frantic, reactive flare of my own gift. This light breathed with the rhythm of someone who had been using it for decades.Sera's blade was in her hand. She walked half a step behind me, her eyes scanning the courtyard, the doorways, the dark windows cut into the stone. Reading the terrain the way her mother had taught her. Looking for exits. Counting entrances. Mapping a retreat before she needed one."Trap?" she murmured."If it's a trap, it

"Then we don't have time for the pool," I said. "Teach me what matters. Right now."Adaeze stared at the eastern ridge for three more seconds. Then the fear left her face. Not gone. Compressed. Packed into the deep place where old survivors stored the things that would kill them if they let them breathe."Inside," she said. "Both of you."We followed her into the temple chamber. She moved differently now, faster, the unhurried calm of the teacher replaced by something urgent and precise. She pulled a cloth from beneath the altar and unrolled it on the stone floor. Inside were objects. A smaller stone, twin to mine but uncracked. A length of braided cord. A clay vial sealed with wax. And a piece of parchment so old the edges had turned to powder."This is everything I saved from the order's last temple. The one Dorian's predecessor burned forty years ago." She knelt. "The cord is a focus amplifier. Weaker than the stone but functional. Wear it until yours is repaired." She pressed the

The pass tried to kill us in the first hour. The trail was barely a trail. A goat path carved into granite by centuries of water and wind, switching back and forth up the face of the ridge in zigzags so steep that each step was a negotiation between gravity and stubbornness. The stone was cold and sharp under my bare feet. Within twenty minutes, I was leaving blood on the rock. Within forty, the cuts were closing faster than I could make them. The healing gift, at least, was good for something mundane.Sera climbed like her mother had trained her to. Efficient. Silent. She used her hands on the steep sections and her blade as a lever in the cracks, pulling herself up with a coordination that made my scrambling look like a wounded animal's escape attempt."You climb like a kitchen worker," she said from above me."I am a kitchen worker.""You're a magical wolf goddess who can shatter souls with her hands. Maybe lead with that.""I'll add it to my introduction."The banter was thin. A m

Kael's door was unlocked. That was the first wrong thing. An Alpha's quarters were never unlocked. The door should have been bolted from inside, sealed with the territorial instinct of a wolf who protected his den the way he protected his throat. But the latch gave under my fingers without resistance, as if the man inside had stopped caring what came through.I pushed the door open. The smell hit me first. Not the scent I remembered. Not pine and woodsmoke and the warm, specific musk that had made the mate bond sing beneath my ribs five days ago. No. Eight days ago. Eight days since the full moon. It felt like a century. This scent was wrong. Sour. The sharp, medicinal smell of a body fighting itself. Sweat and fever and something underneath that my healer's instincts identified before my conscious mind caught up. Decay. Not of flesh. Of something deeper. The smell of a wolf dying from the inside. The room was dark. One candle on the bedside table, burned down to a stub, the flame gut

The howl woke the pack house.I heard it in the aftermath. The distant sound of doors opening. Footsteps on stone. Voices rising from confused murmur to urgent alarm. The Alpha's wolf had howled for the first time in eight days. Every wolf in Silver Ridge had felt it, the way you feel thunder in your chest before you hear it with your ears.Which meant the guards would be here in minutes."Can you stand?" I asked.Kael pushed himself upright. His arms shook. The color was already returning to his skin, the grey retreating beneath the golden-brown I remembered, but he was still weak. A man who had been dying thirty minutes ago didn't become a warrior by morning. He was alive. He wasn't strong."I can stand." He swung his legs off the bed. His bare feet touched the cold floor and he winced and then steadied and then looked at me and the expression on his face was something I had to look away from because it contained too much for a room this small."Don't," I said."Don't what?""Don't
