CHAPTER 94: THE SECOND CAMERA

THE SECOND CAMERAThere was no sound in the room anymore. Ethan was looking at Blake and still kept his hand hidden below the table's edge. They failed to notice the blinking red dot in the corner — it blinked once, blinked twice, then disappeared. Finally, Blake let go a heavy sigh. "So, what do we do?"Ethan shrugged. "I don't know.""That's comforting.""I know."Blake smiled a little. Suddenly, his phone started vibrating. He pulled it out and read the message from Aaron.COME HOME. NOW.His smile vanished."What?"Ethan noticed right away. "Is that Aaron?"Blake nodded. "He wants me to return home.""Any reason why?""Probably."Ethan got up from the chair. "Then I'm coming with you."Blake looked at him. "You sure?""No." Ethan quickly grabbed his backpack. "But I'm still coming."Blake smiled wryly. "Are you insane?""Probably."They left the classroom together. They did not notice the security camera above the hallway.---Across the city, Aaron threw the photograph on the t

CHAPTER 95: THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERA

THE PERSON BEHIND THE CAMERAThomas' eyes never left the screen in front of him. For a few seconds, he couldn't breathe. It was a grainy video captured by some camera. There was a hooded person standing under the flickering light outside the drugstore. And on his neck was hanging the silver chain — that same chain that he wore almost every day during the last two years."That's..." the officer next to Commissioner Hawthorne started."Yes, I know." Hawthorne leaned over closer to the screen. The image wasn't clear — the face of the person was barely recognizable beneath his hood, and from this angle he couldn't be sure who it was. But the chain was clear. And he recognized it. Just not on Thomas. On somebody else."Play the footage one more time."The officer hesitated. "But sir, we've already viewed it three times.""Well, view it the fourth time."The images started rolling backwards. There was the drugstore. There was Aaron and Jake entering it through the rear. Several minutes pass

CHAPTER 96: BEFORE MIDNIGHT

BEFORE MIDNIGHTNeither of them moved for several seconds. The message was still on Ethan's phone.YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.Underneath it was another message.AFTER THAT, THE COMMISSIONER GETS EVERYTHING.Blake looked slowly at Ethan. "What exactly do they have?""I don't know.""You said you believe they have the whole video.""I said I believe."Gina walked towards them and held out her hand. "Let me see." Ethan gave her the phone. She read both messages twice and handed the phone back. "Whoever that person is, he doesn't want to see Aaron and Jake arrested."Blake frowned. "Then what does he want?"Leverage. Gina glanced at the window. "He wants something from them."Ethan couldn't think fast enough. "What could they possibly want?"Gina remained silent. But then Blake's expression changed. "The drugs."Ethan looked at him. "What?""Aaron's drugs." Blake stepped forward. "If somebody stole them, maybe this is the reason why this has all happened."Ethan recalled Jake's words. They

CHAPTER 96: THE OLD TRAIN STATION

THE OLD TRAIN STATIONIt seemed like a place not worth being at after midnight. Cracked road and broken streetlamps led to the abandoned station, which was completely engulfed by rusted railroad tracks going into the darkness. The vegetation swallowed the pavement around the station.Gina carefully drove her car near the abandoned station."This place is creepy," Blake muttered.Ethan glanced through the window. "Can't disagree with you on that."Gina parked in the parking area and switched off the engine. The sudden silence sounded heavier than the car noise. Nobody moved for some time. Then Gina turned to her friends. "None of us leave the car alone."Blake nodded. Ethan took out his mobile. 11:31. The message was delivered. They were here."Hello?" Ethan shouted through the window. His voice got lost in the darkness. Nobody answered.Blake directed his gaze toward the abandoned building. "Maybe whoever sent these messages is not here."All of a sudden some metallic noise echoed ins

CHAPTER 98: NO PLACE TO HIDE

NO PLACE TO HIDEEthan had never run that fast in his life. It was hurting his lungs and legs, but he kept running, even though his body screamed for him to stop. From behind, there were steps hitting the pavement."Faster!" Thomas shouted."I'M TRYING!"Blake caught Ethan by the arm and pulled him around the corner as another gunshot rang out. BANG! Ethan jumped. "Jesus!""Keep moving!" Blake shouted. They were running between the two old buildings, stepping on the puddles forming in cracks of the pavement. Gina was following them close behind. "Where are we going?" she shouted.Thomas looked behind him. "I don't know!""You brought us here!""I KNOW!"Another shot rang out behind them. Thomas instantly ducked. "Fuck!"They reached the end of the alleyway and stopped there. There was a chain-link fence blocking their path. Ethan stared at it. "You've got to be kidding me."Gina turned around. Steps were getting louder behind them. "They are catching up with us."Blake climbed on the

CHAPTER 99: RUN AS FAST AA YOU CAN

RUN AS FAST AS YOU CANMorris drove like a desperate man. Tires squealed as he spun the cruiser into the next turn, missing a delivery truck and speeding down the empty street."Ethan, Jesus!""Dude.""Do you want me to not worry when you're driving like a madman?""Yeah.""You're not making me feel better!"Blake looked through the rear window. Three SUVs were following them. "They're catching up!""I know.""How are they following us if they're three streets behind?""Because they don't want that memory card reaching the commissioner.""You really are working for Hawthorne, then?""He's the one who sent me after you.""So why didn't he come himself?""Because he can't.""Why?"Morris' expression grew darker. "Because someone from the department is watching him."Silence fell into the car. "Then he is trapped too?""Not exactly. He's investigating the sheriff. But he needs evidence."Thomas held up the memory card. "So he sent you because he needs this.""Exactly."Horn honked behind

CHAPTER 100: THE COMMISSIONER'S REVENGE

THE COMMISSIONER'S REVENGECommissioner Daniel Hayes stood at the big window of his office and watched the police station below him. The day was late and the sun was already setting behind the building. Officers walked along the parking lot, talking in small groups. It all seemed quite normal to Hayes.Except, it wasn't. Not for the first time in his life, someone had put Hayes into an awkward position, where he was unable to do anything to help his department. And this someone was Sheriff Marcus Reed.Hayes turned away from the window and went straight to his desk. The thin brown folder sat on it. Hayes watched the folder for a few moments and took it off. The folder contained pictures. One picture was of the drug store. Another was of the elderly owner. Third one was of Jake Sanders and Aaron Thompson.Hayes looked at it for a few seconds. "Two bastards," he muttered and threw the picture on the desk. The surveillance video had provided more than enough proof. The faces were clearl

CHAPTER 101: A WARNING

A WARNINGThe following morning, the Sanders house seemed quiet in an unusual way. Ethan was sitting at the kitchen table with an open textbook in front of him, however, in the last ten minutes, he hadn't read a single page. His eyes kept moving towards the clock. 8:17. He needed to start preparing for school, instead of being lost in the phone. There wasn't any message from Jake.He frowned and tried calling his brother once again.CALLING…The phone rang several times until the call went straight to voicemail. Ethan sighed and put the phone on the table. "Come on, Jake." He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his face.Since the day of the visit from the police, things started to change. He knew that Jake had something to do with Aaron somehow – he was aware of the drugs, the midnight meetings and the strangers who sometimes appeared, demanding something from his brother. However, murder was another matter entirely. The memory of that day still echoed in his mind: Aaron raising the

CHAPTER 102: THE COMMISSIONER'S MOVE

THE COMMISSIONER'S MOVEHayes paced behind the big window of his office and looked down on the town. From his height, the place seemed peaceful. Cars were driving along the streets. Pedestrians crossed the roads. All businesses were starting to open their doors for the morning work. There was nothing in the city suggesting that just a couple of hours ago, two young men came to his station, defied the law, and went out laughing.Hayes' jaw tightened. He turned away from the window. The report of the drugstore case was lying on his desk. Two suspects – Aaron Thompson and Jake Sanders. Murder, drug trafficking, assault, and plenty of evidences against them. Yet they were free.Hayes grabbed the report and threw it on his desk. "Unbelievable."Morris stayed silent behind him. He was standing there for nearly five minutes already and watched his superior pacing around."They didn't even try to hide it," Hayes continued. "The sheriff takes an envelope, makes a phone call, and all traces of

CHAPTER 103: THE MESSAGE

THE MESSAGEBlake held the cell phone in his hands. The display had gone black, but the words were still imprinted in his memory.YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR BROTHER IS INVOLVED IN.And below it—ASK HIM ABOUT THE DRUGSTORE.Blake's finger lingered over the screen. There were several seconds of silence."Blake?"Blake turned. Ethan was staring at him from the opposite side of the desk. "You okay?""I'm fine."Blake quickly locked his phone. "Yeah."Ethan squinted. "You don't look fine.""I am."Tom shifted from his side. "And we've all heard this before somebody went completely crazy."Blake smiled. "Seriously. I'm fine."The teacher threw a book on the desk. "Could we please have one lesson without you guys whispering?"Tom instantly sat up straight. "Yes, sir."The teacher gave him a look before turning to the board. Blake hid his phone under the table. He still felt his heart racing abnormally. He shot a look at Ethan. Should he tell him? Maybe. But if Ethan knew nothing about Jake, t
