The engines roared closer, tires crunching over gravel and wet leaves just beyond the tree line. Jenna grabbed her rifle from the table while Dean shoved spare magazines into his vest. The safe house air thickened with the smell of gun oil and damp wood. Lily moved fast, sliding a fresh clip into her pistol, her jaw set tight. Elena already had the tablet tucked under one arm and a small pack of drives slung over her shoulder. Alex positioned himself at the front window, peering through a gap in the boards."Two vehicles," he said, voice low and even. "Coming in slow. They know we're here."Jenna felt the pulse in her throat match the low thrum of the collars. No time to second-guess. She crossed to the back door and cracked it open, checking the narrow path that led into the thicker woods. Dean gave a quick nod and they moved out single file, boots silent on the wet ground.
