I got a call from the doctor’s office with our test results. I decided to do blood work too, I told Jason it was to check if I had all my minerals and vitamins. That I suspected my iron was down. But I was actually testing if I was pregnant. I got home and put all the envelops on the counter not having looked at them once. The day got busy, I got the kids from school and headed to my room to print some documents the school emailed us to fill out. I like to get everything done for the next day as soon as possible.Jocelyn flew into my room historically, throwing papers at me.“What is this?” she said tears streaming down her face. Her reaction confirmed the results. But I bent down to look.Positive“Jocie, let me explain” I said desperatelyShe sunk down on my bed “Mom, what the hell has been going on. Did you leave dad for Jason. How can I trust those results are true?”I looked at her, realising that I may have to share history with her that I never thought I would have to share.“

Jason stood there for a couple of seconds. “I’ll go find her.” I didn’t move. Timothy came closer. “Mom…” I looked down at him. “Timothy, I’m sorry.” He stepped into me and took my hand. “Are we going to be okay?” I smoothed his hair, my chest tightening in a way that felt worse than anything I’d felt with Chris. “We have to be. I would go to the ends of the earth before I lose one of you. Even if I’m the one who messed up. I will always do everything I can to stay close to you.” “How is Uncle Jase Jocelyn’s dad?” I blinked at him. “Bud… I was young. Traveling with your dad and Jase on and off. There was a time I loved them both. Just once… just one time when everything was messy and unclear. Your dad and I weren’t really together yet. He was seeing other people too. But when we got serious, I never even thought… not once… that someone else could be Jocelyn’s dad.” He searched my face. “Did you do the test because they’re so alike?” “You see it too, huh?” He let out a slow b

It’s been four years since the day Jocelyn left us. We never heard from them again. Jason and my marriage has barely been surviving. We had a baby girl who is almost turning four in just a few weeks. We have been pouring everything into our work and the kids. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Out of all the things I could be worrying about. I worried the most about me and Jason. I felt him stir next to me and had to choose to look. We avoid looking at each other these days. We avoid being in the same rooms. I took a chance and turned to look at him, as my head moved his way I met his gaze. “How long have you been awake?” I asked him, feeling a bit startled “The whole night” he said coarsely. I did not know how to respond. “Rach, I almost had an affair yesterday” I turned to look at him “I’m sorry, its my fault” He drew closer almost touching me, my whole body flinched. “Rachel, I need you. Please. I don’t want to go in like this” I saw the plea in his eyes “

Jason and I made our way to the cottage, but to our dismay it was very different from the last time we saw it. It had security everywhere. Definitely not giving guesthouse vibes anymore. My breath hitched when I saw my little girl. She was thin and gaunt, with three men around her, just sitting outside writing in a book. My whole body felt like it wanted to run to her. “Jase…” “I see,” he said briskly. He got on the phone. “Mr O’Neil, have you ever heard of Chris’s residence in Hemming Port? Well, it’s like Fort Knox. You don’t, by any chance, have a way to help us get in?” We headed to a pub at the edge of town, both of us on edge, watching everyone, wondering who might be connected to Chris. Who might recognise us. About four hours later, the two men we met earlier, dressed in black, came in to meet us. “We scouted the house and have a plan. Mr O’Neil says your deal is complete. The location is more than what we need. We will retrieve your daughter and bring her to yo

Edith came in a while later with a man I assumed was her husband.“Rachel, Jason, this is my husband. We’ve spoken and agreed to help, but we need to be on the same page.”“Oh thank you, thank you,” Jason and I said together. “Anything you need.”Her husband stepped forward. “We need everything you know. Names of the families. Everything about Chris. We are not usually involved in this kind of trouble, but we have regulars with connections. We might be able to help from our side.”“We can’t expect you to go through all of that,” I said.“You don’t have a choice,” Edith replied gently. “We are taking a risk. We have family and workers here. You said these men are capable of a massacre. We need to protect everyone here and move quickly.”She gestured to her husband. “Ranger is close friends with our sheriff,” she said with a soft chuckle. “Imagine his surprise when we asked for a background check. Us, the simpletons.” She laughed again. “He made a call. Are you this man?” she asked, han
