Chapter 1

The room, with its curtains that had remained unopened for half a month, was cold. In fact, it was so cold that it jolted me awake. After waking up, I was dazed for a long while. My scalp and limbs still seemed to throb with pain. Then, I jerked out of bed and rushed into the bathroom. When I saw my reflection in the mirror and saw that I was unharmed, I burst into tears.I was reborn! Before long, the sound of a car came from the front yard. I pulled back a corner of the curtain and looked down at the people below. Instantly, a surge of hatred rose from deep within. After they made their way into the house, my adoptive parents' expressions became tinged with sadness. They looked completely different from when they were outside. The excitement I had just seen on their faces from upstairs had vanished. My adoptive mother, Vivian Mason, wrapped an arm around my shoulders affectionately. "Beth, are you still upset? I know Belle's death hit you hard, but life has to go on."When she

The gentle expressions on my adoptive family members' faces were something I had never seen before. No… That wasn't quite right. It wasn't that I had never seen it. It was just that they had never shown me that expression. That kind of affection belonged only to my cousin, Isabelle Cox.Isabelle was the little princess everyone envied. When people mentioned the Cox family of Norvale, the first thing that came to mind wasn't their thriving business but their precious daughter.Ever since she passed away, my adoptive parents seemed to treat me like I was their own daughter. They cared about my feelings and took the trouble to learn my preferences. They were willing to give me the love and sense of security I had always lacked. In my previous life, I lapped it all up gratefully like an idiot. I did whatever they said, hoping things would stay this way forever. In reality, I ignored the fact that they had never liked me in the past. They had often treated me like I was air in the house

I spent the entire night drawing up plans in my room. Then, on the fourth day, I went out carrying a thick volume of hand-copied scriptures. I even put it in a fine wooden box and wrapped it up with a piece of red cloth.I went to a shrine and had the two maids who followed me out bury it in front of Isabelle's tombstone. When they were busy doing that, I retrieved the items I had ordered two days earlier and secretly hid them away. When I got home, Vivian came up to greet me, holding the doll in her arms. She took my hand and said gently, "You're our precious darling, Beth. Come on, I'll take you to see your room."The curtains were wide open now, and the floor-to-ceiling windows made the whole room look bright and spacious. Yet somehow, the sunlight still couldn't quite reach inside. On the dark brown willow bed meant solely for the doll were expensive silk beddings. The bed wasn't small. In fact, it could fit an adult. At the center of the room hung a dazzling crystal chandel

"Ugly freak!" I muttered under my breath, flipping the doll over and covering it with a pillow. For now, I wasn't sure whether Isabelle, who was trapped inside it, could somehow communicate with my adoptive parents. So, I had to test it out carefully.I put on a mask and gloves. Then, I carried Vivian's small bottle of aromatherapy oil into the bathroom carefully. After putting the bottle in scalding hot water, I heated the contents inside until they melted. Next, I poured everything, including the tiny fragments of talisman paper at the bottom, into the toilet and flushed it away. After I was done, I quickly took out the aromatherapy oil I had bought and placed it in the original spot. I added a few drops of diluted lilac essential oil into it.Throughout the entire process, my heart pounded so hard that it felt like it might leap out of my throat. I was terrified that something might go wrong and that they might notice even the tiniest of clues. This bottle was almost identica

Chapter 5

My gaze moved downward, and I saw her mouth split into a grotesque arc. A pair of blood-red fangs that gleamed eerily protruded from her mouth. Those fangs were aimed straight at my throat! If she bit me, it would severely damage my soul's attachment to my body! She seemed a little surprised, like she was not expecting me to wake up so suddenly. However, that surprise quickly turned into a vicious and greedy longing. The doll sped up and lunged straight at me.I instinctively tightened my grip on the object hidden beneath the blanket. My heart lurched.Damn it!I suddenly realized that my entire body was stiff. I couldn't move at all! An icy chill shot from the soles of my feet straight to the top of my head. Cold sweat poured down my forehead.I could only watch helplessly as her teeth were about to pierce my skin. She came closer and closer…At that critical moment, I summoned all my strength and used the sacred item in my hand to slice open my palm. Her fangs were less t

Chapter 6

My father was Isabelle's uncle and Jasper's older brother. He was a prodigy in business. Sadly, he passed away in his prime before the age of 40.After my father's death, Isabelle's parents seized all of my mother's assets. They even used underhanded means to push her into a dead end.In the end, she could only secretly leave me at the doorstep of the Cox residence after giving birth to me. She hoped they would take me in and have mercy on me.However, in order to prevent me from taking even a fraction of the inheritance, they immediately sent me off to an orphanage. This went on until Isabelle fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with incurable bone cancer.Jasper and Vivian spent a fortune to hire some heretical, unorthodox mystic from who knew where. Through him, they learned about a sinister method of swapping souls to extend one's life.Only then did they meticulously set up this scheme. They brought me back from the orphanage with ulterior motives. They manipulated me so tha

Chapter 7

Cedric suddenly appeared behind me. "What are you doing? Why are you sneaking around like you've done something fishy?"He looked at me suspiciously. Then, his gaze fell on the flower bushes, and his expression changed instantly."You touched Belle's roses!" he accused angrily.I fell to the ground in shock. "C-Cedric, when did you get here? You didn't make a sound. You scared me to death!"A flash of disgust flitted across his eyes, but he still reached out and helped me up."What's this pile of black stuff for?" he asked.I picked up the small shovel and continued mixing as I explained, "I dug up the soil around here and added lime powder and several other fertilizers. It can prevent pests and also help the roses that Isabelle loved bloom even better."His expression softened a little. "Sorry, Beth. I was just anxious for a moment. After all, Belle used to love sitting in the gazebo and looking at these flowers."I nodded calmly and quickly filled the soil back in. Fortunatel

Chapter 8

After seeing the "repairmen" off and coming back, I once again heard the cheerful laughter of children. I silently apologized to the kids who would have to take the blame for me.Vivian sat on the couch and shot me a displeased stare. She was still holding the doll protectively in her arms. She started questioning me. "The chandelier was perfectly fine. How did it break? Did you open all the floor-to-ceiling windows?"I lowered my head, and my voice sounded choked with guilt. "I'm sorry, Mom. I thought the room was a bit damp. I was worried the doll's bed might get moldy, so I opened everything to air it out. I was only out on the balcony for a short while… Who knew…"Vivian pulled a long face. "Baby won't get moldy. From now on, don't open them so wide. Just leave a small gap. What if the chandelier really fell? Have you thought about that? Do you know how dangerous that would be?"It would certainly be dangerous for her precious Baby."Okay. I won't open them that wide again."

Chapter 9

Over the next few days, I ate less and less. My complexion and lips gradually turned pale, and I lost two pounds. However, compared to how I had become nothing but skin and bones in my previous life, this was still much better.I slept for long periods of time, yet there were often dark circles under my eyes. I looked fatigued no matter how much I slept. Sometimes, I would even have gaps in my memory when chatting with them. This pleased my adoptive family, and the smiles on their faces widened. Their attentive concern for me gradually turned into perfunctory indifference. One day, I said weakly, "Mom, Dad, could you take me to the hospital for a checkup? I keep feeling unwell. It's like I have no strength left."They ignored me.My hand trembled slightly as I held my cup, like I was unnerved. "Please, Mom and Dad…"Cedric impatiently slammed his fork down. Only then did Jasper speak. "Haven't you always been fine?"Vivian took a sip of soup and said leisurely, "That's right,

Chapter 10

Now, it was Laura who came to light the aromatherapy oil for me.She asked, "Why do you have to light this every night? And why turn on so many lights? You've even got a doll to keep you company. You sure have many weird habits.""Ms. Short, you have no idea. This aromatherapy oil induces sleep. Once it's lit, you won't hear anything outside. You won't even notice if there's thunder or rain. Sometimes, I sleep so deeply I can't even wake up. It's really good for sleep," I replied."Is it really that good?" Laura asked skeptically."Of course! Mom had it custom-made at a high price," I said. Her eyes darted around slyly. "Say, how about you give me a couple? I feel like I haven't been sleeping well these past few days either. But don't tell Mrs. Cox. She's a bit stingy and won't let me touch the things in your room."It sounded like a question, but she had already taken two new bottles out of the cabinet.I frowned slightly, as if I felt troubled. "Of course, you can. I still hav
