Chapter 1: The Wrong Side of Midnight

Mia's POV"There is nothing wrong with what you are doing," Lila said, pacing back and forth across the small room like she was the one with a decision to make. "You just have to sleep with someone you do not know to save your mother. One night, Mia. That is all." She added.I sat on the edge of my bed, watching her pace, and said nothing because honestly, what was there to say? She made it sound so simple, like picking up an extra shift at the restaurant or selling an old textbook."He is a stranger," she continued, stopping to look at me. "You will probably never see him again after tonight. One night and it is done. Your mother's bill gets paid and you are free.""You make it sound easy," I finally said."Because it is." She shrugged, sitting beside me. "People do harder things every day just to survive. This is survival, Mia. Nothing more."I did not respond. I just looked at my hands in my lap and let the silence say what I couldn't.She was not wrong about the survival part. I

Chapter 2: The Stranger's Room

Mia's POVI turned around slowly, and my stomach dropped."Jade?" I said, my voice coming out lower than I intended because I could not believe what I was seeing. She is Jade Miller, from my Literature class, and she was standing right there in the middle of this place, dressed in something that left very little to the imagination, staring back at me with the same exact look of horror that I knew was on my face."Mia," she breathed, her eyes going wide, and for a second neither of us said anything, we just stood there."What are you..." I started."Don't," she cut me off, shaking her head quickly and glancing around like she was checking if anyone was listening. "Don't ask me that because I am not going to explain myself and honestly, you should not have to either." She stepped closer and lowered her voice. "Everybody here has a reason. Nobody asks questions. That is the first rule." She addsedI swallowed. "You come here often?""Often enough," she said simply, and something in he

Chapter 3: The Morning After

Mia's POVHe looked at me for a moment after I said it, his expression completely unreadable, and then he just leaned back slightly and let out a slow breath through his nose."Okay," he said simply, and started to pull back.Something about how unbothered he was hit me harder than it should have. He was not angry, not pushing, not even disappointed. I do not know why that bothered me but it did because I had not come all this way, snuck out of my dorm, climbed a fence in heels, and sat in this room just to go back empty handed. My mother's face flashed in my mind. The hospital bed and te number on the bill.I ...I reached out and grabbed his arm before I could talk myself out of it and he stopped, looked down at my hand, then back at my face with one brow slightly raised.I did not wait for him to say anything. I leaned up and kissed him first. He was still for half a second and then he kissed me back, his hand coming up to grip my jaw, tilting my head exactly where he wanted it.Hi

Chapter 4: Right On My Throat

Mia's POV I dropped down behind Lila so fast I nearly knocked her off her seat."What is wrong with you?" she whispered, grabbing my arm.I pressed my hand over my mouth and said nothing because there were no words in the English language for what was currently happening to me.I told Lila everything on the walk home and she was so quiet for so long afterward that it scared me a little."Say something," I said."I am processing," she said, and then, "Mia. Your professor.""I know.""The man you slept with last night is your professor." She said"Lila, I know."She shook her head slowly. "Okay. Okay, does he know it is you? Like does he know your name?""I don't think so," I said, "and as long as nobody says anything, it stays that way."Which reminded me of something I had been trying not to think about all morning, Derek, my boyfriend. I had not called him last night, had not even thought about him until right now and that alone told me something about the state of us lately.I t

Chapter 5: Unforseen Circumstances

Mia's POVI was still running when I hit the street outside the university building, and I flagged down the first cab I saw and threw myself into the back seat and gave the driver the hospital address and sat there with my hands pressed flat on my thighs trying to breathe like a normal person. The doctor's words kept replaying in my head. "Condition has changed. Additional funding before we can proceed."More money. They needed more money and I had just paid everything I had and there was nothing left and I did not know what I was going to do when I got there and they told me a number I could not cover. My phone was in my hand and I was scrolling without thinking and then I stopped. The link.Damien's message from three days ago was still sitting there, the link and that one line underneath: "The offer stands. Whenever you are ready."I stared at it for a long time while the city moved past the cab window and then I thought about my mother's face and I clicked it.It opened into a pri

Chapter 6: Unknown Offer

Mia's POVI stepped into the private facility the nurses had described to me and the room looked nothing like the hospital ward I was used to. It felt more like a nice apartment with soft lights and fresh flowers on the side table. My mom was trying to sit up in bed when I walked in so I rushed over fast and held her shoulders gently."Don't get up Mom please" I said as I helped her settle back against the pillows. I took her hand and squeezed it."You're going to be fine okay. Just rest now." I added almost immediately. She looked at me with those tired but warm eyes and smiled a little. I really missed her huge laugh and her always nagging me. The sickness had really taken a lot from her."That gentleman who came earlier Mia he was very nice. He arranged everything and moved me here. How do you know him at all?" She said and I could see how her face beamed with a huge smile, I could tell she was more comfortable with this new space.I swallowed and kept my voice steady. "He's my ne

Chapter 7: His Annoying Offer

Mia's POV"It's something you can do" Damien added as he leaned back against his desk watching me with those calm gray eyes.I stopped with my hand already on the door handle and turned around slowly. My heart was still racing from everything that just happened. "What offer?" I asked because I didn't trust anything coming from him right now.He didn't move closer and now he was so close to me that I could feel his breathe on me, but his voice stayed even. "I want to hire you at the club you came to that first night. The same one."I stared at him feeling the anger rise again fast. "What the hell?" I said my voice getting louder. "What kind of girl do you think I am exactly?" I felt my cheeks burn because the words sounded ridiculous even to me after what he saw me do that night. "You think I'm some kind of slut you can just hire? I'm not that type of person Damien."He stayed completely calm like my shouting didn't affect him at all. He crossed his arms and looked at me for a secon

Chapter 8: My Now Damned Life

Mia's POVIt took about a few seconds before Lila grabbed my phone before I knew what was happening.I had completely lose guard staring at the contract and she was just staring at the screen with her mouth hanging open."Lila give it back," I said as I lunged for the phone but she twisted away from me and kept reading, her eyes moving fast across the screen."He actually sent it," she said, turning the phone toward me so I could see the contract in the message like I hadn't seen it a thousand times and over.I snatched it from her hand and sat down slow because my legs had gone weird under me."You have to sign this," Lila said, sitting beside me and grabbing my arm hard enough that I flinched."Mia listen to me, you're twenty two, you're not a kid anymore, you need this money and you know you need it, so stop looking at it like it's going to bite you.""It feels like it's going to bite me," I said and she rolled her eyes at that."Everything feels scary until you do it," she said, "t
