Chapter Twenty One

HaileyI got down four flights of stairs on a tremor and a locked jaw, and I do not remember any of it.Lucien had my good arm. Axel went ahead of us with two guards, and the healer came behind with her bag banging against her hip, cursing the stairs, cursing the pack, cursing me specifically for being out of bed.The cells under the east wing were older than the pack house above them. Stone laid by hands that had been dust for two hundred years; damp coming through the mortar; torches in iron brackets set too far apart so that you walked from light into dark into light again.I had been down here once, on the morning they took my father. I had got eleven steps before two warriors turned me around by the shoulders, and I had spent four years afterwards imagining the rest of it.Now I was going to see it, and it had nothing to do with him at all.Garrick, the warden, lay across the threshold of the guard room with his cheek in a puddle of spilled tea."Breathing," the healer said, knee

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO: THE ACCIDENT

Hailey: Lena came down the last four steps into the torchlight with her hands empty and held slightly away from her body, which is what you do when you know exactly how many armed men are looking at you. Two bands of gold at each cuff. Axel moved between her and me. "You will stop where you are." "I have stopped." Lena's eyes went past his shoulder and found mine. "Ask me. Don't let anyone ask it for you." "Did you arm Maddison for the opening event? Were you the one in charge of the weapon she used?" "Yes." There was no hesitation at all. "Which is why I came down here myself instead of sending a man, and why I will surrender my sword to Alpha Axel before I leave this cellar, and why I have already put my own people under watch by their own sergeants." She unbuckled the sword from her back one-handed and held it out flat. "Take it. Please take it now, because in about four minutes the Head Warrior of this pack is going to come through that door looking for someone to kill, and I

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: THE SLEEPING DOG

Hailey: The healer gave me something bitter to drink, and I poured half of it into the wash basin while her back was turned because I had four hours until first light, and I intended to be conscious for all of them. At the fourth bell, I dressed with one hand and Amanda's help. "You should be in bed," she said for the ninth time, kneeling to lace my boots. She tied off the second boot and sat back on her heels, looking up at me. I looked at her for a moment. "Thank you, Amanda." I had made an arrangement with the Alphas after noticing Corvain's demeanor. Maybe he was actually behind everything. They waited for me on the terrace steps in the grey before dawn, and none of them had slept. Axel had two shovels over his shoulder. Killian carried a lantern, a folded sheet of canvas, and the flat wooden case he used for evidence, while Royce carried nothing at all. He had the look of a man who had spent the night arguing and losing. "This is madness," Royce said. "If Corvain hears of

Chapter Twenty-Four: A Complicated Heart

Hailey:It was an awkward moment, especially for me. I hated the fact that Lucien had caught me with these two wicked beasts who had somehow managed to steal my heart. I hated how soft Axel's lips had tasted. I hated that I had been this vulnerable and close to a man who had once stood publicly to humiliate me and say those hurtful words that day.I remembered the coldness in his eyes. I knew I was supposed to let go, but I couldn't do that. I knew so many waters had passed under the bridge, and the series of events concerning my father, his vindication, and the ceremony that was about to fully come to life still lingered on.But here I was, feeling stupidly horny for Axel.I hated that the affection and intimacy I desperately craved couldn't be satisfied by Lucien because of his lingering affection for Lena, even though he had refused to admit it.Or was I just overthinking things? Was Lena a thing of the past, and was I entertaining these Alphas and ruining something beautiful just

Chapter Twenty-Five: The Pull: Before contest begins Proper

Hailey: His eyes had various meanings, like that of a wounded soldier and a captor of war. The demeanour of a vibrant dictator, and I was his subject. A small smirk appeared on his cheek, exposing his beautiful set of teeth. I quickly looked away as I turned my attention to the man by my side, Lucien. I ignored the judgemental gazes of the people around me. I refused to allow anyone to see the uncertainty beneath my confidence. I had survived the poison, survived the humiliation, and I was still standing. As I came fully into view of the arena, someone saw me. I didn't know who it was at first, but I saw the reaction. A genuine look of shock was plastered across the person's face. The shock did not disappear. He was probably very surprised that I was walking towards the field with both my hands swinging beside me. Corvain wore a look of disbelief, but it was so brief before I passed him and headed past the banquet hall. Then Amanda moved towards us from the side. She bent slig

Chapter Twenty-Six: The Arena comes alive.

Hailey: "What's wrong, Hailey? Are you alright?" I could sense the concern in his voice. "I'm fine," I whispered, giving Lucien a fake smile. I didn't know if it was the Moon Goddess playing tricks on us, but the feeling was real and hard to shake off. Then the sounds of heavy drums pounded sharply, tearing through the entire arena. When the trumpets blew, people rose, and Fenrir stepped into the arena. While the Triplet Alphas were watched without fear, he sat in silence. No one dared to speak too loud. A single whisper felt like it could set the Lycan off, and some were even scared to breathe. Was he truly that terrifying? No one had an answer. When he stepped up to the high table, he settled above us, gave me the faintest wink, and then sat. The whole room breathed out. His aura filled the space. Grand, heavy, and impossible to ignore. Corvain came in next, and this time, people actually whispered. Rumors spread fast. No one met his gaze. No one wanted to be the example he u

Chapter Twenty-Seven: Alexander's Fight

Hailey: My heart literally leapt from my chest when I saw the two monsters heading against Alexander. Would he be able to comfortably go against those two in hand-to-hand combat? Would his wolf be able to withstand the heat? Would he emerge victorious, or would he fall to the dust like the others that faced the two monstrous Beta wolves? They called themselves the Fiends, and rightly so, their name depicted evil. While others incapacitated their opponents or looked for ways of eliminating opponents naturally, these guys were killing for fun. Someone needed to put them in their place. I couldn't stand watching Alexander die horribly for this stupid game. I turned my attention towards the Lycan's guard. Perhaps I could distract myself with that fight. Damon looked fired up; he had been dropping bodies for fun till there was no one left, only the half-shifted warden of Hallow Hades. "Finally, I have a decent challenge," he muttered as he rushed towards the warden. His wolf was big

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Alexander! Dead or Alive?

Hailey: When Alexander fell to the ground, fragments of my heart left me. The other monster, though injured, had recovered enough to join in the fight. One attacked from the front while the other came from behind. Alexander blocked one strike, only to receive another across his back. He stumbled forward. The second Fiend kicked him in the stomach, and Alexander flew backward, landed hard and rolled across the arena. “Alexander!” My heart jumped into my throat. He immediately pushed himself up, blood trickling from his mouth. The two Fiends slowly approached him. They weren't even breathing heavily. “You're still standing?” One of them tilted its head. Alexander wiped the blood from his lips. “I was beginning to wonder if you two could actually kill me.” The Fiends growled, then both attacked at the same time. Alexander's expression changed. He knew he couldn't outrun both of them anymore, so he stopped running. He shifted from a full werewolf to a half-shifted beast to stand

Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Assassin’s Arrow

Hailey:I recklessly ran to the medical wing. I saw mages sharpening their blades, beasts with distorted faces raising their voices and arguing about the fight in the arena. Then I reached the gates of the infirmary, and one of the King's Guards stood before me.“Dignitaries and sides with personal interest are not allowed into the medical wing.” The guard blocked my way.I searched through my purse, looking for some change I could probably use to bribe the guard or buy his favour just enough for me to get into the room where Alexander was, then my hand touched the powder, the same powder Amanda had given to me.I felt both excited and frustrated at the same time. The specialist had given me just enough of the powder to get Alexander in shape, but I couldn't enter the medical wing, so I tried to use influence.“Don't you know who I am?” I queried, trying to raise my voice. “It's just two days to the main event of this Autumn Festival, and you are making things difficult for me? I'm su

Chapter Thirty: The Glowing Predator

Hailey:The arena came alive. The roars of the crowd were deafening. Beasts with contorted faces made bets on who would come out alive, and those that placed their hopes on the warden were already looking disappointed, their faces turned ashen. Before the warden could recover, Damon wrapped an arm around the warden's neck. The warden clawed at his arm, but Damon tightened the chokehold.“You want technique?” Damon lifted him again. “You should have brought more strength to this fight.”Damon slammed him down a second time. The warden's body bounced off the ground. As more blood splashed over the arena, Damon wasn't done yet. He dragged him up again and landed another slam. The crowd went insane with cheers. The warden looked frustrated, but he wasn't finished. He still had a little fight left in him.His fingers moved, and he struck Damon's ribs, making him grunt painfully. The warden struck again and again, hitting Damon in the ribs until his grip loosened. The warden twisted out of
