Aaron povThe leather wrap on the iron club felt wet against my palm, a wrong feeling for a November morning.Across the short grass of the estate course, Rowan took his swing. The hollow pop of wood hitting the ball rolled out toward the perimeter wall. Clean shot. Straight down the fairway.I didn’t watch where it went.My hand was buried in my jacket pocket, my thumb sliding fast against the screen of my phone. The first message from my father had come in twenty minutes ago, right when Rowan and I were loading the bags into the back of the transport cart. From: Silas Mercer Subject: Logistics Update Arriving in Stormveil by Friday evening. Have the western gate clearance forms ready for my signature. We need to finalize the quarterly accounts before the winter council meeting. My fingers shook against the casing when I typed the reply. To: Silas Mercer Subject: RE: Logistics Update Do not come here. Romy pov The brass screw was too small for the tip of the pocketknife I was using. It fell into the groove of the floorboards, rolled, and stopped against the base of the flour bin. I dropped to my knees and reached into the narrow gap between the lower shelf and the wall. The pantry smelled of dried cloves, chicory roots, and the salt pork that was stored in the crocks by the door. The single bulb hanging from the ceiling wire was yellow, coated in flour dust.A heavy boot blocked the light from the doorway. Rowan. He stood there, his leather coat brushing the hanging herb bundles, his shadow covering my hands before I could get my thumb around the screw.“Aaron said you were down here three hours ago,” Rowan said, “he is trying to reset the fence logs by the creek but he can’t find the ledger keys because you had the scullery door locked from the inside.”I kept my eyes on his leather laces, not looking up. “The keys are hanging on the hook behind the iron stove. If Aaron can’t fi

Chapter 95Romy PovMy palm flattened against his chest, directly over the hard, rapid beat of his heart. The contact sent a tremor through the bond, so sudden that my breath caught. His hand remained at my waist, his fingers spread against my coat as though he had forgotten why he had reached for me. Neither of us moved.Rowan’s gaze dropped to my mouth and I stepped back, but the saddle blankets stacked behind me left little room. “You can let go now.” I called, even though I wanted nothing more than for him to hold me tighter. His hand fell from my waist, although he did not move away. The doorway behind him admitted a narrow strip of grey light, outlining the breadth of his shoulders and leaving the rest of the room in shadow.“You are still trying to leave,” he said. There was less accusation in his voice now. The quietness of it made the words more dangerous. “Would you blame me?”“Yes. Yes, Raven, I will.”The answer caused a laugh to escape from me, but it faded when he cont

Rowan pov The ballpoint pen skipped across the bottom of the lumber manifest, leaving two dry grooves in the carbonless paper before the ink caught again.I pressed harder and finished the figure beside the lower clearing allocation. The desk shifted beneath my forearms, one of its metal legs sinking farther into the warped floor of the logging trailer. “Sign the third copy,” I told the foreman, turning the clipboard toward him. “I want the five-ton trucks at the lower clearing before the ground freezes.”The foreman glanced at the paperwork. Pine resin darkened the split running through his thumbnail, and wet sawdust clung to the cuffs of his jacket.“The creek road is already icing over,” he said. “If the temperature drops again, we might have to leave the secondary haul until morning.”The words had barely left his mouth when the back of my neck tightened. Heat drove through the centre of my chest. It came so sharply that my hand slipped from the manifest. The pen rolled across t

Rowan povGrey morning light filled the main hall, flattening the colours of the old portraits along the walls. The house appeared calm, but Romy’s scent had reached the lower floor again. It drifted from the main staircase, warm enough to set my wolf pacing beneath my skin.I rested one hand on the carved banister, footsteps sounded from the upper gallery.Jessiah descended carrying a bundle of security wire beneath one arm. A digital tester protruded from his shirt pocket, its indicator light blinking green.“The western line is clear,” he reported. “One of the contacts near the lower paddock had frozen, but it is holding now.”“The secondary gate needs a new battery before evening.”“I’ll take care of it.”“Check the northern cameras while you are out there. No unmated patrol guards inside the main house until I say otherwise.”Jessiah’s gaze lifte
