Chapter 1

Jasmine was horrified. "What was that, Aya?!""What was what?" I retorted calmly. "The cover wasn't shut tightly for some reason. We can't leave even the slightest crack open, Jazzy. Flies could get into Grandpa."Jasmine was tongue-tied. She stared at the coffin in a panic and tried another approach. "Look, Mom needs you to check our procedure again. The priest seems to have found some problems or something. Can you please go and see what that's about?"I crossed my arms. "I distinctly remember having checked the procedure three times with the priest yesterday.""No, no! That's not enough!" she snapped impatiently. "God, can you please possess a little self-awareness for once? You're supposed to be helping your husband's family, damn it!"She was right about one thing. I had helped them since their grandfather died three days ago. I had less than ten hours of sleep in all three days. The Whitakers had put all of their effort inviting the city's biggest elites to the grand funeral

Chapter 2

I took a stack of papers from my bag and handed it to her. "Would you like to look at it again?"Jasmine ignored the papers, her irritation mounting. She had not expected me to push back."That was yesterday! Things have changed since then, okay? So can you stop being a smartass and do what you're supposed to do already?"I nodded. "Alright. You've got a point."Her eyes softened, a trace of smugness settling in.I took out my phone and called the priest."Hello? Mrs. Whitaker?" the man answered."Good day, Father Matthew. Sorry to bother you," I said politely. "My mother-in-law mentioned there were changes to be made for Mr. Shawn Whitaker, my grandfather-in-law. She said you wanted them amended and hoped to discuss them with me. Is that correct?"Silence ensued.Jasmine's face flushed bright pink."Uh, I don't believe there's anything significant pending amendment, ma'am. There's no need to trouble yourself," he replied at last. That was a roundabout way of asking what I w

Chapter 3

Kim grabbed my shoulder and yelled, "This won't do! You can't be unpresentable at your grandfather-in-law's funeral! Change into new clothes right now!"She tried to drag me toward the door. The live chat cheered.[She's the GOAT!!! Getting changed will take at least five minutes!][They just need one minute, bro. Just a small crack in the coffin so they can breathe!][Get out of there already, you annoying side character. My best girl needs fresh air!][Poor Stephie's already crying. She wanted to get out so badly, but Vincent isn't letting her. He's holding her hands down!]Jasmine seized the opportunity. She grabbed my other arm and said, "I'll go with you, Aya!"They tried to haul me out of the hall.A sound came from the coffin.Kim went pale."Let's not dawdle, Aya!" she said loudly, trying to cover the noise. Her eyes twitched as she shot several glances at the coffin. She was counting down the seconds until we were gone.I did not resist. I let them drag me toward t

Chapter 4

A long beat of silence followed before whispers rippled through the crowd.Dulce's glare hardened. She stepped forward and struck my cheek. The force snapped my head to the side. The taste of metal filled my mouth. The live chat erupted.[That was good! Deserved!][She should have gotten her ego checked way sooner than this!][Who the hell did she think she was?]A sharp gasp swept through the crowd as Dulce shrieked, "I've had it with you, Aya! You've been a thorn in my side for years! It's been five goddamn years, and you've never shown a single positive pregnancy test!"Our illustrious family will end with Vincent's generation because you can't even conceive a child! What's the point of a wife?! So stop pretending to care about your elders. It's sickening! Do you think your grandfather-in-law is weeping in joy over your half-baked performance?"I touched the cut on my lip with my tongue and smiled. "On that topic, do you know what the doctor said when I went in for that fer

Chapter 5

First came Stephanie's piercing shriek. "Ah! Stop looking! Don't look!"Vincent flew into a rage. "Put the cover back on, Mom. Now!"By then, the visitors had seen everything. They saw him climb off her in a compromising position. Sweat gleamed on his skin, and faint marks of passion showed across his body. His pants hung around his ankles. The inner wall of the coffin was scored with scratch marks of varying depth. Torn clothing lay scattered inside the casket. They grabbed the shreds and tried to cover themselves, but the effort was futile. An open casket offered nowhere to hide from prying eyes. They could only curl into a seated fetal position and press their faces into their knees, a posture that looked both suggestive and pathetic.Dulce, Kim, and Jasmine stood frozen in shock.I gestured toward the crowd and raised my voice. "Now tell me, who deserves to kneel and beg for Grandpa's forgiveness?"One of the aunts covered her mouth and made the Sign of the Cross. "Have merc

The live chat buzzed with glee.[Oh, we're at the best part now!][Wait, they already believe them? Why are fictional people always so dumb?][Damn, Stephanie's a natural. She can cry at the drop of a hat, whenever she wants!]Dulce sensed that some people were starting to take her side. She turned to the most important guests and elders in the room and said, "I suspect this was a scheme set up by someone from outside, working with one of our own. Our family has grown too strong, and this is exactly what they're after. They even tried to use my father-in-law after his passing!"I slipped quietly through the crowd, reached into the coffin where the two of them still lay entangled, and pulled a white phone studded with rhinestones from their grandfather's pocket.Stephanie knew what I was about to do. Her face turned ashen, and her lips began to tremble.I raised the phone and showed it to the guests before turning to Dulce, who stared in shock. "Oh, a scheme? Someone drugged them

Chapter 7

[Pregnant?! She's pregnant already?!][This came out of nowhere. It's frying my brain!]Dulce sensed an opening and seized it again, her trademark shrill voice cutting through the room. "That's right, you useless wench! What's wrong with my son taking a mistress who can at least give him the child he has always deserved?"And you dare scream that it's definitely my son and blame some… sperm condition just to avoid responsibility yourself?"Look at Stephanie. She's carrying our precious grandson right now! If you have any shred of dignity left, you should know it's time to get the hell out of the way!"I laughed and turned to Vincent. "Do you really think only women can be infertile? You still haven't read the report sitting at the bottom of your drawer, have you?""What report?!" he snapped.Stephanie froze mid-motion, her hand still resting on her belly.I stepped forward and addressed the guests."It's the health report that concluded you suffer from necrospermia," I announc

Chapter 8

It stunned everyone into silence.Reid closed his eyes, drew a steady breath, and said, "Call an ambulance. Whatever respectability we once had is gone, but if this child is one of ours, the least we can do is make sure they do not die in a place like this."[Oh shit, oh shitm oh shit oh shit! She's bleeding!][I don't think the baby's going to survive this!]Stephanie was rushed to the hospital.Several of the oldest and most respected elders approached my grandfather-in-law's casket, tears streaking their cheeks. "What has become of us? What has become of all of us? How did a funeral come to this? Oh God…"Reid straightened, his voice hoarse but firm. "We proceed with the funeral. My father will rest in peace. I will see to it."The guests, however, had no desire to stay. They had not expected to witness a spectacle that veered between scandal and farce, and now they wanted to leave as quickly as possible."Sorry for your loss, Mr. Whitaker, but something came up at my compan

Chapter 9

"T-That's impossible! You're lying!" Vincent stammered as he stumbled back. "Those documents were flawless. No one should have suspected a thing. How could that lawyer—""He was never loyal to you," I interjected. "Mr. Wright was my mother's best friend and my godfather. Do you understand now? Dad never trusted you. Not once."Vincent collapsed to the floor, his face blank. His mother stood frozen, her mouth agape.[Who saw this twist coming?!][She planned everything from the start! Vincent was playing checkers while her dad was playing chess!]I turned away and approached my grandfather-in-law's body. I placed a flower in his casket, then left. From that moment on, the Whitaker family no longer concerned me.…The scandal at the funeral became the tipping point of their downfall. Soon after, the entire family declared bankruptcy.Vincent had expanded the company recklessly over the years. At the same time, his own relatives had been siphoning off company assets. By then, not
