The final spell

~KNOX ~I waited until the entire west wing went completely silent.Miller was asleep on his bed in the adjoining room, breathing heavily. I looked at his peaceful, sleeping face for a long moment, then quietly pulled my leather coat around my shoulders. I was intentionally leaving him out of this. Miller was a loyal friend, but he was far too terrified of dark magic. If I told him what I was planning to do tonight, he would throw himself at my feet and beg me to stop.I couldn't stop. Not now.I slipped out through the narrow alcove window, dropping silently onto the wet grass of the lower courtyard. The night air was freezing, biting through my tunic, but my body was already burning with a feverish, restless energy. My right wrist throbbed with the dull weight of the iron tracking charm, while the raw, burned scar on my left wrist stinged violently."I knew you were going to do something completely insane," a low voice whispered from the shadows of the stone archway.I whipped a

No turning back

~KNOX~"Do it, Maeve," I said, my voice steady, cold, and final."Knox, please!" Jax begged, with tears of pure frustration shining in his dark eyes. "Don't do this! Your wolf can get hurt, please!""I don't care about my wolf, Jax!" I yelled, turning to my friend with burning determination. "I don't care if it takes my strength! I even don't care if it takes my life later! If I have to walk through hell to hold Everett in my arms one last time, and if I can guarantee his safety, then I will gladly burn!"Jax stared at me in despair, his chest heaving, completely speechless. He slowly let go of my arm, before stepping back against the stone wall, and burying his face in his hands.Maeve looked at me with deep pity and awe, then she slowly nodded her head. "Prepare the circle."We moved to the center of the old botanical glasshouse.Maeve drew a massive, complex runic circle on the stone floor using crushed black salt, silver powder, and rare herbs. She lit four tall black candles at

A Friend from the past

~KNOX~"KNOX!" Jax screamed, his voice echoing frantically into the howling storm as he dived across the circle toward my motionless body. "KNOX! WAKE UP! GODDESS PLEASE, KNOX!"After going through what I could only describe as hell, I opened my eyes, gasping desperately for air as my chest heaved against the cold stone floor. Blood tasted thick and sour in my throat."Knox! Hold on!" Jax was kneeling beside me, his hands shaking as he boosted me up against a broken pillar. My whole body trembled violently. Pain shot through my spine like electric shocks, but when I looked down at my right wrist, the black iron tracking charm was completely dead. The dark metal was dull and cracked, its glowing magical runes burned away."It worked..." I wheezed out, coughing into my sleeve.Maeve collapsed onto her knees nearby, looking completely drained. "The cloak is active around you, Knox. But you look like death.""We don't have time," I grunted, forcing myself to stand up. My legs felt like

In his arm

~KNOX~"Just stay alive, Knox," Lewis said, and the line went dead.I sighed as all the old painful memories flooded back into my mind. I could still remember the terrifying night my uncle discovered Lewis and me together. I remembered the cold blood on the floor, the smell of burning iron, and the broken, bloody sight of Lewis lying motionless in that hospital bed. The guilt pressed down on my chest like an iron weight. And I let out a long, heavy sigh, running a shaking hand over my face. I couldn't afford to get lost in the past. Lewis had survived, and he was offering us a lifeline tonight. I pushed the painful memories deep down into my heart, shook my head forcefully, and focused on the boy who needed me right now.I handed the comm-device back to Jax, but Jax was already pacing around the ruined glasshouse with a deeply stressed expression, wringing his hands together."Having Lewis at the perimeter is great, Knox, but I can't guard the entire stable grounds alone while yo

Leave for your safety

~KNOX~"You're here... you're really here," Everett sobbed softly against my neck. His hot tears soaked straight through the fabric of my shirt, burning against my skin. I could feel every shudder that ran through his delicate frame, every desperate gasp of air he pulled into his lungs. He was trembling so violently that for a second, I thought his legs were going to give out beneath him."I'm here, my sweet boy," I choked out, my voice breaking under the weight of an overwhelming emotion I couldn't control.I buried my face deep into his soft, messy hair, breathing in his sweet, familiar scent of wild cinnamon and gentle rain. It was a scent that had haunted my dreams every single night since they locked him away. My hands trembled as I pressed them firmly against the small of his back, holding him so tight against my chest that there wasn't a single inch of space between us. I held him as if he were the only fragile thing keeping me anchored to this brutal, decaying earth."I'm

Rejecting the magic

~KNOX~"Miller is hiding near the West Wing dorms, keeping watch on the upper floor!" Jax replied instantly through the static."Tell Miller to get ready!" I commanded, my jaw setting tight. "We are pulling Clara out right now! We have to extract her from Valerie's wing before the guards lock down the gates!""Are you crazy, Knox?!" Jax yelled softly through the speaker. "If Miller and I try to break into Valerie's wing...."Suddenly, a horrific, burning wave of agony exploded inside my chest!"AAAAAAARRRRGGGGHH!"The comm-device slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the wet stone. I doubled over violently, squeezing my chest as a sickening, burning feeling tore through my veins. It felt as if my blood had suddenly turned into boiling acid, tearing my inner organs to shreds."Knox!" Everett shrieked in horror. He dived forward, catching my shoulders as my knees slammed hard onto the wet stone floor."G-Gahh...!" I choked out, my body shaking uncontrollably. A thick spurt of d

I won't Leave

~KNOX~The executioner guard raised the silver dagger, stepping slowly toward Everett. But Everett struggled with everything he had. He kicked, he twisted, he pulled against the guard's iron grip until his wrists bled, but the armored guard didn't budge an inch. The heavy steel grip around his chest locked him tight.Realizing he couldn't break free, Everett stopped fighting. He slowly turned his head, his brown eyes finding mine across the damp gravel.I was lying in the mud, vomiting blood, crying out his name in broken, useless rasps. Everett looked at me, at my shattered eyes, at my trembling hands, and a quiet, horrifying understanding washed over his pale face. There was no rescue coming. Jax was gone. Miller was gone. I was basically paralyzed. The executioner lifted the glowing blade high into the cold air, positioning the point right over Everett's chest.Everett held my gaze through the rising tears, his trembling lips forming a final, silent whisper in the dark:I love yo

Something awaken

~KNOX~"I will strip him in front of the entire academy. I will break every single bone in his hands. I will cut his skin inch by inch while he screams your name, and I will force you to sit in chains and watch every single second of it before I slice his throat."With those words... Something deep inside my chest violently, brutally snapped. The dark magic Maeve had placed in my blood, the dark spell that was supposed to be rejecting my body, suddenly reacted to my blinding, terrifying fury.It didn't destroy my internal wolf. It mutated it.Deep inside my chest, a dark, monstrous power burst open like a sleeping demon waking up from hell. The faint red glow of my Alpha eyes transformed into a pitch-black void, pulsing wildly with unstable, dark purple lightning.BOOM!A terrifying shockwave of dark aura exploded outward from my body! The deep suppression iron cuffs around my wrists and neck shattered into hundreds of sharp metal fragments, spraying across the marble floor like shrap

I Forgive him

~EVERETT~I had spent hours staring at the tiny, crumpled slip of paper in my trembling hands.Knox had managed to slip it to me during the dinner, his fingers brushing against mine for less than a second, but that brief touch had sent a shockwave straight to my heart. Back in my small, suffocating room, I paced back and forth across the cold floorboards, reading those few scribbled words over and over until the ink blurred under my tears.'Behind the stables. Midnight. Come alone.'My mind was a chaotic storm of pure joy and overwhelming panic. I was gladden, so desperately happy that I might finally get to see Knox again after what felt like an eternity of pain and darkness. But beneath that joy, a cold, heavy dread gripped my stomach. How is he going to see me? I thought frantically, pressing the paper to my chest. There are guards posted at every corner. Valerie has eyes everywhere. What if they catch us? What if Lord Zeth finds out?I knew the repercussions. If we were caugh

A Nightmare

~EVERETT~But then, Knox pulled back, his eyes darkening with terrifying reality."With all that said, Everett..." Knox whispered, his hands gripping my arms tight. "You have to leave. Tonight."My heart stopped. The joy instantly vanished, replaced by sheer shock and horror. "What? Leave?! No! Knox, I won't go without you! I won't leave you here alone!""You have to!" Knox insisted desperately. "My spell is temporary! Once the morning comes, my uncle will kill you!""No! What about Clara?!" I sobbed, shaking my head wildly. "I can't leave my sister!"Before we could argue any further, the comm-device in Knox's pocket buzzed with agitated static. Jax's panicked voice cut through: "Guards are coming! Move NOW!"Knox tried to change the plan, yelling into the receiver that we needed to pull Clara out right now. But mid-sentence, Knox let out a blood-curdling scream of agony! He dropped to his knees in the dirt, clutching his chest as blood spurted from his mouth."Knox!" I shrieked, di
