KAZIMIR "According to you, she killed her, but from what you say, it seems like the investigations were never concluded. The Ironclaw pack seems to be as clueless on this situation as well as you.""Because she fled.""You don't have any evidence that she did this. Ariel blondeau was on the run for years, trying to survive. You really think she would have risked killing an alpha?""She is a blood moon bride with immense power. She can kill alphas with just one touch. Why do you talk about her as if she is some spineless weak damsel?"I didn't answer. The council deliberated in whispers. Then Elara spoke."We will conduct our own investigation. We will bring Ariel Blondeau before this council and demand answers.""No.""Excuse me?""You're not bringing her before this council. Not without proper evidence. Not without me taking a look at the investigation myself.""You're too close to her. You can't be objective." Elara paused. "We're placing your brother Nikolai in charge of the inves

ARIEL We sat in silence for a moment. The tea was warm in my hands. The kitchen was quiet. It was almost peaceful."The investigation is...," Nikolai said finally. "I think I may have a lead on a witness. They worked with Kane."I looked up. "Who?""I don't know who the person is yet, but I'm meeting with them today to talk to them. Hopefully it turns out well .""Will it be enough?""It might be. But Katherine will fight dirty. She feels slighted that Kazimir didn't pick her as his Luna so she's doing all of this with the hopes that you get rejected as his mate. Obviously, she has the council's support and backing and also the pack." "What else is new?"Nikolai almost smiled, almost. "We need to move fast. Get the witness's statement on record before Katherine figures out what I'm doing.""Then let's do it."-————————Kazimir joined us a while laterz He poured himself a cup of coffee, then sat beside me."Nikolai told you about the witness?""Yes.""We need to move quickly. Get to

ARIEL The next day, we had to fake pregnancy test results and scans. So Lev called in favors. They had to find a way to fabricate the test results from a real and reputable hospital so the council wouldn’t be suspicious. It had to be real enough so that when they were doing their own digging around, they wouldn’t be able to find the real truth. It had to be as real as an actual pregnancy. "We need something official," Lev said. "Something with a seal and a valid signature. Something the council can't disprove.""I have a good contact at the city hospital," Tessa said. "She owes me. She can create a fake document, a lab result with a positive pregnancy test. It'll look legitimate and it’s a legitimate hospital.""How long?""Two days. Maybe more.""Two days is enough. We can’t do more days.""I know. I'm working on it."---While they worked, I spent time with Evie. She was in my room, playing with her stuffed animals, making up stories about wolves and dragons and princesses who co

ARIEL Kazimir and Dimitri wouldn’t tell me what happened between the two of them. But from the scene I found in their room, I could see what had happened. Kazimir had found Scarlet in the room with Dimitri and he wasn’t happy about that. I wondered how he would react, his own brother sleeping with bi ex girlfriend. Well, now I has an answer to that question. He was definitely not happy about it. He wasn’t happy about any of it and part of me wondered if that was why Dimitri did it. He didn’t seem like the type to lash out to find attention from his brother, but maybe he did it to spite Kazimir in a way. I found Tessa in the lab that evening. I wanted to check on her before going back to my room. Just to make sure she was okay. She was sitting on a stool, staring at the wall, her hands folded in her lap. The pregnancy test was still on the counter, the one she'd used, the one that had saved us all. I closed the door behind me. "Tessa." She looked up at me, I could tell she

ARIEL I wanted to follow him. The moment Kazimir walked out the door, I was on my feet, reaching for my shoes, my keys and anything. I couldn't just sit here while the witness who was the only one who could get me out of this mess was fighting for her life. I couldn't just wait and worry and do nothing. But Kazimir's words echoed in my head. Stay here. Please. And Nikolai's voice on the phone, calm and steady. We've got this, Ariel. Don't worry. For once, I believed them. They could handle this all on their own. All I had to do was wait. I sank back onto the bed. Pressed my palms against my eyes and tried to breathe.I hated this. Hated feeling helpless. Hated waiting. But I stayed.---Lev and I met in the kitchen an hour later. I was staring at a cup of tea I hadn't touched, my mind a thousand miles away. He sat across from me, his expression careful."How are you? Where’s Evie. It’s time," he said. "Routine checkup. Nothing to worry about.""I'll come with you.""You don't have
