CHAPTER 42: Unspoken VowsBenicio rarely allowed himself the luxury of slowing down. But today he had decided to pay his sister a visit. His busy lifestyle often got in the way of them spending quality time together, but today, seated on the wrap-around porch of the rustic villa Cara had temporarily made her home, he felt something close to peace. A soft crisp breeze stirred the vineyard trees just beyond the railing, rustling the branches like a whispered lullaby. Birds called somewhere overhead. The world was quiet here, far from boardrooms and scandals, from heartbreaks masked behind carefully pressed suits and curt smiles. That had been his life for a while.Cara had dragged him away from the city with nothing more than a teasing text: Since you’ve suddenly remembered you have a sister, the least you can do is visit me before I give birth without your presence.Benicio knew his sister always had a flair for the dramatics. She was hardly showing, but she was already talking about

CHAPTER 44: Waiting for youSarah’s heels clicked softly against the marble floors of her home as she entered, her thoughts a tangled storm of confusion and unease. She had been feeling this way all day. She was thankful the children had not actually noticed it, as they were so engrossed with the games they played in the park with Mrs Langford. She could not be mistaken, that it was Edward's car that she saw earlier. And then, Mrs Langdon's words had confirmed it—her description of the man that had conversed with Liam and Robyn matching Edward's description. She had not probed the ignorant housekeeper further about her children's encounter with their unknown father at that point. She decided to wait until they got home.Robyn and Liam had already headed up to their room to freshen up and settle in, after having their meal that had been prepared by Mrs. Langford, totally oblivious to their mother’s anxiety. And Sarah couldn't eat. She could not sit still either. Not after what she’d

CHAPTER 46: You won't lose anything As soon as the words hit the air—Benicio’s gaze flicked back to the spot where Edward’s silhouette had vanished, with the storm flickering behind his eyes before he vanished.Sarah didn’t notice. Her mind had now reset back to the reason why she initially sought Benicio out before the whirlwind of his unprecedented confession momentarily swept it away. She was still spinning from the moment they’d just shared: the confession, the plea for some time: the suffocating weight of guilt she hadn’t expected to carry.Benicio turned back to her. “Tell me exactly what happened at the park.”Sarah looked up at him, the warmth of the candles flickering shadows across her face, doing very little to soften all the tension that clung to her. Her voice was quiet, careful as she recounted all that her housekeeper had told her. “I took the kids out to the park today, as you know. But while there—I got a call from the lawyer, so I asked Mrs Langford to watch them w

CHAPTER 48: Get your hands off meIt was always like fate was playing a cruel trick on a person after they had just taken a decision to stay away from something or someone, only to encounter a situation that warranted bringing them into the same orbit with the person. That was exactly the lot of Sarah after she had resolved to avoid Edward at all cost.Sarah clutched the slim manila folder tightly to her chest as she stepped into Edward’s office, the click of her heels against the polished floor echoing like the beat of a drum announcing a war she definitely had no intention of fighting. The room was bathed in the late afternoon light that filtered in from the drawn blinds that were draped over the large window, golden rays slipping through the tall glass windows behind his desk, making long shadows appear across the sleek furniture. Edward looked up from a document, his eyes narrowing subtly as she walked in. He was surprised to see her walk into his office after she had made a cons

CHAPTER 50: Something warm in his heartEdward hadn’t planned to linger. He had never visited one of the schools that had been founded by him. They always sent him invitations every year during their annual open day event, but he never made time to attend. But this year, he managed to make time. His visit to the school was supposed to be a quiet, swift affair. Handshakes with the administration, a few photographs for the school's magazine, a short speech, and then he would vanish like smoke. Without fail, Edward had always donated to the school during this time every year, even when he never attended, every year since the school opened its doors. The tycoon funded scholarships, supplies, and facility renovations, even though he never showed up, but he had decided to be there in person this time.He had just finished his business with the school administration and was on his way out. As soon as he stepped onto the school’s open courtyard, he heard a laugh that made his chest tighten
