Semua Bab burn between us: Bab 61 - Bab 70

Winter on the Alentejo coast arrived the way things arrive when they've been doing so for a very long time — without announcement, simply present one morning in a way it hadn't been the morning before. The Atlantic changed first. The same water, the same distance, but the quality of it shifted — something colder in its sound, something more serious in the way the swells came in. The umbrella pines behind the house took on the specific authority of trees that know weather is coming and have arranged themselves accordingly over decades of doing so. The light that had been warm and slanted became something more considered, arriving later and leaving earlier, as though the day had reduced its ambitions.Dante found he loved it.This surprised him. He had not expected to have a preference about seasons — that had seemed like the kind of thing that belonged to people with lives rather than positions, people who accumulated enough years in one place to develop opinions about what the place d

Six weeks was enough time.Annika arrived in the Alentejo on the third week of January — she drove from Lisbon in a rental car that was smaller than her briefcase, which was the kind of vehicular decision that told you something — and sat at the kitchen table for two days and built the testimony framework with the systematic precision of someone who understood that a man's account of fourteen years inside a criminal organization needed to be organized, calibrated, and entirely defensible. She also, during those two days, ate two of Dante's dinners without comment and then, on the second evening, said: "The fish last night. The recipe.""Dona Beatriz," Dante said. "A shop owner in the Azores. She demonstrated it with hand gestures.""The hand gesture methodology works," Annika said. "The result was very good.""I'll convey that," Dante said. She worked with Dante on the chronological framework during the days and in the evenings she sat in the main room with documents, which was her ve

The Brussels Federal Court was larger than the Italian chamber and smaller than its own importance. It had the quality of rooms where consequential things had been happening for long enough that the room itself had absorbed some of the specific gravity — the ceiling a particular height, the wood panelling a particular dark, the acoustics arranged so that words landed with the weight they deserved. The press gallery was full. The international observer section was full. The public gallery, which had required application for seats two months in advance, was full.Dante sat in the preparation room with Annika at 8:47 AM and went through the final checklist with the same precision as every other Annika checklist, which was complete and correct and required thirty-two minutes. At 9:19 he walked into the court. He had been in many rooms with Viktor Solen. Briefing rooms, operational debriefs, the specific confined geography of a career spent inside an organization they had both occupied. He

The morning after Brussels was a Saturday, which meant nothing operationally but meant something domestically — the day with no schedule, no calls expected, no preparation required.Dante made breakfast. Not the minimal provisions of a transit meal — actual breakfast, the kind the kitchen in the Alentejo house was designed for: eggs from Senhor Cardoso two farms over who kept chickens with the personal investment of someone who considered them collaborators rather than livestock, the bread from the bakery in the village that opened at 7 AM and produced something with a crust that required a specific technique, olive oil that was from the property itself — the previous owners had left three bottles and they'd used them slowly, treating them with the respect of something that would eventually run out.Elian came downstairs at 8:30 in the state of someone who had slept the full sleep and was arriving in the morning with the clean openness of a person who has no debt outstanding to the pr

Viktor Solen was found guilty on fourteen counts. The verdict came on a Friday morning in April — spring now, the Alentejo asserting itself with the specific enthusiasm of a landscape that had been patient through winter and was now releasing everything it had been holding. The garden was extraordinary. The fig tree had broken dormancy two weeks earlier and was producing leaves with the committed conviction Dona Beatriz had predicted.Dante read the verdict notification on his phone while standing in the orchard. He read it twice. Then he put the phone in his pocket and stood among the cork trees in the April morning and looked at the sky.Fourteen counts. Including the Minsk authorization. Including the legislative coercion. Including three counts related to operations he hadn't known the full scope of when he'd left — operations that the trial had revealed, that Selene's testimony and the archive materials and his own testimony had made visible and irrefutable.Fourteen counts, each
