บททั้งหมดของ All In: A Wife’s Comeback: บทที่ 1 - บทที่ 9

My husband Justin Lansing and I met when we were both bussing tables. Neither one of us was afraid of work. We moved to Cratertown and started a breakfast cart. Five years on, we had cleared thirty thousand dollars and bought a used car.Driving back to the village for the holidays felt like a homecoming victory lap.Until the morning Justin came in and dropped to his knees on the kitchen floor."Babe, I lost everything. I lost the car too."I had just gotten out of bed. The words bounced off me. It took me ten seconds to register what he had said."Wait... what?"He said it again. The blood drained from my face."Tell me you're joking."His phone buzzed. A voice memo from a contact saved as Uncle Buck:"Justin, the car only books at five thousand. You're still two thousand short. Come pay it off, or we're coming to the house."I yanked the phone out of his hand. The chat history with Uncle Buck stared back at me. The room tilted."Babe, I screwed up. I don't know what came

I had Justin stand right behind my chair, half because I needed eyes on the room, half so the watchers had to pick a side of the table to crowd.A woman alone in there was meat.Buck did not say anything. He glanced at the man across from him, his fingers moving fast over the deck.My head was running. He dealt three to me. I tucked them in, lifted a corner. I had what I needed."First time playing with us, niece. Easy on the bets.""It's nothing. I can afford a little fun."I let myself look careless. He grinned. He laid down a pair.I opened mine. Predictably, I lost.Buck chuckled. "Mae, maybe ease into it.""Uncle Buck, you really don't think I can play?"I pulled a stack of bills out of my coat and put them on the table."I told you, I have money. I'm just here for fun."Buck sat up. "All right, then. We play for real."I made my face look greedy. The room around us went serious at the same time.So the gossip had been right. Everyone around me was on his side.No

I turned both hands over. The fresh manicure caught the light. Buck snorted."All right, you're not as simple as you look. Send Justin back to the table.""That's not how it works. You lose a hand, and now you want a substitute? Uncle, can't you handle losing?"I let my eyes go cold."Uncle. You're supposed to be the king of this room."I stuck my thumb up."You can't take a loss? So I get to win, and then you walk away?"Try that. See who comes back to your table next week."There were four tables in the shed. Mine was the loudest. The men at the other tables were already watching. They piled on."Buck, you can't beat a woman, so you want to switch her out?""You run this table, but now you can't handle a woman? That's pathetic.""I lost here last month. You wouldn't let me leave. You even called my family to pay. Now you want out?"Buck's face went red.I pressed the advantage."Uncle, if you don't want to play with me, fine."Honey, we're leaving."I stood up. He imm

A few women near the corner had been watching the whole thing. They were going to have a story to take home.I did not care. I was not trying to be liked. The holidays would end, and we would go back to the city. They could say whatever they wanted.I closed our gate and dragged Justin and our daughter inside. The trunk was full of presents. When my in-laws saw what I had bought, and heard about the thirty thousand from the night before, my mother-in-law grabbed a broom and swung it at Justin's head. He did not dodge. I did not stop her. When she was done, I said, "It's all right. I won it back. But Buck… Buck is dead to us. Family or not, the man set up his own nephew."Justin works outside. He's up at two in the morning every day. Before dawn, he's already out there working. Every dollar he earns is hard-earned money."At his age, he doesn't have many hobbies. Playing a little here and there, I don't mind. But something like this, cleaning someone out overnight, I've never seen

I did not say a word. I drove off, followed the local police's social media account, and forwarded them the video.About a week later, my mother-in-law called."Buck got picked up at the mahjong parlor in town. Organized gambling. Big amounts. Ten years."I let out a breath.Ten years was enough. I hoped he had learned his lesson and come out a better man.It was not just him I was thinking about. So many young men work hard all year, only to come home and get trapped in losing everything. Playing a few casual rounds for fun is one thing, but ruining someone's livelihood is something else entirely. After I hung up, I saw customers outside and quickly waved them in.Justin and I kept grinding for a living. We were busy every day. It was exhausting, but knowing there was a future ahead gave us the motivation to keep going. After that, I would occasionally hear updates from home through my mother-in-law.After Buck was arrested, the young men in the village finally learned their
