Chapter 1

I froze on the spot, my blood instantly turning cold.A wave of nausea washed over me, and my vision went black for a moment.Charles Scott caught me just in time, then gently wiped the tears from my face. "You're going to be a mother soon. Why are you still so reckless?"Overwhelmed by resentment, I stared intently at him. "Why… Why does it have to be today?"Stunned, Charles looked past me and glanced at Samantha Wood, his voice soft. "I never wanted to tell you the truth."But she's been taking photos for us from the side. She always forces a smile, so I suddenly feel bad."After a momentary pause, he continued, "I've wronged her terribly. As for you, I've made it up to you by giving you a child."My sanity finally shattered. "What… What do you mean that you've made it up to me?"Charles revealed nonchalantly, "You had a miscarriage last time because we accidentally spilled some lubricant on the stairs."That revelation struck me like a bolt from the blue. I thought I had

Chapter 2

Charles couldn't be bothered with the blood on his forehead and said to Samantha, "And you? Have you ever thought about yourself?"The sight of them being all affectionate with each other only disgusted me.Just as I was about to leave, Ethan Gardner pushed the door open and blocked my way."Natalie, Sammy only wants a family. Don't hold it against her."I struggled to speak. "So, you know about this, too? Did you send me away on purpose during the mission last week?" Ethan let out a sigh. "Natalie, among the 100 people who were taken hostage during the abduction, only Sammy survived."She sees you as her sister. You've been taking care of her for so long. Isn't it because you haven't guided her properly that she made a mistake?"Don't make things hard for her. All her family members died during that accident back then. Life has been tough on her.""Life has been tough on her?" I wondered.Back then, I felt sorry that she had lost her family, so I took care of her like she wa

Chapter 3

At the graduation ceremony, Samantha wore a haute couture white dress and stood under the spotlight as a high-achieving graduate. The students behind me started gossiping. "Sammy is so pretty and bright. More than 100 people died in that abduction. She'll live on with them in her heart."Samantha flashed me a gentle smile. "Nat, I'm glad that you're here."Charles shot me a look, urging me to say it.Expressionless, I unfolded the "graduation farewell" note he had prepared earlier."I'm dealing with hormonal issues. I lost my temper yesterday and slapped Sammy. I'll find out who's behind the rumor that says she's a homewrecker."Sneering, I tore the note to pieces. Seeing the frown on his face, I took the microphone and said, "What makes you think I'll give that ungrateful woman a chance? Let me clarify something. The rumor is true. Samantha Wood is a homewrecker."The crowd erupted in an uproar.Samantha was stunned, then her eyes turned red instantly. "Nat, I'm indebted to y

Lying on the operating table, I felt the icy-cold instruments twisting inside me.I could feel the life within me gradually slipping away, but deep down, I was relieved. Maybe the baby was never meant for this nasty world.…The sun was setting when I dragged my weary body home.Charles glanced at my pale face and handed me a glass of warm water."I was just about to pick you up from the campus. Don't hold it against Sammy. She wouldn't have been terrified and said that if you hadn't humiliated her in public and provoked her."Stop being mad. You're going to be a mother soon. Why bother picking on a youngster?"I already asked Sammy to file for a divorce. Once the formalities are finalized, we'll register our marriage."My face remained blank as I turned to look at our wedding photo on the wall.I grabbed the glass and threw it at the photo. The glass shattered into pieces, and the shreds cut Charles' face in the photo. His face fell instantly. Just then, Samantha came

With a bang, I disappeared out the window, while my spirit hovered in mid-air.I saw Charles dash forward, with half of his body hanging out of the window."Nat!" His voice faded in the wind, and there was no response. Behind him, Samantha spoke softly. "Charles, calm down. That gunshot sounded off."Charles turned around at once, horror flickering in his gaze.It was an expression that I didn't quite recognize. He had always been so calm and reserved that he remained nonchalant even when he cheated on me. Samantha stepped forward and picked up the gun. She flipped it over and showed him the muzzle. "Look, this is a toy marble gun, not a real gun. Nat probably tried to scare us with this."Her voice was gentle. Ethan walked up to them and glanced at it. Everything seemed to click in his mind, and he nodded. "Sammy is right. I told you—someone as tough as Nat wouldn't take her own life."She probably didn't want to hand over her gun and was afraid of getting punished. Henc

Chapter 6

Charles squatted beside me, his fingers lingering near my face for a long moment.Someone behind him said, "Let's wait for the doctor."Ethan turned around and glared at that person, and the latter quickly held his tongue. His fingers finally settled on my face. It was cold and stiff. That was a face they would recognize at once."Nat!" Charles shoved Ethan away, his voice hoarse. "Open your eyes and look at me! I'm here. Look at me…"I didn't answer. My eyes were half-open, staring at the night sky above me. My face was streaked with tears, and I was smiling faintly.Charles slid his hand down my face and touched my hand, which hung loosely at my side.As he gripped my hand, something slipped out and rolled away.He lowered his head and saw a silver ring stained with blood. His breath hitched. He recognized the ring. Back then, he had bought the materials with his first paycheck from the training and crafted the ring himself. He had messed up a dozen rings before he suc

Chapter 7

Everyone surrounded Samantha the moment she shouted and collapsed.Charles wrapped his arms around me and refused to let go.I could feel his warmth through his blood-stained shirt, and it disgusted me.But I no longer had the strength to push him away.My consciousness seemed to drift in mid-air as I watched everything with cold indifference. The doctor came and lifted me onto the stretcher before covering my body with a white cloth. The moment the white cloth covered my eyes, I heard someone yell, "Samantha has been sent to the emergency room. She's having a PTSD episode."Charles hesitated. It took him only a few seconds to choose between Samantha and me. Then, he turned and walked up to Samantha.I saw his retreating back and suddenly felt like laughing.…The corridor seemed to have no end. I followed behind him and entered the observation room.Samantha leaned against the headboard. Her face was as pale as a sheet, and her eyes were red-rimmed. She teared up as soon a

Ethan sat in his office late into the night. The ashtray in front of him was full of cigarette butts. When he saw Charles come in, he was hesitant to speak.Charles placed the photocopies of the medical records on the table and pressed the play button.Color gradually drained from Ethan's face. He shot to his feet, and the chair fell backward. He propped both hands on the table, his head hanging low, his body shaking violently. After a long while, he finally raised his head, his eyes bloodshot."I helped her. I have been helping her. I defended her for you. I reproached Natalie because of you. I said those things because of her…"Charles stood in front of Ethan in silence. Ethan choked up. "Mr. Lowe is my mentor. He taught me how to use a gun and educated me. When he was in the hospital, I promised him I'd take care of Nat. What have I done, though? I defended the person who killed him. I asked Nat not to hold it against Sammy."He raised his arm and slapped himself, again an

Chapter 9

The police arrived sooner than I had expected. The doors to the hall were pushed open. The police came in and showed their ID cards. "Samantha Wood, you're suspected of murder, and you're under arrest."With both knees on the ground, Samantha gradually raised her head, her voice calm. "I've been diagnosed with a mental illness. I'll be sent to the hospital even if you arrest me, and I'll be released after a few years."After a momentary pause, she cast her gaze upon Charles. "And Natalie? She will never come back."Everyone in the hall went silent.Ethan stood at the side without saying a word. He clenched his fists so hard that his knuckles turned white. Before everyone could react, Ethan seized Samantha by the neck and hauled her toward the window.Samantha shrieked. Her gown was caught on the carpet and tore. She dragged her nails across Ethan's arm, leaving a few scratch marks, but he didn't seem to feel the pain."You're crazy!" Samantha's voice was piercing. "How can you
