Chapter 1

Just then, I caught Wyatt’s hand sliding over Queenie’s thigh.I set my phone face down on the table. The lucky charm in the photo was unmistakable. I could never confuse it with another, since I had climbed three thousand steps at Pavren Peak to obtain it.I had even sewn Queenie’s initials onto it in gold thread myself. That made it one of a kind.Lifting my fork, I speared the meat and brought it to my mouth. It had cooled, and the grease left a slick coating in my throat.Wyatt watched me chew, and a teasing smile formed on his face. “Is it tasty?”“Yeah.” I swallowed and met his gaze. “You should try some.”He dismissed it. “I already had a taste while Queenie was cooking. I’m full.”Queenie’s hand trembled. Her fork clinked sharply against her plate.Wyatt’s grin widened. “I was just testing the flavor. Don’t overthink it, Calvin.”I said nothing and reached for more vegetables.Under the table, a foot nudged my calf.I knew it was not Queenie’s.She had on soft sli

Wyatt did not leave after dinner. He slouched on the couch and told Queenie to cut some fruit. “Queenie, peel the apples. I don’t eat the skin.”Queenie answered from the kitchen as I sat in the single chair and watched the basketball game on TV.Wyatt lit a cigarette and tapped the ash onto the carpet.“Calvin, how’s your company doing lately? Is the cash flow okay?”I answered quietly, “It’s fine. Why do you ask?”He blew out a smoke ring. “I’ve had my eye on a Ferrari for a long time. Cover me with two million dollars for a bit.”It was not a request. He expected me to hand it over.I used to think that friends did not sweat the small stuff. However, it turned out that I was nothing but their cash machine and a thorough fool.I replied calmly, “The project’s holding up some funds. I can’t spare that kind of money.”Wyatt knitted his brows as he stubbed out his cigarette in the unfinished fruit platter.“Come on, Calvin. That’s disappointing. Are you saying that our frien

The next day, I went to the office as usual. I turned on my laptop and checked the home surveillance. As expected, Wyatt was there and stretched out on my bed in my pajamas.Queenie came in with breakfast and fed him.“Has that fool left?” Wyatt asked.“Yes. He has to work late tonight.” Queenie sat at the edge of the bed.Wyatt pulled her into his arms, and the breakfast almost spilled onto the sheets.Queenie pushed him lightly, but she kept her body pressed against his. “Don’t make a mess. Calvin will notice when he gets back.”“He won’t notice a thing. He’s totally oblivious.” Wyatt reached into her blouse. “We didn’t quite satisfy ourselves yesterday, so let’s make up for it today.”The surveillance footage began to shake violently. I muted the sound and focused solely on the image.I watched them move from the bedroom to the living room and then onto the balcony.Wyatt even deliberately pressed Queenie against our wedding photo. It was the largest framed wedding photo

Three months into her pregnancy, Queenie’s bump had become noticeable.Wyatt grew bolder by the day in my own home.He converted my study into his gaming den, emptied half of my liquor cabinet, and even started bossing me around.“Calvin, buy some chicken. Queenie wants soup.“Calvin, the floor’s dirty. Mop it before she slips.“Calvin, we’re watching a movie. Draw the curtains.”I obeyed every order like a servant. They were getting shameless, and they made no effort to hide it from me.Wyatt and Queenie sat on the couch and shared a single blanket. He fidgeted restlessly beneath it, and she could not suppress a muffled moan.I stepped out carrying the freshly made chicken broth. “Soup’s ready.”Wyatt did not even glance at me. “Set it down there. It’s hot. I’ll feed Queenie in a bit.”Queenie blushed. “You don’t have to. I can manage myself.”“What’s there to worry about? Calvin doesn’t mind.” Wyatt looked at me and smirked provocatively. “Isn’t that right, Calvin?”“Ye

Wyatt ripped the USB from the TV, and the screen went pitch black. He spun around and glared at me with red and wild eyes. He looked like a cornered, rabid dog.“You knew all along? You’ve been screwing with us this whole time?”Wyatt was still clutching the vasectomy certificate, and the paper crumpled beyond recognition in his grip.I felt nothing but amusement as I watched him fume with frustration.“Screwing with you? You’re the ones who thought I was an idiot.”I walked to the dining table. Picking up the untouched bowl of chicken broth, I took a slow, deliberate sip.“It tastes good, but it’s a shame I was the one who paid for this chicken.”Queenie’s voice shook. “Calvin, hear me out… It was Wyatt! He forced me! He made me do it!”She lunged toward me. When I sidestepped her, she hit the floor hard and groaned as her belly absorbed the impact.Wyatt stared at Queenie in disbelief.“What the heck are you saying, Queenie? Who was begging me in the car? Who said she didn

The security guards dragged Wyatt out.He fought to stay, though. He screamed and insisted I was holding him against his will and that I wanted him dead. The security guards ignored him and dragged him out like dead weight. They then tossed him at the residential area’s gate.Queenie packed her things in tears. She tried to grab her designer bags and jewelry.I leaned against the doorframe and said coldly, “I bought all of those. They are marital property. If you take anything, you’ll have to compensate me for half of its value.”Queenie stared at me in disbelief.I knew she had no money; Wyatt had maxed out all her cards. In the end, all she took was a plastic bag stuffed with a few outfits, and she slunk away with her tail between her legs. Before leaving, she looked back at me with spite.“You’ll regret this, Calvin. You’re heartless. You’ll get what’s coming to you.”I merely smiled and shut the door. Finally, peace returned to the house. The next day, I submitted the e

Six months later, Wyatt was convicted. The court sentenced him to twelve years for embezzlement and misappropriation of funds, with the charges combined. He protested loudly as he went in, insisting that I had framed him. But no one believed a word he said.As for Queenie, she gave birth to a boy. However, because of poor nutrition during pregnancy and her struggles with depression, the baby was born with a congenital heart defect. The surgery would cost a fortune. With no money to pay for it, she knelt outside my office building as she held her baby.“Calvin, please… save my child!” she cried. “He’s innocent. This is a life! I know I’ve messed up. I’ll work for you for the rest of my life. Please just give me some money.”Her hair was streaked with gray, and her face looked worn and gaunt. It was as if she had aged twenty years. The security guards moved to chase her away, but I waved them off and walked over. The instant Queenie saw me, her eyes lit up as if she had found a

Three years later, I ran a new company in another city, and business was thriving. That day, at a business cocktail party, someone introduced me to a prospective partner.“Mr. Lloyd, this is Mr. Wagner. He just returned from abroad and works in venture capital.”I extended my hand. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Wagner.”He shook my hand firmly.“Mr. Lloyd, it’s an honor,” he said.I looked up and saw a familiar face.It was not Wyatt or Queenie, but a young man I had never seen before. His eyes were bright and full of drive, yet something in his features reminded me of my younger self.“Mr. Lloyd, I heard you once had a… legendary chapter in Alverich?” he asked cautiously.I chuckled and released his hand. “That’s all in the past. People have to keep moving forward.”After the party ended, I walked alone along the river. The river breeze was chilly, and I pulled my coat tighter around me.A giant screen in the distance broadcast the news.“A man serving time in prison has becom
