Josh's POVThe common room was quiet at this hour. Only a few dim bulbs glowed in the corners. I pushed the door open slowly and saw Serena sitting on the long couch near the window. Her legs were tucked under her as she read a novel with a torn cover. She wore a loose white shirt and a tight black skirt. Her hair was loose, falling around her face. She was really there. I was afraid she wouldn't be.I almost didn't come, thinking she wouldn't show up. There she was, looking gorgeous as always.I sent her a text asking her to meet me in the common room, and the only reply I got was 'Ok'. That was the shortest text she ever sent me. It's been only a day since we fought, but I couldn't bear it anymore. She looked up as I got closer.“Josh,” she said softly, dropping the book.I walked faster, closing up the distance between us. My heart was beating too fast. My relationship with her was special. I almost threw it away because of jealousy.I sat down beside her. Close enough that our arm

Kayla's POVI walked quietly down the corridor. The common room door was firmly shut as I passed but I heard soft movement inside. Rustling clothes and low murmurs. People were definitely in there, having a good time. I smirked because I was going to do the same. I just wouldn't be doing it at the common room. The male hostel was on the other side of the academy grounds. I kept to the shadows, avoiding the patrol paths. There was a curfew so there were more guards around than ever. My heart beat faster the closer I got. Bastian was waiting at the secret room. We'd been building up to this moment for the past few weeks. Stolen kisses, gentle touches, meetings way beyond visiting hours. . .I slipped past the male hostel and moved silently up the back stairs. The secret room was on the third floor. It was an old storage space barely anyone remembered. I knocked twice, paused, then knocked once more. The door opened almost immediately.Bastian pulled me inside and locked the door behi

Mira's POVI was napping when my phone buzzed beside me on the bed. My eyes flicked open. I was dreaming that Caden and I were stuck in the middle of a Dracthari attack. Ever since they found those symbols, it was a struggle for me not to think of those monsters.I picked up my phone and checked the screen.Aunt Michelle. Incoming video call.~Oh, no. Not now.~I set down the phone and stared at the screen until the buzzing stopped. Two seconds later it started again. I exhaled slowly. She really wanted to talk, but how could she see me like this when my arm was still bandaged?Ignoring her calls would scare her and make her suspect something was wrong. I heaved a sigh and answered the call.I shifted on the bed, angling my bandaged arm away from the camera as her face appeared on the screen.Aunt Michelle wore a white jacket that matched her blond hair. A mug of something hot was in her hand. From the background, I could tell she was in the kitchen. It was early in the morning, and

Caden's POVWe went straight to the common room and it was empty as I expected. I'd checked before coming to find her.I needed somewhere quiet. Somewhere we could sit and open our hearts to each other without getting interrupted.I closed the door behind us. Mira settled into the corner of the long couch and crossed her legs. She looked stunning in a grey jacket and black pants. I settled on the chair beside her and stared at her."What do you think about the symbols?" Mira asked suddenly."What do I think? I don't know.""Do you think they're real or someone was just messing around?" She asked."Do you know anyone who thinks drawing Dracthari symbols is a good way to mess around?""No.""So we both know it's not a joke. The organisers of this competition know the truth as well. But they are handling it the way they handle everything. Which is carefully and slowly and without saying anything that might cause alarm."Mira leaned back on the couch. "I'm not going to pretend I'm not wor

Caden's POV"Have you seen the notice?" Cael asked when he came into the dorm.I was dressing up to go for breakfast. I'd gotten back to the dorm after spending the better part of the early hours in the common room with Mira."What notice?" I asked in return."There's a notice pinned to the board outside the dining hall.""What's it about?""Three evenings of events for us to unwind. They're pausing the fights for now," Cael revealed."Why does it feel like they're trying to distract us from the Dracthari thing? I never imagined having a festival in the middle of a Shifter Warrior Competition."Cael shrugged. "Stranger things have happened before."I buttoned up my shirt and stepped out. I needed to see the notice myself. It was outside the dining hall just as Cael described. The event was real. We would start off with the music and dance contest. There was a segment for dancers to pair and compete against others.I stepped away from the notice board, convinced that the organising cou

Mira's POVTyrell was in the middle of telling me something about a funny incident with a patient when a hand closed on my shoulder.I looked up.Caden was standing behind me. He didn't look at Tyrell. He simply stood there with his hand on my shoulder, claiming me. Tyrell swallowed. He couldn't continue the story he was telling me. The silence was pretty awkward. "I'll see you tomorrow," Tyrell said, getting up. "Sure," I replied. Tyrell found another seat and Caden settled next to me. "Are you enjoying the show?" He asked me. "It was fun seeing Josh dance." He stayed silent, staring at the stage. Once the council announced the day's event was over, Caden got up and took my hand. I followed Caden out of the row, stepping past knees and bags.Caden kept walking. We went through the east corridor and out through the side door that opened onto the narrow garden path.We stopped at the garden. He let go of my hand and turned to face me. "Why do you keep moving with him?" he aske

Serena's POVI rubbed my eyes and let out a yawn. I'd fallen straight onto my bed after returning from the arena. I didn't bother with dinner. The dance contest thing I did with Josh was fun, but it was also exhausting.A smile stretched my lips when I thought about my passionate kiss with Josh in front of everyone. I still remembered the way everyone cheered.I checked my phone and saw three missed calls from Josh. It was some minutes past eleven. All the other girls in the hostel were fast asleep.I dialed Josh's number and he answered at the first ring. "Hey, love. I crashed when I got to my hostel. I missed your calls.""I know you're still talking to him, Serena."I opened my mouth and closed it again. I hadn't expected him to talk about Deo. It came out of nowhere and made it tough for me to deny."I can explain. . .""Don't." He growled. "I saw the messages."I wanted to ask him how, but it didn't matter."It isn't what you think.""How many times are you going to tell me to be

Mira's POVSerena's bed was empty when I woke up.My eyes went there automatically. Her blanket was pulled back but not made. Her phone was on the bed.I sat up and rubbed my face. She probably went for an early walk. Or to see Josh before breakfast. That was something she did sometimes, slipping out before the rest of the dorm woke up. She would return with colour in her cheeks and a smile she tried to hide and failed at completely.I showered and dressed up for the day's activities. By the time I came back, the other girls were beginning to stir. I checked the time. An hour before breakfast.Still no Serena.I pushed the thought aside and went to train with Caden."You're distracted. Are you okay? What's on your mind?" Caden asked when I failed a move three times in the row."It's nothing. I'll be fine."After our training, I went back to the dorm to freshen up. Serena still wasn't back. I went down to the dining hall, wondering what the hell was going on.I took my tray and found a

Josh's POVMira and I walked to the security office together. Neither of us spoke much on the way. There wasn't much to say. Serena was missing and every minute we spent standing still felt like a mistake. The security office was a wide room near the administrative block with a large desk at the front and three officers behind it. Filing cabinets lined one wall. A board covered in patrol schedules and shift rotations hung on the other. The lead officer looked up when we walked in. He was a broad man in his forties with reading glasses pushed up on his forehead and a coffee mug that had clearly been refilled many times today."We want to report a missing person," I said. "One of the students. Serena Wilkins from Stormveil Academy."He reached for a notepad. "When did you last see her?""Last night. She wasn't in her dorm this morning. Her phone is still in the room. But she hasn't been seen since."He scribbled on the note. "And what time last night? I need something specific.""Someti

Mira's POVI stared at the scrambled eggs and grilled chicken on my plate. It looked appetising, but my appetite was dead. Ever since Serena disappeared from the dorm, I couldn't bring myself to eat. I already skipped breakfast and lunch. The dining hall was loud around me. Plates clattered and chairs scraped as contestants ate. Someone at the far end of the room was laughing loudly at something. The festival had put everyone in a lighter mood and nobody around me seemed to notice or care that one of us was missing.I took one bite of the eggs and put my fork down.It tasted like paper. I'd been sitting here for ten minutes, but I couldn't manage to eat. My stomach was tight and the noise of the hall was pressing against the inside of my head.I looked at Serena's usual seat across from me. Empty. I looked at the seat Josh always took beside her. Also empty.Josh didn't come to dinner. I'd gone to his room in the male hostel, knocked twice. No answer. I heard movement inside so I kne
