Caden's POVThree days. That was how long it has been since I last saw Mira. Three days since I passed her on the eastern path and noticed her posture was slightly off, and she told me she was fine and kept walking. Two days since she missed our training session without a word.I told myself she had withdrawn from the competition. It happened. Contestants dropped out for all kinds of reasons. Injury. Personal circumstances. Sometimes, the pressure of the competition became larger than they had anticipated. There was no shame in it. People made that call and went home and the competition continued without them.I told myself that was what had happened. I didn't fully believe it, though.I stood at the edge of the viewing area and watched Riven take his position in the ring below. He was fighting a candidate from Westhill, a broad guy with a shaved head who had apparently broken his opponents' arm in his previous fight. It was the kind of detail that would unsettle you before a fight ev

Mira's POVI sat up bed in the medic room, waiting for Tyrell to finish checking my shoulder and decide if I could be discharged. His gloved fingers pressed around the edges of the wound. I felt the warmth of his breath on my arm as he examined the color of the skin beneath the dressing. His musk fragrance filled my nostrils. Tyrell's brow was slightly furrowed in concentration. The morning light that came through the narrow window made his skin glow. His jaw was sharp and I noticed he had such inviting lips.~Why am I thinking about him like this?~I turned slightly and faced the wall."Okay, your wounds is healing well," he remarked. "The infection is clearing. The fever hasn't returned." .He stepped back and pulled off his gloves. "You can go."Something loosened in my chest. "Thank you.""You're welcome." He moved to the counter and began writing on his notepad. His handwriting was neat and deliberate. "You need to keep it clean and dry. Change the dressing every morning. If it

Caden's POV I sat in the arena next to Riven and Bastian, watching the instructor walk up to the stage. I missed the last two fights because I had a muscle pull while training and had to stay in bed with an ice pack strapped to my thigh. "For the next match, we have Mira Larsen of Westhill versus Sharon Smith of Ironridge." I froze the moment I heard Mira's name. She walked out from the entrance set aside for the competitors and strutted into the ring. Wow, she was here. She hadn't withdrawn. Three days of telling myself she must have gone home, that was the only reasonable explanation for he disappearance. But here she was, walking into the ring with her chin up and her eyes burning with the desire to win. ~If she's still here, why didn't she come to training?~ I thought something serious happened to her. The whole time she'd been somewhere on this campus, well enough to walk and well enough to compete, and she didn't reach out to me. My jaw tightened. She clearly didn't value

Veron's POVA knock sounded on my office door and Vessa walked in.She stood just inside the door with her arms folded and her jaw set in the way that reminded me, uncomfortably, of her mother. I knew right away something had happened."What's wrong?""The council questioned me," she said."What council?""The organisers. They questioned me about the attack on the beastless girl."I set down my pen. "What did they ask?""Whether I knew anything about it. Whether I had any involvement." Her voice was steady but there was sadness underneath it. "They didn't say it outright. But it felt like an accusation."I leaned back in my chair and studied her. "What reason did they give for accusing you?""They didn't accuse me directly. The way they asked the questions..." She stopped and pressed her lips together. "Yes, I don't like her, but I didn't do anything to her."I believed her. Not because I trusted her judgment entirely, but because I knew my daughter well enough to know how she operate

Mira's POVCaden's breath was still warm against my ear.I stayed very still for a moment. His hand hadn't moved from my wrist. He really wanted me to tell Tyrell to leave. I swallowed, aware of both men looking at me. As much as I liked Tyrell and owed him for taking care of me, it was hard to say no to Caden. "Tyrell," I said. "You can leave everything here. I'll see you later."Something flashed in eyes, then it vanished. Tyrell nodded and came further into the room, setting the tray and the paper bag on the bedside table. He straightened up and glanced at the medication."Take the white ones with food," he said. "Not after. With. Please, keep that in mind.""Yes, I will.""The other two are for the infection. Morning and night. Don't skip.""I won't."He looked at me one moment longer than necessary. Then his eyes moved to the mark on Caden's neck. It was still visible above his collar. Tyrell looked back at me once more, then he turned and walked out, pulling the door shut be
