ELENA’S POV The peak of the ancient Ancestral Crag was a jagged needle of black granite that pierced the belly of the low, violet sky. The wind at this altitude carried the frantic, desperate weight of a dying race. Below us, the valleys of the North were dark, save for the scattering of small, desperate campfires from our battered independent packs and the distant, ominous magma-glow of Nikolai’s advancing siege lines. We had surrendered the border ridge. Our army had fallen back into the mountains, outnumbered and surrounded. Every hour bought us less time than the one before. "The mountain air is too thin for your lungs, Kaelen," I murmured, my voice calm despite the storm raging around us. "I can hold the baseline, Elena," Kaelen’s thought came back through our quicksilver link, though his voice was nothing but a rattling gasp behind me. He was kneeling at the base of the sacred boundary stone, his blistered fingers tracing the ancient, ink-etched runes of the pack laws.
