Chapter 1

I had been an emergency physician for almost ten years.I had always valued my patients' lives more than my own.So when the department called, I barely hesitated.I immediately turned around and headed back. But just as I was about to reach the emergency building entrance, floating comments suddenly appeared out of nowhere before my eyes.I froze.I shook my head and rubbed my eyes desperately, wondering if too many night shifts had finally broken my brain. But the comments were still rolling steadily above my head.[It's over. The moment you step into the operating room, they will announce the patient's death.][They are waiting for you to go in and become the scapegoat.][The entire operating room will cover for the hospital director's daughter, Olivia Hart, and accuse you of causing the patient's death through surgical error.][Be careful!]My mouth fell open.Olivia Hart had been my roommate for four years in medical school and my closest friend. Why would she choose

Chapter 2

As long as I never appeared in the operating room, no one could accuse me.My eyes swept quickly across the ground.I immediately locked onto the road in front of the emergency building. There was an uncovered deep shaft that had not yet been sealed.I pretended to rush toward the emergency department. When I reached the opening, I gritted my teeth and shut my eyes. Then I threw myself hard into the shaft.A sudden feeling of weightlessness swallowed my whole body.I instinctively tensed. The next second, I slammed heavily onto the hard concrete at the bottom of the shaft. There was a dull thud. The impact seemed to shake pain through all my organs.Thankfully, the bottom of the shaft was dry and had no standing water. But the bare, hard ground offered no cushioning at all.A violent wave of pain spread from my head and lower leg through my entire body.I trembled in agony, cold sweat soaking through my clothes almost instantly.I knew very clearly that I had most likel

Chapter 3

The male doctor responsible for treating my wounds was Daniel Reed from my department. When he saw my face, his hands paused. His pupils shrank sharply."Dr. Doherty? You... why are you here? Shouldn't you be in the operating room resuscitating the patient right now?"As soon as he said that, the police officer beside me spoke first."Oh? She is a doctor at your hospital? She accidentally fell into a deep shaft. We just rescued her."Daniel froze. His gaze fell on my face. His mouth opened, then closed, as if he wanted to speak several times but stopped himself. It seemed he knew something. But in front of the police officers, he did not dare say another word.He could only silently pick up his instruments and carefully treat my wounds. The debridement and suturing process was clear and torturous. The cut on my forehead alone needed three stitches. My right leg was placed in a cast because of the fracture. Then I was pushed into the exam room for a head CT.Fortunately,

Chapter 4

Standing before the family members was Olivia Hart in surgical scrubs. She lowered her eyes and let out a deliberately heavy sigh."I am sorry. We did everything we could. The resuscitation failed, and the patient has been pronounced dead."The family members instantly collapsed.Their heart-wrenching sobs exploded through the hallway. Then Olivia changed the subject. Her tone carried a subtle accusation as she intentionally pointed the blame toward me."Actually, there was a strong chance he could have been saved. Unfortunately, the lead surgeon, Dr. Evelyn Doherty, made repeated mistakes, and that was why..."Her words were like sparks falling into a pile of explosives, instantly igniting everyone's rage."Where is Evelyn Doherty? Why doesn't she dare come out?""A doctor who treats human life like nothing! We need an explanation!"The family members were immediately enraged, screaming that I had to pay with my life.I sat in the wheelchair, quietly watching her twist the

On the phone screen was the complete surveillance footage from the hospital entrance. There were no signs of editing or tampering.Every second of the video was hard evidence. The surveillance footage clearly recorded the timeline. At 9:00 a.m., I clocked out on time and walked out of the hospital gate.At 9:10, I received a call from the department outside the hospital entrance and hurriedly turned back.At 9:18, because of my negligence, I stepped into the uncovered shaft and fell straight down. For the long twenty minutes after that, I had no ability to rescue myself or leave. The police officer's gaze was cold as he swept it over the crowd. Then he spoke slowly, his voice loud and clear."According to the construction workers' emergency report and the rescue process, Dr. Evelyn Doherty was trapped in the shaft the entire time and had lost all ability to move."He emphasized each word."May I ask how someone trapped at the bottom of a shaft with a fractured right leg cou

Chapter 6

The handwriting was neat, the strokes consistent.Even colleagues who had worked with me for years all agreed that it was my personal signature. At the same time, the nurses and doctors from the operating room all gave the same testimony."That's right! Dr. Doherty was the lead surgeon for the entire emergency resuscitation.""We were all in the operating room the whole time and saw it with our own eyes. That was Dr. Evelyn Doherty herself.""We do not know how she ended up in the shaft, but we have worked together for so many years. We would never mistake her for someone else."Flawless surveillance footage, a personal signature, and collective accusations from multiple medical staff members. The complete chain of evidence locked the blame firmly onto me.The public opinion that had nearly overturned a moment ago instantly reversed again. The crowd that had just fallen silent was ignited with fury once more. This time, their anger was even stronger than before.Meanwhile, I

Chapter 7

The noisy crowd instantly quieted.Everyone paused and turned to look at me.Behind the crowd, panic and guilt flashed through Olivia's eyes. She immediately stepped forward and scolded me loudly, trying to stir up the crowd again."Evelyn! The evidence is overwhelming. The witnesses and physical proof are all right here. Are you still trying to deny it and push responsibility away?"I did not waste any more words arguing.I raised my hand and yanked down my collar. My smooth, unmarked neck was exposed to everyone. There was not even the slightest trace of a red birthmark.Every word I said was clear and firm."Look carefully. I, Evelyn Doherty, have never had any red birthmark on my neck from childhood until now."But the person impersonating me in that video has a unique red birthmark on her neck. That person is clearly Olivia Hart!"The crowd erupted. The police officer immediately reacted to the flaw and stepped forward quickly. He grabbed Olivia, who was frantically

Since my school days, I had an unknown habit. After finishing the last character of my name, I would habitually add a tiny round dot at the end.It was an unconscious writing habit I had developed over many years. In daily signatures, my pen pressure was very light, and the dot was so faint it was almost invisible.I had never intentionally mentioned it to anyone.Even Olivia had never noticed. Her forged signature looked perfect at first glance, but it carried the most fatal flaw."These signatures are all fake. At the end of the name, they are missing the small dot that belongs only to my signature."Olivia's fingertips trembled violently. The panic in her eyes could no longer be hidden. She had never known I had this habit, and her composure instantly collapsed. To make the evidence undeniable, the officer immediately spoke in a deep voice."Retrieve every medical record Dr. Evelyn Doherty has signed in this hospital over the past three months for on-site verification and

Chapter 9

The ambulance footage showed the truth. When the severely injured patient was loaded into the ambulance, his condition was critical, but his vital signs were relatively stable. He was far from dead on arrival. It was Olivia who ignored every emergency worker's objections and acted on her own.She blindly administered a large dose of medication. Her operation was extremely nonstandard. It directly caused the patient's intracranial pressure to spike. On the way back to the hospital, the patient had already suffered brain death. The footage clearly recorded Olivia's panic at the time and the entire process of her calling Director Hart to discuss what to do.Every piece of evidence formed a perfect closed loop. The truth was revealed to the world. The real people who had treated human life like nothing were Olivia Hart and Hospital Director Theodore Hart.Looking at the complete and clear truth before them, the patient's family was filled with tangled emotions. They instantly r

Chapter 10

My colleagues in the department were all deeply grateful to me for that. When I dragged my exhausted body home, it was already noon. The moment I slowly pushed open the door, the rich, warm smell of home-cooked food greeted me.A gentle warmth instantly wrapped around my whole body.My parents were sitting anxiously at the dining table, waiting for me.The moment they saw me come in, they both stood up at once.Their eyes first landed on the gauze on my head. Then their gazes froze on the cast on my right leg.My mother rushed over to me, her face full of shock and fear."Evelyn! What happened? What exactly happened to you? How did you end up like this?"Your father and I called you more than ten times, and you didn't pick up once. We were so scared we almost lost our minds. We were just about to go to the hospital to look for you."Seeing my parents' reddened eyes, all the grievance I had held in for half a day broke open in that moment. My nose stung sharply.I could no
