Chapter 1

I collapsed in the street with my clothes in disarray. Vanessa Coleman looked at me with eyes full of aching concern and draped a jacket over me."Don't talk about it," she comforted me. "Let's go home first."The eyes of neighbors and acquaintances cut into me like knives.I shuddered all over and finally believed that I really had been reborn. In my previous life, I had been kidnapped for no clear reason. Twenty-four hours later, I was dumped outside my own home.I was a wreck, filthy and drained.Vanessa put on the perfect-wife act, terrified that anyone might touch my wounds. She forbade everyone from asking me what had happened.Even when I asked her myself, she refused without hesitation."You're very fragile right now. Get some rest first. Leave everything else to me."Back then, I was dazed enough to believe she was thinking of me.But within three days, the rumor that I had been retaliated against for some shameful affair had spread everywhere.By the time I tried

In my previous life, I asked her "How is the police investigation going?" many times. At first, she always said, "Soon. Soon."Later, once she lost patience, she said flatly that the case had already been closed. But the rumors around me only grew uglier. People said I was unfaithful, that I brought bad luck to my wife. The constant judgmental looks from every direction drove me to the point where I had to swallow handfuls of sleeping pills just to fall asleep.Later, when I found out Vanessa was cheating and argued with her, everyone ganged up on me.They all wore the same look, as if they had known it all along."Looks like he still hasn't gotten over the trauma.""He's gone crazy! He's imagining things now!""His wife is already kind enough not to despise him. Does he have to drive everyone mad before he's happy?"Vanessa had me forced into a psychiatric hospital.Electric shocks tore through my bones. I screamed every night and even lost control of my bladder. But in th

My parents and I exchanged a glance, but none of us said anything.Vanessa was uneasy and urged me to go home again."It's late. Stop bothering your parents. Let's go home."As she spoke, she reached out to pull me, as if afraid I might stay one more second.I lifted my hand and stepped back."I'm not going back for the next few days."As soon as I said that, Vanessa's expression changed. She glanced at me in panic.Seeing that I did not look as if I had discovered anything, she immediately became aggressive."What do you mean? What's wrong with home that you won't go back? Our son and I haven't even eaten dinner!"There are rumors everywhere outside. Our son is older now. Can't you think about him? How is he supposed to face his classmates in the future?"My son's face darkened as he looked at me."Yeah, Dad. What's wrong with you? It isn't like Mom and I kidnapped you. Is it really necessary not to come home? Have you thought about my reputation?"My chest felt so clogged

So early the next morning, I went back to pack my things.Vanessa's relatives were all sitting together. It looked like they were preparing to gang up on me again.I could still clearly remember how ugly their words had been in my previous life."You've already done such a shameless thing. Why are you still making trouble about divorce?""If you didn't like attracting trouble, why would anyone kidnap you?""If you have any humanity left, just live your life quietly and stop making a scene!"With a clang, I pushed the door open. The anxiety on Vanessa's face instantly cleared. But she controlled the curve of her lips and still put on an arrogant front in front of me."You still have the nerve to come back! Because you didn't come home yesterday, no one changed Dad's diaper. His thighs are red and raw."Go kneel to him and apologize, and I'll let bygones be bygones and reluctantly forgive you."I swept my cold gaze over the room. After only one day away, the house already reek

Vanessa's face turned deathly pale, and beads of sweat broke out on her forehead. But she still clung to a sliver of hope. In the next second, before she could open her mouth, a police officer pulled her out directly."You're under arrest."Aiden stared, dumbfounded, and rushed over."Officer, you must have made a mistake. What did my mom do? Why are you arresting her?"Vanessa's other relatives also panicked."Yes, officer. Our Vanessa is a good girl. You must have it wrong!"The officer frowned at them and warned loudly, "Vanessa Coleman is suspected of kidnapping. If you have questions, take them to the police station."As soon as he finished, everyone's expression froze.Aiden stood there as if struck dumb. When he came back to himself, his eyes were red.The neighbors wore looks of sudden realization and whispered among themselves."So it was staged? That's terrifying. You really can't judge people by appearances.""She'd even scheme against the person sharing her bed.

When he saw I was about to leave, Aiden grabbed my arm and burst into tears."Dad, I... I..."I shook him off with the back of my hand.I had not forgotten the way he had stood aside as if none of it concerned him when his mother tried to send me to a psychiatric hospital.Aiden was not reluctant to lose me. He was afraid there would be no one left to take care of him.Because deep down, he knew very well that I was the one who gave the most to that family.Seeing that my heart was hard, Aunt Marsha began shrieking like a shrew."Miles Lawson, is your heart made of stone? How can you be this vicious and say such things to a child? If you dare abandon him, I'll post you online and let the whole country see your ugly face!""Go ahead," I said with a faint smile. "Then the whole country will know you have a niece who's a criminal. Guess whether your three sons will still be able to find wives after that."Aunt Marsha's face froze. The rest of her words stuck in her throat, stutt

Then I told her the real reason I had come."I'm here to divorce you."With a clang, Vanessa shot to her feet. She roared at me in fury. "Don't even think about it. I'll never divorce you."Compared with her loss of control, my emotions remained mild."If you won't cooperate, then we have nothing to discuss. I'll have to sue."Vanessa panicked. For an instant, her expression went blank. Then she seemed to think of something and looked at me with a sneer."Even if we divorce, I won't give you our son. Treat me like this, and Aiden will hate you forever!"I nodded, understanding and agreeable. "You can have Aiden. I don't want him."My tone was light, and my words and demeanor carried not a trace of concern.Vanessa's mind seemed to buzz. She dropped onto the floor.Only now did she finally understand how firm my resolve was."You don't even want your own child. You don't deserve to be a father, you heartless bastard. I--""Calm down!"The police interrupted her abuse.Van
