Watching the residents around me get worked up and shout for someone to call the police, I clenched my fists hard. The penthouse lady, Melissa Grant, only looked more pleased when I stayed silent. She clicked toward me in her heels, pointed at my face, and sneered, “See that? Nothing to say now? That’s what guilty people look like.”Every instinct in me wanted to take her down on the spot. But I forced myself to stay still.I reminded myself that the entire team was counting on me. I could not let my temper ruin the operation. If I made a move now, the high-priority fugitive hiding in Unit 2801, Victor Grant, Melissa’s husband, would definitely slip away.We had spent three full months watching this building for this one chance.“Mrs. Grant, why waste your breath on trash like him?”Derek Cole, the head of security, was desperate to please her. He shoved me hard. The force nearly sent me crashing into the pillar beside me.Truthfully, I could have dodged it.I could have gr

Derek was desperate to show off in front of the man he was trying so hard to impress. He grabbed me by the hair and shoved my face toward the drop of soup on Melissa’s heel. Some of the onlookers even started whistling.“Come on, kid. Don’t be stupid. That’s ten grand. What’s one lick?”“Exactly. If I had that chance, I’d clean the whole shoe.”“Why act so noble? Delivery guys serve people for a living anyway.”My face was less than two inches from Melissa’s heel. All I had to do was open my mouth. The money would be mine, and I could keep playing the part. But if I did that, I would be betraying the badge I wore beneath this uniform.Still, I had no choice.Because just then, a faint crackle sounded in my earpiece. That meant my team was blocking the signal on this floor and preparing to move in.They needed thirty more seconds.I had to buy them those thirty seconds.I clenched my jaw, my whole body shaking from humiliation and tension. To everyone else, it looked lik

The caller was Claire Watson. My fiancée.The moment I picked up, her anxious, annoyed voice came through the phone.“Jack Lawson, where are you? Tonight is the first time you’re officially meeting my parents. You didn’t forget, did you?“My mom and my uncle are already in the private room. Don’t tell me you’re still out delivering food.”Hearing that, I smacked my forehead. For the past three months, I had been watching Victor Grant day and night. I ate, slept, and worked around Aurelia Heights, running on almost no rest for over ninety days. For the sake of confidentiality, I had told everyone I was doing delivery work.Even Claire had no idea I was actually on an undercover operation.“I didn’t forget. I just finished my last order. I’ll be there soon.”Twenty minutes later, I walked into the private dining room carrying two bottles of premium single-malt Scotch I had bought on the way. There were seven or eight people inside.Besides Claire and her parents, a heavyset m

Brandon jolted as if he had been shocked and slapped my hand away. His face flushed red with humiliation and rage.“Bullshit! Stop acting like you’re some big shot!”Brandon shouted hysterically, “You’re a delivery guy. How could you possibly arrest my uncle? You probably saw something happen at Aurelia Heights while making deliveries and came here to scare us!”Claire’s mother and uncle had been frightened stiff at first. But once they heard Brandon’s explanation, they both let out a long breath of relief.“That’s right. I almost let this broke kid fool me!”Claire’s uncle pointed at me, furious. “Delivery guys may not have real skills, but they run all over the city every day. Of course they hear gossip faster than everyone else.”“Even if something really happened to Mr. Grant, what does that have to do with you? Who are you trying to impress?”Marianne slammed the table in anger.“Claire, look at him! Look at this ridiculous act! Just to save face, he’ll even tell a lie t
