Chapter 1

"Oh my God. Did Poppy really die like this? Zara, don't look. It'll just mess you up."Holden Tyndall glanced at the body, disgust flashing across his face. Then he turned to me with an irritated look."And you. Why'd you bring the body here? What if you freaked Zara out? You're her husband. You're seriously dropping the ball."A cold laugh slipped out.Dropping the ball?Oliver wasn't even my blood. But when he got kidnapped, I lost my mind trying to save him.I called the cops.Spent three days and three nights negotiating with the kidnapper. Then, out of nowhere, all my bank cards got frozen. To scrape together the ransom, I begged everyone I knew for help.Meanwhile, Holden and Zara had their phones off.Blocked.Gone.The two people who should've cared most were just gone. And they were the reason the kidnappers killed him.I sneered. "If either of you had picked up and helped get the $500,000, that kid would still be alive."Holden's parents, Wilson and Catherine

Chapter 2

After Oliver's heart was removed, his body was dumped onto the morgue floor like a piece of trash. From a distance, I watched Wilson and Catherine wrinkle their noses and kick the body aside.A cold laugh escaped me.Then I walked out of the hospital.None of it had anything to do with me anymore.Ever since Poppy was a baby, Oliver had always found ways to hurt her. He'd hit her.Pinch her.Push her around. After Poppy learned to call Zara "Mommy," it got even worse.Whenever he heard it, he'd shove her down and start hitting her.And every single time, Zara took Oliver's side without even asking what happened.I was buried in work.By the time I realized how bad things were, the damage had already been done.Poppy didn't speak until she was five because of him.Even so, seeing how his own parents, Holden and Zara, treated him now made me shake my head.Pathetic.I'd planned to take Poppy to the amusement park for her birthday. But the second we stepped outside, Oliv

Chapter 3

And when she thought Poppy had been kidnapped and killed? She didn't care at all.I was done.***Rage lit up Zara's face. She swung at me."You're seriously bringing up divorce?"I caught her wrist and pushed it away. She snapped, "Because I froze your money? I only did that because guys get weird when they have cash! You never made me feel safe!"My face stayed cold.Zara finally softened. "None of us wanted what happened to Poppy. We need to move on. We're still alive. We can have another kid."I'll give you a son, okay?""We're never having another child."I shoved her aside and looked at her like she was a joke.Zara was about to blow up again when Holden leaned over and whispered something in her ear.Her expression changed instantly. She grabbed the divorce papers, signed them without a second thought, and tossed them at me."Fine. Let's get divorced. It's not like I want you anyway. Just don't come crying back when you regret it."I found out pretty quickly why

Chapter 4

Poppy had been sickly since the day she was born.My dad had picked out a pendant worth over ten million dollars and had it blessed just for her.Poppy wore it every single day.It never left her side.I yanked the pendant off Holden's neck and stared at him. "How did you get this?"Zara looked irritated. "I gave it to him. Got a problem with that?"I told you from the start. Poppy was just a girl. Trouble followed her. Something that valuable would only bring her more trouble."If you'd listened to me, she wouldn't have died. Now Holden can wear it, and his good luck can cancel out whatever bad luck she left behind."My hands trembled with rage.I couldn't hold back anymore.I slapped her across the face.Holden stepped in, all wounded pride."Zara's not wrong. A son carries the family name. A daughter means nothing."He looked at me, then smiled. "Don't worry. Even without Poppy, Oliver can treat you like his dad."You've got a massive fortune. Oliver can inherit it for

Chapter 5

Zara's hands shook as she grabbed the death certificate. She frantically shook her head."No. You're lying. How could the child who was kidnapped and tortured to death be Oliver?"Holden finally snapped out of it and desperately called Oliver's smartwatch. No answer. He immediately accessed the watch remotely.A video file appeared on the screen. The second the video started, Holden's pupils shrank. In the footage, the kidnapper tortured Oliver.Whipping him.Cutting him.Burning him.Splashing him with acid. Each thing he did was worse than the last. The child's screams echoed through the phone."Mommy! Daddy! It hurts! Please save me!"Zara ripped the phone from his hands. The moment she saw the video, she broke down.Tears streamed down her face. Then she looked up at me, her eyes full of hatred. She lunged at me and grabbed my collar. "It was you! You killed Oliver!"He was supposed to be with my parents!"Holden suddenly remembered the ashes and rushed over.

Chapter 6

I let out a cold laugh. "If Oliver wanted something and I said no, you all came at me like lunatics. Then he'd take it out on Poppy."For Poppy's sake, did I ever dare refuse him?""We don't care. If you hadn't taken Oliver to the amusement park, he never would've been kidnapped."Wilson and Catherine lunged at me, but my bodyguards stepped in.They froze, still glaring."You killed my grandson! I'll make you pay with your life!"My gaze turned icy."I was the one trying to save him. When you thought Poppy was the one kidnapped, did any of you care? If you hadn't moved my money, Oliver wouldn't have..."I let the words hang for a second. "You killed him."Zara looked completely broken.Feeling the hatred pouring off Wilson and Catherine, she clutched her head."No... It wasn't me. I didn't kill Oliver."A satisfied smile tugged at my lips."I've already gathered proof that you transferred my assets. I'll be filing a lawsuit soon. If that money isn't returned, get ready to

Chapter 7

Keira glanced at me, a little shy."Poppy's such a sweet kid. I really like her."As she spoke, her eyes stayed on me.Shy.But steady. The feelings behind that look were impossible to miss.I was about to change the subject when she asked, "I heard you got divorced. Have you thought about getting married again?"I shook my head."Not right now."The disappointment on her face was obvious."Oh."Half a month later, I ran into Zara again. She stepped in front of Poppy and me, blocking our way."I finally found you." She smiled. "Let's go home."Like nothing had ever happened, she reached for our hands.Poppy and I sidestepped her at the same time.Zara clearly hadn't been doing well. Her once-manicured hands were rough with calluses, and even layers of makeup couldn't hide the bruises on her face."I've been trying to reach you this whole time. Why haven't either of you answered? Did something happen to your phones? You're both so careless. You really need me looking a

I went on. "You wanted Poppy gone, so you hired the kidnapper. But your plan blew up in your face, and your own son died instead."I didn't care whether Zara could handle hearing it.I picked up Poppy and walked away.Poppy looked crushed. "Daddy, does Mom not like me because I'm not a boy? Is it my fault?"My chest hurt. "Of course not. Your mom not loving you is her failure, not yours. You're the best little girl in the world."Keira stepped over and scooped Poppy into her arms.Within seconds, she had her laughing again.Poppy had always wanted her mom's love. She used to bend over backward for Oliver, hoping Zara would love her a little. When Zara came back into our lives, I'd worried Poppy wouldn't be able to let go.Now, seeing how little she cared, I finally relaxed. My parents watched the three of us together and smiled.Keira sighed dramatically. "I wish I had a daughter as sweet as Poppy."Poppy grinned. "I wish I had a mom as awesome as Ms. Kay."The two of the

The mockery in my eyes sharpened. "What gives you the right to act like you care about Poppy?"Besides, Poppy really likes Keira."Zara's eyes filled with sadness."Do you have to hurt me like this? We were together for years. I'm still Poppy's mother."I was just the Tyndalls' adopted daughter. Oliver happened because they messed with my head when I was young. If I didn't treat him well, they would've made my life hell. What was I supposed to do?"She covered her face and started sobbing.I watched her without feeling a thing.Maybe she'd been a victim too.But the second she started wanting Poppy hurt, any sympathy I had disappeared.I cut her off."What do you actually want?"Zara clearly hadn't expected me to see right through her.Her face flushed. "Can you lower the amount? I can't pay it."I laughed. "When you moved all my assets, you should've known this day was coming."I want every cent back in my account."Her face fell. She dropped to the floor."Are you re
