Chapter 1

I stood in the morgue, staring at Ruby, who would never open her eyes again. The weight of it crushed my chest until I could barely breathe. She had been so sweet, so full of life. And all I could do was watch her slip away, powerless to save her.The tears came hard and fast, each sob sharp and ragged.A month ago, Ruby was diagnosed with leukemia. My world collapsed in an instant.I had every member of our family tested for a match. Every day waiting for those results was its own kind of hell. The preliminary results came back, and only Dan Pratt was a full match. But the moment he got the news, he packed his bags and started making plans to leave the country.I tried to stop him. I begged him to stay. But while I was busy tending to Ruby at the hospital, he slipped away.Right before his flight took off, he called me."Lynn, listen—this deal is huge. If I close it, we'll never have to worry about money again. Ruby will have access to the best care in the world. I'm doing th

Maybe it was some kind of father-daughter intuition. Dan had been blowing up my phone since yesterday—call after call, text after text.He kept pressing me about Ruby's condition, swearing up and down that he'd come back right away to donate the marrow. But I couldn't even bring myself to look at his messages. I tossed my phone aside and left it there. She was gone. His belated promises were cheaper than the cold air in that morgue. The next morning, I dragged myself to the hospital to make arrangements for Ruby.I barely made it through the front doors when I heard shouting—a familiar voice that made my entire body go rigid.Dan.I looked up and saw him holding Theo tightly in his arms, his face dark with rage. He was laying into a group of nurses and doctors."Theo's leg is injured, and this is the sloppy excuse for care you're giving him? If he ends up with permanent damage, who's going to take responsibility? I want your best doctor, your best room, and the best medication—

The moment the words left my mouth, Dan froze in his tracks. Before he could answer, Valerie came rushing over, her face pale as milk. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she looked at me with an apologetic expression."Lynn, please don't be angry with Dan. He didn't have a choice."Theo's condition is really serious. If he doesn't get those transfusions right away, something terrible could happen."I know this is hard for you, but the children's health has to come first. Please try to understand—don't hold this against him, okay?"She stood there, playing the voice of reason, like she was the one being gracious. Like I was the one making trouble. Before I could say a word, Dan instinctively stepped in front of her, shielding her from me. He reached out and gently patted my head, his voice soft but firm."Come on, Lynn. Enough. Theo needs a full week of transfusions. I have to stay healthy through all of that. So the transplant will have to wait."You and Ruby have always been the re

The moment Dan saw Ruby's corpse, his pupils contracted sharply. She lay there, her tiny face as pale as paper. Her eyes were closed, her chest completely still—not the faintest rise or fall.Dan stumbled back like he'd been burned, his voice trembling."No... that's not possible..."He shook his head, his eyes darting wildly between me and Ruby's cold, lifeless face, desperately denying everything in front of him."Lynn, that's enough."His voice shot up, loud and brittle—the sound of someone trying to convince himself."You're mad that I've been spending time with Valerie and Theo, so you cooked this whole thing up with the hospital to guilt-trip me into coming home?"I stood frozen. I couldn't even cry anymore. Because I'd finally realized: when your heart dies, it doesn't hurt anymore. It just goes cold.Even now, he couldn't accept our daughter's death. He was trying to talk himself out of reality.Dan saw I wasn't responding and latched onto it like a lifeline. He could

I pushed Ruby's gurney, step by step, out of the hospital lobby. The sunlight was blinding, but it carried no warmth against my skin.Dan's shouts faded behind me. His words were nothing more than a ridiculous gust of wind—here one second, gone the next.I didn't look back. Not once.Valerie watched my retreating figure, barely hiding the triumph in her eyes. She tugged gently on Dan's arm, her voice dripping with false sweetness."Dan, don't be upset. Lynn's just angry right now... Once she calms down, she'll come back to you. She needs you, after all."That stoked the last embers of his pride. He scoffed, forcing down the unexplained dread rising in his chest."Yeah, I'm sure she will. No matter how much of a scene she makes, she'll be crawling back in a couple of days."He looked down at Theo in his arms."Come on, buddy. Let's go get you the best dessert in town."Theo giggled and wrapped his arms around Dan's neck."Papa Dan is the best!"A small smile tugged at Dan's

3rd Person POV:Dan dropped Valerie and Theo off at their hotel, giving them a long list of instructions before finally driving home. The whole way, Lynn's calm voice echoed in his head—"Divorce." It stuck in his chest like a splinter he couldn't dig out.He didn't believe it. He refused to believe it.She loved him too much. There was no way she'd just walk away. All he had to do was go home, say a few sweet words, and she'd collapse into his arms, crying and forgiving him. That was the fantasy he clung to as he pushed open the front door. But the house was dark. No warm meal on the table. No Lynn waiting by the door.Even the air felt cold.Dan's heart tightened. He flicked on the light."Lynn?"His voice came out thin and uncertain. He hurried to the study. And there, centered neatly on his desk, were the divorce papers—already signed.Beside them, a small photo of Ruby.In the picture, his little girl was smiling, bright and full of life.Dan stopped cold. Blood rush

Chapter 7

Dan sat in that hotel room until dawn, his tears long dried up.Valerie cowered in the corner, afraid to make a sound. She could see it clearly now—every trace of warmth in Dan's eyes was gone.At daybreak, he shot to his feet and slammed the door behind him.He had to find Lynn. He had to apologize. He had to make this right. But he searched everywhere—every place she could possibly be—and came up empty.Lynn had vanished completely. Not a trace left behind. He called everyone they knew, running through their mutual friends like a madman. Some offered sympathy. Some were cold. Some just tore into him."You didn't save your daughter when you had the chance, and now you're panicking?"Every word hit him like a slap across the face.Meanwhile, Valerie was still clinging to her fantasy of becoming a wealthy socialite. She parked herself and Theo outside the gates of the upscale neighborhood, waiting for Dan to come to his senses. When his car finally appeared, she rushed forwa

Chapter 8

Lynn's POV:Dan's voice cracked and shattered, every shred of his old arrogance ground to dust. "I was wrong... Ruby, Daddy was wrong..."Lynn, you can do whatever you want to me—just don't take away my chance to make this right..."I still didn't turn around. I just kept my hand on Ruby's headstone, tracing her name."Do you know what Ruby's last words were?"Dan went completely silent behind me."She was holding my hand, shaking from the pain, and she was still trying to comfort me."She said, 'Mommy, I don't blame Daddy. He's just really busy...'"She said, 'I really wish Daddy would call me his little Ruby one more time...'"Every word was a blade, sinking deep into Dan's chest.I heard him gasp behind me, clutching at his heart like he couldn't breathe."I... I didn't know then... I thought it was just one more day... I thought I still had time..."Finally, I turned around.I looked at the broken man kneeling before me—hollow, wasted, nothing like the person he used

Chapter 9

One year later, in another beautiful little coastal town.I opened a small flower shop by the sea, naming it "Ruby's Flower House." The shop was filled with blooming flowers, like my reborn life.Every weekend, I'd take a bouquet of Ruby's favorite daisies to the cemetery and spend some time talking to her. Some people urged me to start a new relationship, but I just shook my head gently. I wasn't in a hurry to fall in love, nor did I need to rely on anyone. The peace I had now was already the best redemption.Since Ruby couldn't live on, I decided to see this world for her.…Meanwhile, Valerie ultimately paid a heavy price for her schemes and malice. After Dan completely abandoned her and cut off all financial support, she and Theo hit rock bottom.Unwilling to accept it, she stormed Dan's company and made a scene, only to be dragged out by security. She tried to spread rumors to defame him, but he sued her for defamation instead. With no money and no one to fall back on,
