Chapter 1

Instantly, a barrage of angry curses erupted in the room.“Luanne, aren’t you evil? How could you fake a funeral just to get Greg’s attention?”“When Greg’s family went bankrupt back then, you ran faster than anyone else. Now that he’s made a comeback, you want to crawl your way back to him?”“People like you would honestly be better off actually dead.”The insults pierced my ears like sharp needles. Greg Jenson stood right in front of me, with absolutely no intention of stepping in to help me out.I clenched my fists tightly and forced a fawning smile onto my face.“I’m not here to cling to Greg. Today is his birthday, and I just came to tell him happy birthday. And to say I’m sorry.”Greg let out a disdainful scoff. “Do you honestly think I need your apology?”He raised his eyebrows and wrapped an arm around Chloe Malle, the woman sitting next to him, who also happened to be my former best friend.“Chloe and I are getting married soon,” he said with a playful, mocking smirk.

Chapter 2

Every word that came from Greg felt like a sharp thorn, piercing me until I was riddled with holes.I froze right where I stood, so paralyzed by the sheer agony that I couldn’t even move.“Luanne, back when Greg caught you and Frank in bed together, you lost the right to fake innocence. How do you still have the nerve to stand here and play the victim?”“Greg, don’t go easy on her. Since she’s here to make a scene today, you should settle all the old scores and the new ones with her right now. Show her what happens when she crosses you!”Everyone in the room turned against me. The looks they threw my way made me feel like nothing more than a pile of rotting garbage.Suddenly, a stream of ice-cold red wine poured down over my head. Greg grabbed me by the throat, his eyes bloodshot.“Don’t you love drenching people in red wine? Then let’s make sure you get your fill!” he snarled. “Right now, Chloe is my fiancée. As long as I’m around, I won’t allow anyone to hurt her!”Suddenly de

“There is nothing to say. It is exactly what you see. Greg, I don’t love you anymore.”Greg’s eyes were bloodshot, and he ground his teeth so hard they nearly broke.“Why? Luanne, tell me why, exactly.”I sniffled, forcing myself to look up.“You have absolutely nothing now. Why on earth should I still be blindly devoted to you?”Back then, the sheer disappointment in Greg’s eyes almost burned right through me. The silhouette of his back as he slammed the door and walked away still haunts my mind to this day. Right now, I bit down on the tip of my tongue, bit into my own lip, and used every single ounce of my strength trying to explain. However, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. As it turned out, that person’s words were true. My deal with him was a secret that could never be spoken aloud.Tears streamed down my face like a dam. Looking at the emotions rapidly fading from the depths of Greg’s eyes, I gave a desolate smile.“I can’t answer this question for now. But once I’m de

“Why are you pretending?” Greg cut me off impatiently and, in a fit of irritation, ripped open the top buttons of his shirt.“Luanne, isn’t this what you wanted? To see that I just can’t bring myself to be cruel to you? Well, now you’ve achieved your goal. You should be happy!”He grabbed my hand roughly and pulled me along. By the time we walked out of the hotel, the night was dark.Greg went to fetch his car, leaving me standing next to Chloe on the steps. Looking at the resentment filling her eyes, I thought about it for a moment and decided it was necessary to explain myself.“Chloe, you really don’t need to pull those little stunts. I didn’t come here today to steal Greg from you. Honestly, seeing you two together actually brings me a sense of relief.”My tone was sincere, but Chloe wasn’t buying any of it. She raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face.“Luanne, do you have any idea how much I despise this noble, saintly act of yours? Do you really think I’m going

“It doesn’t matter anymore. Once I’m gone, Chloe will be there to accompany him. That was what I wanted to see anyway.”The voice in my head sounded even more frustrated and disappointed in me. “Don’t you have a mouth? Why don’t you just tell him what happened back then, and what you’ve been going through for the last ten years? I only forbade you from telling him that you’re dead. I never said you couldn’t clear up the misunderstandings from when you were alive!”I simply shook my head and remained silent. After having two vials of blood drawn from me, my body was visibly deteriorating, and even breathing was becoming difficult for me.Over on the hospital bed, Chloe finally opened her eyes. The moment she saw me standing by the door, hatred immediately filled her eyes.“Greg, why are you still keeping her here? I don’t want to see her. Tell her to get out!”Greg didn’t even look at me. He carefully wiped away the bloodstains from Chloe’s forehead and then said in a deep voice

Greg’s hand trembled as he held his phone and stared at the bulletin, reading it over and over again. In the group chat, the friends who had attended his birthday party tonight were blowing it up with curses.[Frank, what kind of sick, fake news are you spreading now? It was bad enough when you posted that funeral hall picture, but you’re now photoshopping an FBI bulletin? Believe me when I say I’ll report you right this second and get you locked up.][Exactly! How is she dead? If we hadn’t just seen Luanne at Greg’s birthday party, I really would have been fooled by you.]The people in the group chat started tagging Greg, clamoring for him to come out and throw a few insults of his own.He shook his head and let out a cold laugh, thinking my tactics really were top-notch. Just moments ago, I had insisted that we go our separate ways, and my sheer determination had almost softened his heart. Yet, before long, I was already resorting to my old tricks just to grab his attention.Th

[Especially you, Greg. If you have the nerve to show up, I promise I will make you cry until you have no tears left to cry anymore!]An inexplicable rage consumed Greg. Who did Frank think he was? Frank had a girlfriend, yet he still hooked up with me. He couldn’t even make me his official girlfriend, so what right did he have to speak up for me in the group chat now?In a fit of anger, Greg clicked into his chat log with me.[Luanne, if you still have it left in you, come out and speak for yourself. What are you doing, hiding away and making Frank your spokesperson? If you keep playing dumb, I will kick both you and Frank out of the group. Posting fake news and spreading rumors every single day is disgusting to watch.]The chat box displayed the notification that the other party was typing. Greg thought to himself that it was exactly as he expected, but in the next second, he froze in his tracks.[Hello, this is the South City Police Station. I am Officer Lee’s colleague. She

“Greg, if we ever meet again, I will apologize to you then.”...Tears streamed down Greg’s jaw and fell onto the yellowed paper, smudging the dark ink into blurry circles. I reached my hand out, but I couldn’t touch his face.“Don’t waste your energy. You’re just a soul right now, and you’re piggybacking on my body. You can’t do a single thing. Luanne, if I hadn’t been so quick-handed, your soul would’ve been gone. Can you please just hurry up and cross over? Stop messing with me, alright?”The Grim Reaper was looking impatient, but I knew he was actually a good guy. Otherwise, after I died, he wouldn’t have seen how deeply obsessed I was and agreed to grant my wish to return to the human world one last time.Greg wiped away his tears. After packing up my belongings, he drove through the night to the funeral home in the neighboring city.Frank, who didn’t expect him to show up, stepped forward and threw a hard punch right at Greg’s face the moment Greg arrived.“Greg, you absol

“Luanne, once I finish what I have to do, I will join you in the afterlife. I promised you that when I made my comeback, I would buy you the most beautiful diamond ring. And you promised me that as soon as you finished your studies, you would marry me.”He shoved that plain silver ring deep into his pocket and strode into the hospital.Inside the hospital ward, Chloe’s condition looked a lot better. Although she was unhappy about Greg throwing a random tantrum the night before, she couldn’t help but feel a rush of joy the moment he reappeared in front of her.She tugged gently on Greg’s sleeve and flirted with him softly, “Greg, where did you go last night? You smashed my phone to pieces, and when I couldn’t get in touch with you, I was worried sick. I thought you were never coming back.”Greg pulled his arm away expressionlessly, his voice dropping to a heavy, dark tone. “I went to find Luanne.”Chloe’s face instantly stiffened.“Then… did you find her?” Her expression was visib

Chloe screamed frantically from the agonizing pain, “You lunatic! Let go of me right now! Help! There’s a lunatic here! Someone call the cops and get him arrested…”Greg scoffed. “The cops? Chloe, I’m taking you to a cop right now. If you can get her to speak up and save you, I’ll let you go. Otherwise, you can wait to bleed out and die!”Clutching her throat, Greg dragged Chloe over to my lifeless body. He squeezed her neck tightly, forcing her to stare directly into my face.“Luanne is a cop! Beg her to save you! Beg her right now!”Chloe’s eyes widened, and she shrieked in absolute disbelief, “Ah! She’s… Ah..!”Greg shook her by the neck, the darkness in his eyes as terrifying as a raging storm.“Come on, beg her! Chloe, beg her right now!”Urine trickled down Chloe’s legs. Her face quickly turned a deep shade of purple, and she could only make desperate, choking noises from her throat.Frank stepped forward and pulled Greg away.“Enough! Luanne is dead. Even if you kill he
