Chapter 1

Oliver's POVI drove without saying a word. The silence inside the car was suffocating.Cara Hartley finally spoke up. "Oliver, it's really not what you think. Dominic and I just run a social media account together. We film a video every now and then. That's all."I let out a flat hum and went quiet again. She grabbed my hand and pressed it against herself, urging me to hit her. "Smack me, scream at me—I don't care. Just please don't go silent on me like this."I slammed the brakes. The car jerked to the side of the road.Dominic Vale, sitting in the back seat, broke the silence. "What exactly do you want him to say? We're all adults. Everyone knows what's going on."He met my bloodshot eyes in the rearview mirror."We all nearly died today, so we might as well be honest. She and I have been sleeping together for a while."The day your dad passed away and you flew home for the funeral, we did it in your bed. We even made a mess of the sheets. You washed them yourself when you

Chapter 2

Oliver's POVSure enough, Cara saw the message and left. She never came back.I opened the social media account she and Dominic ran together as a couple. Every single post had a supportive comment from me underneath it. They'd traveled the world together and seen places I never had.Dominic used to tease me about it. "Jealous? Get your CEO wife to take you."He knew full well that Cara had turned me down at least ten times. "There's so much going on at the company, Oliver. Can you think about my schedule for once?"She was never busy. She just gave all her free time to Dominic. What looked like him showing off their adventures was really him rubbing it in my face.I was still staring at the screen when a new video appeared on their page, set so that only I could see it.The sheets were tangled, toys were scattered across the bed, and Dominic's muscular back was arched over Cara as he pinned her beneath him, taking what he wanted without a shred of restraint."Feels better with

Chapter 3

Oliver's POV"Oliver, what are you doing?"Cara glanced around at the clothes strewn everywhere and the dark circles under my eyes, and a flicker of panic crossed her face."Nothing. I just feel like getting out for a while."She seemed to relax at that and crouched down in front of me. "I knew you wouldn't shut me out for long. Honey, once I free up some time, I'll take you on a trip."Oh, and come to the company banquet tomorrow. We all nearly died on that flight, so it's worth celebrating."I thought about it for a long time before I finally agreed. It would be my way of closing the book on this pathetic marriage and this pathetic friendship. At the banquet, Dominic was working the room with a bottle in one hand and Cara's wrist locked in the other, dragging her along from table to table. It looked exactly like the night Cara and I made the rounds at our own wedding.Every mocking, pitying glance in the room landed on me."A near-fatal plane crash, and what comes out of it?

Chapter 4

Oliver's POVIn college, they stripped me naked, poured urine on me, and forced me to my knees to bark like a dog.Cara was the first one there. She got hit with bottles and had three tendons torn in her hand just getting them off me. She then wiped my tears away with her crooked fingers."It's over. No one's ever going to bring it up again."It took me three full years to claw my way out of that darkness.I looked up in disbelief. "How would Dominic even know about that?"Cara couldn't meet my eyes. Dominic walked over to me."She told me one night in bed, like a little bedtime story."The blood in my veins went cold. The worst thing that ever happened to me, the pain I'd carry for the rest of my life, was just a story Cara used to keep him entertained.I stared at her, my eyes burning. She looked away.Dominic pointed at the group of men and put on his best righteous act. "But as your best friend, I figured I should help you get some closure. These lowlifes owe you an apolo

Third-Person POV"Oliver…"The carpet inside the private room was soaked through with blood, and there were signs of a struggle everywhere. The men were gone, and so was Oliver.Cara's heart lurched and she tore through every partition in the room, but there was no sign of him. Her composure was slipping fast as she pulled out her phone and dialed his number. He didn't pick up. The same cold, automated voice played over and over, grinding away at what was left of her patience."Someone get in here!"A server rushed in and froze at the sight of the room. "Oh my god.""What happened in here? Where is the man who was in this room?" Cara's eyes were already red."Ms. Hartley, I… I honestly don't know. I'll call the police right away."Cara didn't have the patience to wait for answers. She was about to bolt out and search herself when Dominic came hurrying in, looking just as stunned."How did this happen? Oliver… Did he—"For the first time, Cara lost her temper with him. "You'r

Third-Person POV"What did you just say?" Cara's voice shot up."Ms. Hartley, please, I'm just passing along what the server up there told people. I don't know if it's true."Cara thought about the state of that room again, and a chill crawled down her spine. "I'm heading there now. And I need you to look into something for me. Find out how Linda died."She hung up and drove back to the venue as fast as she could. In the lobby, the floor manager was tearing into one of the servers, who stood there wiping away tears, clearly shaken to the core."That's Ms. Hartley's husband. Whatever you saw, you're going to tell the police every detail."Cara walked up and softened her tone as much as she could manage. "Tell me what you saw.""I… I saw those men make your husband drink urine. They took photos, lots of them, and shared them everywhere. They told me not to say anything." The server's voice cracked."And then later, I saw him cut his wrist.""What?" Cara's eyes went wide, and sh

Chapter 7

Oliver's POVThe moment the porcelain shard bit into my wrist, everything in my head turned to static. In that one brief second, I said goodbye to my marriage and to a friendship I'd spent years protecting. Maybe I should have seen the double betrayal coming a long time ago. Waiting until now only made the despair that much worse.Just as I was ready to let go, the door to the private room was kicked open. A familiar figure burst in, pulled me into her arms, and screamed, "Why would you do this? You are not allowed to die on me!"I didn't have the strength to see who it was or to answer. I blacked out. When I opened my eyes and saw Harper Winslow sitting at my bedside, I wasn't surprised. She once told me that if Cara ever betrayed me, she would be the first one there to take me away. She'd kept her word. She had already seen the couple's videos Cara and Dominic had posted together."Really touching stuff," she said flatly. "Reaching for her lover's hand with her dying breath. W

Chapter 8

Oliver's POVCara stared at me in shock. At the same moment, Dominic stepped between us. "Oliver, if you want to hit someone, hit me. Don't blame her. I'm the one who got your mom killed. I'm the one who caused all of this."He squared his jaw and turned his face toward me. "Go ahead."I just looked at him, wondering how this open, easygoing face had become the thing that haunted me. Then I laughed."Are you two done with the little performance?"Cara shoved him aside without a second thought and came back to me. "Oliver, please don't misunderstand. I see him for what he really is now. I hate him more than you do, and I will never go near him again. I already terminated the pregnancy."I came here to take you home."Her eyes were full of hope. She was so sure that I'd pull her into my arms the way I always did and forgive her without conditions. But that version of me was gone.I looked her straight in the eye and smiled, cold and mocking. "Cara, there is nothing left between
