Chapter 1

“Ms. Wright, are you sure you want to sell this place at half the going rate?” the real estate agent asked in disbelief. After all, properties in this location were in high demand. No one would sell at such a low price. Not to mention, the renovation was fully complete, and it was ready for move-in.“I’m sure,” I said without any hesitation.I had designed the floor plan myself; I had handled every detail of the decor, chosen the paint color down to the last shade, and picked out every piece of furniture as well.My fiance, Austin, had never asked or cared. All he ever said was, “Just do whatever you think is right.”I just realized that my hard work had become half of someone else’s home during the final inspection. To accommodate my best friend, Laurel, he had even shrunk my bedroom to half its size.He had also demolished the walk-in closet I had spent over half a month planning. In that case, this home no longer needed to exist.“Who are you texting?”Austin leaned in t

Austin was stunned when he heard my words. He smiled down at me, like I was a toddler throwing an unreasonable tantrum.“She’s your best friend. Are you seriously getting jealous over this?“I just think of her as your family, so I’m being a little extra considerate. That’s all.”He patted my head and said, like he had done countless times before, “Okay, stop making a scene.”My mind flashed back to the past.Laurel’s family had pressured her to get married. So, she asked him to accompany her to her hometown and act as her boyfriend for a week.Another time, she got lost during a hike. He abandoned me on the highway without hesitation and drove off to find her. I clung to the car door and begged him desperately. He only gave me a cold stare. “Laurel is in trouble right now. I have to go. Stop making a scene.”My thoughts returned to the present. I watched him pick up a shrimp and place it into my bowl once again. My appetite vanished completely. “I’m not eating anymore.”“Grac

The next morning, Austin surprisingly did not leave early for work.Instead, he set breakfast on the table and pulled out a chair for me.“Grace, come have breakfast.”He flashed me that familiar smile, the one that always came right before he let me down. He always softened me up first before abandoning me.“I have last-minute overtime tonight. I may not be able to make your birthday.“Why don’t I make it up to you this weekend? I’ll get you whatever you want.”Whatever I want. That was his way of saying he had put zero thought into my birthday. He did not even bother to get me a bouquet.Yet, when Laurel’s birthday was around the corner, he put in more effort than I did. He scouted restaurants and even asked me to pry into what she wanted. When I voiced my discontent, he never took it seriously.“Hey, as your fiance, I can’t look like a total slacker in front of your best friend!“If I’m good to her, she won’t be in your ear telling you to dump me whenever we argue.”B

I said nothing. I simply packed up the cake and walked away. After I had gone just three feet, Austin caught up and grabbed my arm. “Grace, it’s not what you think,” he said.“She was about to fall. I just reached out to catch her.”I looked up at him and coldly replied, “Catch her right into your arms?”Austin froze for a moment. He was about to say something else, but I cut him off first.“You sure pay a lot of attention to Laurel. You notice every little thing she does.“Remember when we went for a walk in the park last time? You were glued to your phone the entire time. You didn’t even notice when I slipped on some moss.”His face turned pale when he recalled it.“I scraped my knees so badly, and they hurt so much that I couldn’t even make a sound.“You had no idea until you were thirteen feet away and realized I wasn’t walking behind you anymore.”“I was busy with work on my phone at that time!” he tried to explain helplessly.I laughed in exasperation as I shifted my

“What did you just say?”Austin thought he had misheard. The boutique staff was helpless, and she had to repeat herself, “Ms. Wright said the wedding is off, so she returned the dress, Mr. Jibson.”Austin froze. He was stunned for a good ten seconds before he finally registered what she had said.“That’s not possible.” His voice came out hoarse.“She told me this morning she was going to exchange it. How could she—”Halfway through, he recalled what I had said to him, “No. The wedding’s off.”He had not listened carefully at the time and just brushed me off.Austin’s breathing began to grow heavier. He hung up and dialed my number.“The number you have dialed is not in service.”He did not believe it and dialed again. He got the same reply. Austin then frantically opened WhatsApp. Our pinned chat was still there. He hurriedly typed, [Grace, where are you?]A single gray check mark appeared when he hit send. He had been blocked.Austin stared at the mark, and his h

Just then, his phone rang. He looked up with eager anticipation. However, when he realized it was Laurel calling, he just stared at the flashing screen. After the call ended, it rang again. He finally picked it up when Laurel called for the fifth time.“Austin, is Gracie home? I’ve been trying to call her, but it keeps going straight to voicemail.”“She’s not here.”“Not there? Where did she go?”Austin did not respond.Laurel sensed that something was off, and her voice grew cautious as she asked, “Did you two... fight?”“No.”“Then…?”“She’s gone.”“She’s gone? Gone where?”“I don’t know.”Austin kept calm, but there was a hint of frustration in his voice.“She returned the wedding dress, called off the wedding, and put the new house up for sale.“She blocked me on everything. I don’t even have a way to reach her.”There was silence on the other end of the line. After a long while, Laurel finally spoke. “Austin, don’t panic. I’ll help you find her.”“Don’t bot

The sky was still dark when Austin arrived. He stood downstairs outside my place and looked up at that familiar window. His heart began to pound fiercely, and he stood there for a long time.He waited until dawn broke and the people in the neighborhood started leaving for work.Only then did he dare to go up and ring the doorbell. My mother opened the door. The moment she saw him, her expression turned cold.“Mrs. Wright, I’m here to see Grace.”“She’s not here.”“Then, where is she...?”“She doesn’t want to see you.”She then calmly added, “Gracie told me everything. I know all about what you did.“She doesn’t want to see you right now, so leave.”Austin grew anxious.“Please, just let me see her once.”“I have something to tell her. I—”My mother cut him off and said, “You left my daughter alone in that house for another woman.“You made her return her dress, cancel the wedding, and sell the home you two bought.“You made her take the train back here by herself. After that day, he waited downstairs every day.He stood there from morning until night, rain or shine. The neighbors all recognized him. They whispered behind his back, “Who’s that guy? He’s just standing down there every day.”“I heard he’s the Wrights’ daughter’s ex-boyfriend. He broke her heart, and now, he’s trying to get her back.”“Tsk, it serves him right. Where was all this effort before?”Austin heard them but did not argue. He just stood there and let everyone stare at him. He would look down and say, “I deserve this. I’m the one who wronged Grace.”On the fifteenth day, it rained heavily. He had no umbrella, so he stood right in the rain. He was soaked through, with water streaming down his faceIt was impossible to tell if it was rain or tears. My mother saw him from the window and sighed.“Gracie, he’s still out there getting soaked.”I was flipping through a book on the couch.Without looking up, I said, “Let him.“What if he gets sick—”“That’s on hi

One month later, the new house was sold. The buyers were a young couple who had just gotten married. They had been looking at properties everywhere. When they saw this place, they could not believe how cheap it was.The agent said the seller was in a hurry, so the price was reduced. They did not ask further questions and signed the contract. When Austin went to handle the transfer procedures, he stood inside the house and looked around for a long time.A decorative painting he had nailed up still hung on the wall.He did not take it down. The couple asked if he wanted it back, but he said no.It would be useless to keep it anyway. After finishing the procedures, he stood at the entrance and glanced back once. Our home was gone forever.Just then, he recalled when we first bought the house, he had asked me, “Grace, what kind of place are you dreaming of?”I said I wanted a walk-in closet and large windows that let the sunlight shine through. He said okay. After that, to

Three years passed.I stood on the balcony of my new home and looked out at the distant sea.The sunlight here was wonderful, and it felt warm on my skin.I was wearing a white dress, and my hair had grown much longer. It fell loosely over my shoulders.I was also wearing a bracelet that my mother had bought me as a New Year’s gift.“Grace, food’s ready!” My mother called from inside the house.“Coming!” I replied with a smile before walking inside. There were mashed potatoes, brisket, and a bowl of creamy tomato soup on the dining table. My father sat at the table and dished the food out for me.“Eat more. You’re too skinny.”“Dad, I’m not skinny. I actually gained two pounds.”“Good. A little weight looks better on you.”I laughed, took the plate, and stuffed a piece of brisket into my mouth. My mother gave me a pat and helplessly said, “Slow down. Nobody’s going to take it from you.“We made all of this for you.”We talked and laughed as we ate.Sunlight shone throug
