Chapter 1

"Look at this official seal! Look at this layout! This is cutting-edge technology!" Rick Gould barked, jabbing his finger at his phone screen as flecks of spit flew into my face."Don't look a gift horse in the mouth! Do you have any idea how many connections I had to pull to get the AI to approve your slot?"I stared at the shredded remnants of my employment contract scattered across the floor. That contract was the product of three grueling months of hard work and five intense rounds of interviews with a prominent company."Dad, please wake up," I said, crouching down to try and piece the torn paper back together. "That is just a generative AI. It only outputs what you tell it to. If you asked it to make you President of the United States, it would happily give you an official White House appointment letter.""What the hell?" Rick kicked the scraps of paper out of my hands. "You stupid girl! Did you go to college just to lose whatever brain cells you had left?"Mr. Miller and Mr

The bedroom fell into a dead silence.Leaning against the cold wood of the door, I could clearly hear Rick's and Evelyn's laughter echoing from the living room."When that luxury penthouse gets handed over, whose name is going on the deed?" Evelyn asked."Simone's, obviously!" Rick replied without a second thought. "Sandra's going to marry into another family sooner or later. You think I'm going to let her take a prime piece of real estate with her?""Exactly. You always think ahead. But what about that $100,000 base salary..." Evelyn probed."Her paycheck goes straight to me!" Rick said smugly. "A young girl has no business holding that kind of cash."I closed my eyes to mask my mockery. This was my wonderful dad.Whenever money or interests were on the line, he always unhesitatingly sided with my stepmother and half-brother. Even this absurd corporate title was nothing more than a new tool for him to bleed me dry.I walked over to my desk and flipped open my laptop. Thankfull

Every eye in the lobby instantly snapped onto me. The crowd of fanatical middle-aged and elderly marks stared at me as if I were some kind of degenerate alien."Kids these days are so ungrateful.""Her parents literally paved a golden path for her, and she's still clutching her wallet over a measly deposit."...Evelyn seized the opportunity to fan the flames. "Sandra, that settlement money is just sitting in the bank collecting dust anyway. If you use it for the equity subscription, you'll make it all back in a single month. How can you be so blind to math?"Simone joined in, whining loudly, "Hurry up and pay the money! I'm still waiting to ride in my brand-new Porsche!"The sight of their greedy, twisted faces made my stomach churn. The life insurance and compensation payout from my mother's fatal car accident totaled 600,000 dollars. For years, Rick had tried every underhanded trick in the book to swindle it away from me, but I had guarded that bankbook fiercely, never touch

I looked at Rick's face, twisted with manic greed, and found the entire situation absurd."Fine," I said, smoothing down my rumpled collar and standing up straight. "Since you all want to be corporate presidents so badly, I'll happily step aside and fulfill your wish."Rick paused, shocked by how easily I had caved.Evelyn looked at me with deep suspicion. "What underhanded trick are you pulling now?""No tricks," I replied, casually dusting off my clothes. "The bankbook is tucked right under my mattress in my bedroom. The password is my mother's birthday. Go fetch it yourselves."Rick's face lit up with wild ecstasy, and he immediately shoved Evelyn's shoulder. "Hurry! Take Simone and catch a cab back to the house right now."Evelyn grabbed Simone's arm, her face splitting into a gleeful grin as she rushed out. "Oh, my goodness! My son is going to be a corporate president!"I watched them leave with a cold smirk....Tony lifted his megaphone, eagerly seizing the moment to br

After a pause, Rick looked down at the bankbook in his hands and flipped it open.[Account Holder: Rick Gould.]Evelyn let out a piercing scream. "No, this isn't Sandra's bank book! This is your pension account!"Rick's face drained of color. "What? How is this possible?"I crossed my arms, thoroughly enjoying the spectacle of their worlds collapsing."My mother's compensation money?" I said with a smirk. "I transferred that out of that account a long time ago. The bankbook hidden under my mattress was the secret stash you've been hiding from Evelyn all these years."I looked him dead in the eye, enunciating, "Congratulations, Dad. You just used your retirement savings to buy a fictional presidency from a scam ring.""You ungrateful parasite!" Rick roared, his eyes turning a feral crimson as he lunged at me. "Give me my money back! That's my life savings!"I took a clean step to the side, and his momentum sent him crashing onto the hard floor."Give it back?" I looked down at

The mediation room at the police station was oppressively heavy.Rick sat with his hair a mess, looking like he had aged ten years overnight. Evelyn sat next to him, wiping her tears nonstop."Officer, that was all our family savings," she sobbed. "How are we supposed to live now?"The young officer taking notes sighed. "The funds were immediately moved to an offshore account. It's going to be very hard to get them back. Go home and wait for updates."Rick snapped his head up, staring at me with pure hatred."It was you!" He lunged to his feet, pointing a finger at me. "You set me up! You knew that the bankbook was mine, and you didn't say a word!"I remained detached. "Didn't I? At the hotel, how many times did I tell you it was a scam? You were just too blinded by greed to listen. You insisted on using your retirement money to buy a fake title.""Bullshit!" Rick raised his hand to slap me."Sit down!" the officer barked. "This is a police station. You dare touch her here?"R

In the days that followed, my phone was unusually quiet. There were no more angry rants from Rick and no more emotional blackmail from Evelyn. But I knew things wouldn't end so smoothly.Sure enough, when I got off work on Friday, I saw Simone waiting downstairs. He was wearing a wrinkled T-shirt, his hair a matted mess. The arrogance he usually carried was gone. The moment he saw me, he lunged forward and grabbed my leg, sobbing hysterically. "Sandra, please save me!"The limited-edition sneakers he used to flaunt were caked in mud, and his fingernails were black with dirt. He looked like he had been living on the streets."The loan sharks took over the house," he wailed. "Mom took the bankbook and ran, and Dad broke his leg. He's lying in the hospital right now."I frowned and forcefully pulled my leg back. "Evelyn ran away?""Yes!" Simone nodded frantically. "Those men showed up with knives and terrified her. She waited until Dad wasn't looking, packed up all the cash and val

I pushed open the door to the hospital room.Rick lay there emaciated, his face sallow and his cheekbones protruding sharply. His right leg was encased in a heavy plaster cast, suspended in the air. When he saw me, a desperate glint of hope flickered in his dull eyes."Sandra... you're here..." He weakly reached out a trembling hand.I stood perfectly still. Before he could touch me, a woman holding a phone lunged out from the corner of the room. Her lanyard read: [Gold Medal Conflict Mediator]."Look, everyone! This is Rick Gould's biological daughter!" she shrilled into the camera lens, shoving it directly into my face. "Her dad is crippled, broke, and homeless. Meanwhile, she pulls in a five-figure monthly salary but wants to cut ties and leave him to die!"The livestream chat instantly exploded with vitriol.[How heartless! She won't even acknowledge her dad?][What right does an ingrate like this have to live?]...Rick played along right on cue, wailing piteously. "Sand

A refreshing breeze hit me the moment I walked through the hospital gates. The crisp, cool air of early autumn chased away the lingering stench of disinfectant, and I stopped to take a deep breath. The massive stone that had weighed on my chest for over 20 years had finally shattered. The suffocating emotional blackmail and endless demands were cut clean.Right then, my phone buzzed. It was the company's HR manager."Sandra, congratulations. You've passed your probation. Come by tomorrow morning to sign your official employment contract."I looked up at the clear blue sky. "Thank you so much. I'll be there."Hanging up, I couldn't help but smile. Sure, there was no mythical $100,000 monthly salary or a luxury penthouse, but I was starting a life that belonged entirely to me.I no longer had to pay for other people's stupidity and greed. Every dollar I earned honestly would be a brick to build my own future....A few months later, I earned a promotion, a raise, and moved into
