Chapter 1

The conference room was so quiet I could hear the air-conditioning hum. Wendy Sutton seemed oblivious as she held her teacup and gave it a quiet blow. "Ryan is handsome and charming. If you can get a playboy like him to settle down, it'll be your greatest achievement as a woman."I said nothing as I raised an eyebrow. Wendy set down her cup with a sharp clink. "Cheshire, you're already 28." Contempt flashed in her eyes. "At your age, you're already scraping the bottom of the dating pool, and I heard you've had two relationships. That doesn't just make you undesirable. It makes you used goods. But don't worry. For the Shaw family's sake, the Lanes will still hold their noses and take you." My personal assistant Robin shot to her feet, her face red. "How dare you..." I raised my hand to stop her. Wendy must have mistaken my silence for weakness because she grew even more smug. She turned to Joey, her voice softening. "Joey, you're too kind. You treat Cheshire like a sister,

Wendy's face slowly turned red with rage as she realized I was ignoring her. I did not give her a chance to speak as I stood up, "Alright. If there's nothing else, the meeting is adjourned." Everyone stood up at once and gathered their things as if fleeing a disaster. "Nobody moves!" Wendy slammed her palm on the table before pointing at my face. "Cheshire, you need to know your place! Joey hasn't said anything yet! What gives you the right to end the meeting?!" She turned to Joey and gave him a gentle shove. "Joey, show them you're the chairman." Joey looked as if someone had put a knife to his throat. Trembling, he walked over with his voice shaking as if he were about to cry. "Cheshire... I'm sorry..." Wendy looked as though she had been humiliated. She grabbed Joey's arm and raised her voice. "Why are you apologizing to her?! You're the heir to Shaw Group! Why are you afraid of one woman?" Joey pulled his arm from her grip. "Shut up!" He roared the words, then caref

The moment Ryan saw me, his drunken eyes immediately cleared. He grabbed his jacket and pulled it tightly around himself. "Ms. Shaw..." He turned around and pulled the door, but someone had already locked it from the outside. Ryan's face went pale as he backed into the corner farthest from me, nearly in tears. "Ms. Shaw, you're a good person. You'd never do anything to me, right?" I stared at him, speechless. I took out my phone and called the hotel manager. Footsteps and voices suddenly sounded outside the door. A second later, the door flew open. Wendy rushed in and started shouting before she had even looked around. "Cheshire! How can you be so shameless? Sleeping with a man at your mother's birthday party?!" A group of guests crowded in behind her and peered inside. "I know you've tried everything to marry into the Lane family, but you shouldn't fool around at your mother's birthday party," Wendy continued. Malicious excitement gleamed in her eyes as she lunged fo

It was at that moment that Wendy finally seemed to understand. "I understand now, Mrs. Lane. You're only doing this out of respect for the Shaw family…." Wendy straightened her back and spoke as if she were in charge. "As the Shaw family's future daughter-in-law, I'll make the decision today on behalf of the Lane family. From now on, Cheshire is yours to discipline as you see fit. You can do whatever you want as long as she stays alive. The Shaw family won't interfere." The people nearby stared at her as if she were insane. They slowly backed away, worried she might drag them down with her. Mrs. Lane's expression darkened further as she quickly apologized to me, "Ms. Shaw, we would never. Whatever happened today was all a terrible misunderstanding..." Everyone in the crowd started murmuring when my parents came near, with Joey acting like a scaredy-cat behind them. "What's going on? Why is everyone gathered here?" Wendy's eyes lit up. She hurried over, her voice sweet and bri

Wendy stood frozen on the spot. She could hardly believe what she had just heard, and her eyes went wide. She opened her mouth, and an angry roar echoed in the lounge. "Impossible! Forty-three percent?!" She turned around and grabbed Joey's arm, digging her nails into him through his shirt. "Joey, tell me this isn't true! You're the Shaw family's only son! Why should a worthless woman like her own forty-three percent?! Are you and your parents lying to me? Say something!" Joey yanked his arm free for once as Wendy stumbled back two steps, then she rushed toward my father. "Richard, you must be losing your mind. How could a woman be the heir? Joey is your biological son. You can't be this stupid! "Cheshire must have tricked you into giving her those shares. I'll find you a lawyer. I'll help you sue her and get them back. I know people at a law firm, and my mother's cousin handles business lawsuits..." My father did not even look at her as he turned to his personal assistant. "

Joey took his phone out of his pocket. "Last March, you said you wanted to open a cafe, so I transferred forty thousand dollars to you. The cafe closed in less than two months, and you came crying to me because you owed your suppliers money. I transferred another fifteen thousand dollars then. For your birthday in May, you asked for the sapphire necklace from the boutique at Grand Plaza. I paid thirty-four thousand eight hundred dollars without a word. In July, you said your mother needed surgery, so I transferred another twenty thousand dollars..." "You gave me all of that willingly!" Wendy cut him off with a scream. "Isn't it normal to spend money on your girlfriend? What's wrong with a man spending money on the woman he's dating?!" Joey ignored her and kept reading. "In August, you said you wanted to enroll in an Executive MBA program to improve yourself, so I paid twenty-six thousand dollars in tuition. You attended three classes and never went back." He scrolled down and c

Chapter 7

The statement from Shaw Group's legal department was cold and blunt. First of all, Ms. Wendy Sutton had no legal relationship with Shaw Group. Her claim that she was the Shaw family's future daughter-in-law was a complete fiction. Secondly, Ms. Cheshire Shaw, the company's chairwoman, owned forty-three percent of Shaw Group and was its sole controlling shareholder. There was no inheritance dispute, and Mr. Joey Shaw had never held a management position at the company. Finally, the company would sue Ms. Wendy Sutton for making false accusations and seek two hundred thousand dollars in damages for harming Ms. Cheshire Shaw's reputation and the Shaw Group's business interests. A scanned legal notice bearing an official seal was attached to the statement. The comments stopped almost immediately. The people who had rushed to defend Wendy deleted their posts and comments faster than anyone else. The legal department handled everything, and none of it needed my attention, so I tre

Chapter 8

Wendy was assigned to the prison laundry. Every day, she loaded piles of prison uniforms into industrial washers and spent eight hours surrounded by steam and the smell of bleach. The detergent soon hurt the skin on her hands. Her fingertips cracked, making it painful whenever they touched water. At first, the other women in her cell tried to speak to her. Then, they realized she spent every night lying awake and repeating the same few lines. "Why?" "It's all her fault." "Without her, I'd be the Shaw family's daughter-in-law now." After that, no one paid any more attention to her. An older woman serving time for fraud eventually grew so tired of Wendy's muttering that she rolled over and shouted, "All you talk about is being the Shaw family's daughter-in-law. Do they even know you? The judgment said unlawful entry, disorderly conduct, and assault with a weapon! Which of those made you their daughter-in-law?" Wendy fell silent. She curled beneath her blanket and bit down
