Wendy was assigned to the prison laundry. Every day, she loaded piles of prison uniforms into industrial washers and spent eight hours surrounded by steam and the smell of bleach. The detergent soon hurt the skin on her hands. Her fingertips cracked, making it painful whenever they touched water. At first, the other women in her cell tried to speak to her.
