Lahat ng Kabanata ng Marked, Not Kept: Kabanata 21 - Kabanata 30

"In that exact chair," Crane said again, like she might not have heard him.Maya didn't move.Every instinct she had was screaming at her to ask. Nineteen years of one question sitting in her chest like a stone, and this man had the answer in his cardigan pocket, and he was holding it out, and he wanted her to reach.Dane's yes was never worth the air it took.Neither was this one.He wanted her to ask. That was the whole point of saying it twice. A man doesn't repeat himself unless he's waiting for you to open your mouth."You're stalling," Maya said. Her own voice surprised her. Flat. Bored, almost. Six years of telling drunks the kitchen was closed.Something flickered behind the reading glasses. Just a flicker. But she'd waited on four hundred men like him, and she knew exactly what it looked like when somebody's script stopped working."I'm negotiating," Crane said."You're stalling. You've got eleven men and we've got thirty and you're still talking." She took a step. "Which mea

Grass. Cold. Wet.That was the first thing. Not thoughts. Just the world coming back in the order the world comes in: grass under her cheek, cold on her skin, wet soaking through everywhere she touched the ground. Then light. Grey. Not moonlight anymore. Then a hand on her back."Easy," Wilder said. "Easy. Slow."Maya opened her eyes. She was face-down in a field in the dark, naked as the day she was born, and her whole body felt like it had been taken apart and put back together by someone who'd done it right. No pain. Not one ache. She hadn't felt this good in her life. Not once, not ever, not at twenty-two before everything, not as a kid. Every part of her was working. Her back didn't hurt. Her feet didn't hurt. She'd been running on four hours' sleep and diner coffee for six years and she had never once, in twenty-eight years, felt like this. That was the most frightening thing that had ever happened to her."How long," she said. Her voice worked. That surprised her."Four hours."

Twenty-nine elders came. They took the mill yard like a weather front, out of six cars and a van, old men and old women in coats that didn't match, and every one of them stopped dead the second they got close enough to smell what was standing in the grass.Maya watched it happen twenty-nine times. The walk breaking. The head coming down. That fractional stagger, like a person stepping off a kerb they hadn't seen. Two of them made it all the way. The rest didn't.One old man stopped forty feet out, put a hand on the bonnet of a car, and stayed there for the rest of the morning. Nobody helped him. Nobody mentioned it."Stop it," Wilder said, low, beside her."I'm not doing anything.""I know." He put his hand flat between her shoulder blades, and she felt the pack-sense in her settle a half-step, the way water settles when you take your hand out of it. "That's the problem."They set up in the yard because nobody wanted to go back down those stairs. Somebody dragged pallets over for the

There were five blankets by the trucks.Kade found it. He'd been counting heads all morning because that was the only job left he could do one-handed, and he came back across the yard with his face doing something Maya didn't like."Boss," he said. Then, to Sloane, correcting himself, and neither of them enjoyed it. "Alpha. We're one short.""Which one.""The kid."Maya was already moving.Second from the end. The boy who'd stood up too fast when her shadow crossed the glass, mouth working, no sound getting through. She'd put him in her head like a shopping list in a corridor two days ago and she'd carried him up four flights of stairs herself. His blanket was folded. That was the thing that got her. Not dropped, not kicked off in a panic.Folded, and squared up, and left on the wheel arch. You don't fold a blanket in a panic. You fold a blanket when you've decided something and you've got time."Eli," Ilsa said. She was propped against the same truck, grey and wrung out, but her eyes

They left at four in the morning because Sloane said leaving in daylight was for people with permission, and Cascade didn't have any to give. The truck was Kade's, which was the first argument. Kade wanted to drive it, which was the second, and he lost that one in about nine seconds because he still couldn't lift his left arm above his ribs and everybody in the yard had watched him try."Then take it," he said, and threw the keys underhand at Wilder, and turned away too fast. "It pulls left past sixty. Tank's full. There's a jack under the back seat and it's the wrong one for those wheels, so don't get a flat." A pause. "Don't let the kid drive.""I can drive," Eli said."You're eighteen and you've been in a concrete box since June. You can sit in the back and eat crisps."Eli sat in the back and ate crisps. Maya watched him get through two bags before they'd left the property and decided not to say anything about it, ever.Maya said her goodbyes in the wrong order and she'd think abou
