Herded

Four sets of headlights, and none of them closing. That was the thing Maya kept coming back to afterward, when there was time to come back to things. They came over the rise doing eighty and they sat at eighty, four across two lanes, a quarter mile back, and they stayed there."They're not gaining," she said."No." Wilder had both hands on the wheel and the truck up to seventy-five and Kade's warning about sixty was already a joke. "They're not.""Is that good?""No."Eli had turned round on the back seat and was up on his knees looking through the rear window with his hood down, and there was something terribly calm about him."Two vans and two saloons," he said. "The vans are the ones that matter. Saloons are for people.""Meaning what?""Meaning they brought crates."Maya thought about a corridor with nine doors in it and had to look at the road for a bit.The road did what that road does, which is climb and bend and give you nothing, and for six miles nothing changed at all. Then t

Eight Hours

"Right," Eli said. "Look at Wilder.""He's driving.""That's why. He can't fall over."They were eighty miles south of the junction with three sets of headlights holding station behind them and the sun coming up ugly and orange over flat brown country, and Maya was getting a lesson in something no wolf had been taught in four hundred years, from an eighteen-year-old in a jacket three sizes too big, with his knees up on the back seat."Okay. So." Eli leaned forward between the seats. "What you did in the yard, that's the easy one. That's just letting go. Any of us can do that at about six years old and it's the first thing they teach you not to do, because it tells every single person in a mile radius exactly what you are." He tapped the back of the seat. "The hard one is picking.""I picked. I picked the car.""You picked a car. That's like aiming a hose at a house." He shook his head. "You want one person. Not the vehicle, not the group, not the road. One head. You have to actually fi

Room Fourteen

The motel had eighteen rooms and a sign with two letters out, and it sat on the north edge of Winnemucca where the town gives up.They got there at twenty past seven with the light going and the desert behind it turning the colour of a bruise. The three cars did not follow them in. They went past the entrance, all three, at the same speed they'd held for four hundred miles, and carried on south into town, and Maya watched them go and felt worse than she had all day."They don't need to sit on us anymore," Wilder said. "We're where he wants us."Eli had his forehead against the window. "Yeah, but why here.""Because she's here," Maya said. She was already opening the door. "Or she was."She'd known it for the last thirty miles and hadn't said it out loud, because saying it out loud would make it a thing that could be wrong. They tried three motels before this one, and this one was the fourth, and Maya knew before the man behind the counter had finished shaking his head. There was a smel

Through The Wall

Nobody sells a car at nine at night in Winnemucca.Eli bought one anyway. He walked into the bar next to the motel with two hundred dollars of Kade's money and came out forty minutes later with the keys to a 1994 Bronco and the phone number of a man called Duane, and he was very smug about it for about six miles."You just walked in and asked?""I asked who was drinking and who'd stopped." He shrugged. "Man who's stopped drinking at nine on a Friday is a man who needs to be somewhere in the morning. Man like that will sell you his second car."Wilder glanced at him in the mirror. "Where did you learn that?""Six to eighteen." Eli put his feet up. "You pick things up."They left Kade's truck in the motel lot with the keys in it, which hurt, and they went out of Winnemucca at half nine on a service road going the wrong direction entirely.Nobody followed them. That was the point.Three cars were sitting on the 95 south watching for a red pickup with Oregon plates, and a brown Bronco full

The Dry Lake

The dry lake was white. That was what nobody had told her. Maya had been picturing a cracked brown pan out of a film, and what was actually down there in the early light was six miles of flat white nothing, so flat it went wrong at the edges, so bright it hurt to look at by seven in the morning. They came up on the ridge above it at ten past six, stopped the Bronco behind a fold of rock, lay down on their stomachs in the dirt, and waited. The ground was still cold. By eight it would be forty degrees and by noon it would be a griddle, and Maya knew all of that and none of it mattered.Ilsa lay between them with a coat rolled under her chest. She had refused, comprehensively and with language, to be left at the rest stop. It had taken two of them to get her up the ridge and she'd bitten down on every sound the whole way."There," Eli said, at twenty past. There was a woman sitting on a rock at the edge of the white, about four hundred yards out, with a bag beside her.She had been there

"Hello, Miss Cole. Thank you for being punctual."Maya stood on six miles of white ground with a phone against her ear and made herself breathe out before she said anything."Is she alive.""Yes. Comfortable, as these things go. She hasn't asked me a single question, which I confess I find unnerving." A small sound that might have been amusement. "Your mother is an extremely disciplined woman. I've had thirty-one years to develop a professional respect for her and I'd like it on record that I have.""I want to hear her.""No, you don't. You want to know, and I'm telling you, and if I put her on you'd get four seconds of a voice you don't recognise and you'd spend the rest of your life deciding whether it was really her." Crane sounded almost kind about it. "You've enough of that already, I should think."Maya closed her eyes.Wilder had moved in close enough to hear. Eli had gone very still. Behind them Ilsa was propped against the rock with her legs straight out in the dust, head tipp

The Second Half

Ilsa lasted longer than two hours. She lasted all day, in the back of the Bronco with the doors open and a wet cloth on her forehead, parked in the shade of the ridge while the white flat below them went from bearable to unbearable and back again. She slept in patches. She woke up sharp every time, which Maya found harder than if she'd been confused. They argued for six of those hours and got nowhere at all. Same three positions, round and round, and by four in the afternoon they'd stopped even changing the words."He'll do exactly what he says," Eli said, for the fourth time. "That's the thing nobody's taking seriously. He'll let me go, he'll let her mum go, he'll shut Oregon. He'll do all of it, because it costs him nothing and he gets a well that doesn't run dry.""And Maya lives in a room for fifteen years," Wilder said."Yeah.""Then it's not a deal, it's a price.""I know what it is." Eli's voice cracked. "I sat in one for three weeks and nobody put a needle in me and I still co

The Escort

Nobody moved for a long moment. Then Wilder started forward and Maya put her arm out flat across his chest without looking at him, and he stopped, which cost him something, and she felt exactly what it cost through the wire between them."Don't," she said. "He's mine."Dane kept his hands up the whole way in."I'm not armed," he said. "You can check. I'd rather you checked, actually, because I'd like the next ten minutes to be about something else.""Turn round."He turned. She hadn't expected him to.He turned round. Slowly, both arms out. He was wearing a jacket that had cost money once and a shirt that hadn't been washed, and the sling was gone off the arm Wilder had opened at the tree line, and it hung wrong now, stiff at the shoulder, and it would for the rest of his life.Maya looked at that shoulder for a second, at a permanent thing Wilder had done to him in the dark outside a pack house, and she waited to feel something about it. Satisfaction. Guilt. Anything.Nothing came. T
