Chapter One: Too Fat To Be Called Luna

Annabel's POV The bond hit me like a fist to the chest. One second I was standing in the back of the ceremony hall trying not to be noticed, the next there was something warm and golden wrapping itself around my ribs, squeezing — not painful, just present — and my eyes found him before my brain caught up with what was happening. Aldric. Alpha Aldric walked through the main doors and the room shifted the way it always did when he entered, three hundred wolves rearranging themselves unconsciously around his gravity. Broad-shouldered, dark-haired, jaw set like he'd been carved specifically to intimidate. The bond pulled taut between us and my breath caught. For one stupid, humiliating second, I smiled. I actually smiled. And trust me, I still hate myself for the smile. His eyes swept the room — and stopped on me. The change in his face happened fast. Too fast to hide. His chin pulled back, shoulders stiffening, the way you'd react if you reached into your pocket and found

Chapter Two: A New Life in Chains

Annabel's POV I ran until my lungs gave out.Past the training fields, where warriors mid-drill stopped to stare — not with sympathy, just with the flat eyes of people watching something they'd already filed away. Past the gardens where I used to chase fireflies with my father on summer nights, back when this pack felt like home.I didn't stop until the trees swallowed me whole.I collapsed against the nearest trunk and finally let it happen. The tears came out ugly — great heaving sobs I couldn't control. I pressed both hands against my chest like I could hold the pieces in place, but there was nothing to hold. The bond was gone. The place where it had lived for four minutes was a scorched hollow, and my wolf was somewhere inside me making a sound I'd never heard before.Grieving.I tilted my face toward the moon."I hope you're watching," I whispered. "Every single second of that. And I hate you for that"The moon said nothing back.I don't know how long I sat there. Long enough fo

Chapter Three: The Vampire Bargain

Annabel's POV Three months. My knees knew it better than my mind did — a permanent ache ground into the bone from marble floors and cold stone and the particular punishment of scrubbing surfaces that were just going to be dirty again tomorrow. I'd cleaned three hallways, two staircases, and a sitting room that hadn't seen actual use since Aldric's father was alive. Now I was on the fourth hallway, bucket beside me, brush moving in the same circular pattern I could do half-asleep. Which was useful, because I usually was. I heard the heels before I saw her. That specific click — sharp, deliberate, the rhythm of someone who wanted you to know they were coming and wanted you to have time to dread it. I didn't look up. I'd learned that. Keep your head down, keep your hands moving, give them nothing to work with. The heels stopped directly behind me. I kept scrubbing. "You missed a spot." I closed my eyes for exactly one second. Then I opened them and kept working. "I'm

Chapter Four: Into The Dark

Annabel's POV Four days. Four days of carrying what I'd heard like a stone lodged behind my sternum, heavy and sharp every time I breathed. Vampires. Omegas. Sacrifice. The words cycled on a loop underneath everything — underneath the scrubbing, the carrying, the keeping my face neutral while people laughed at me in hallways. I hadn't told anyone. Who would I tell? "Faster, Annabel." Lucy didn't look up from her station. "Alpha and Luna want breakfast now, not tomorrow." I scrubbed faster. Behind me the kitchen hummed with the usual morning noise — pots, voices, the clatter of plates being stacked. Underneath it, quieter, the whispers. They never fully stopped. I'd learned to hear them the way you learn to hear rain — constant enough that you stop registering it as an event. —still can't believe she's actually here— —rejected mate scrubbing pots, honestly— I kept my eyes on the sink. Made myself breathe. Made my hands move. Lucy appeared at my elbow and held out

Chapter Five: The King Who Buried a Mate

Kyrian's POVI run the border alone most nights now.Not because I need to. I have men for that — good men, trained men, men who would stand at that line until their legs gave out if I asked them to. But sleep and I have an arrangement these days where neither of us pretends the other is reliable, and running is better than lying in that bed listening to a house that's too quiet in all the rooms that used to not be.I smelled the blood before I saw her.Copper, sharp, laced under it something sweeter that made no sense against the wreckage of it — and every instinct I'd built over six years of ruling this territory told me to slow down, circle wide, treat it like a trap until proven otherwise. Rogues didn't bleed things out at my border and leave. Rogues didn't leave anything.I slowed down anyway. Circled wide anyway. Then I saw her at the bottom of the ravine and every strategic instinct I owned went quiet at once. She was in pieces — not literally, but close enough that the di

Chapter Six: Waking in a Stranger's Kingdom

Annabel's POV The first thing I noticed was that nothing hurt the way it should have. No fist pounding a door. No voice barking Omega through the wood. Just soft light coming through a window I didn't recognize, and sheets against my skin so clean they felt almost wrong, like my body had forgotten what that was supposed to feel like and needed a second to catch up. Then my body remembered the rest of it for me. The drop. The dark. Fangs and claws circling in the trees, a voice saying nothing personal like that made it kinder. I sat up too fast and the room tilted sideways and something sharp lit up along my ribs, and I understood, distantly, that I was alive in a way I hadn't been sure I'd stay. I made myself breathe through it. Small breaths. The kind that don't ask your ribs for permission. When the room stopped spinning I actually looked at it, and that was almost worse than the pain. This wasn't a servant's room. I knew servant's rooms — the cot, the

Chapter Seven: Two Strangers, One Bond

Annabel's POV The bond didn't ease when he walked in. It got worse. That pressure under my ribs pulled taut the second he crossed the threshold — not painful, just there, undeniable, the way a sound you can't unhear stays with you after the room goes quiet. I pressed my back against the headboard and told myself to breathe normally and failed at it quietly. Briony looked between us once. Read something in the air that I apparently hadn't hidden as well as I thought. She gathered her things with the unhurried efficiency of someone who'd learned exactly when to disappear. "I'll check the stitches this evening," she said to no one specifically, and slipped out. The door clicked shut. He didn't move immediately. Just stood there and looked at me — not the way Aldric had looked at me, not that slow disgusted inventory of everything wrong with my existence. Steadier than that. Like I was a problem he hadn't categorized yet and wasn't going to rush. I looked back. He was l

Chapter Eight: She Knows I'm Alive

Annabel's POV The question sat between us. "No," he said. And then, after a beat: "But I'd understand if you did anyway." There was something underneath that sentence. Something old and heavy that had nothing to do with me. I didn't pull on it — I had enough of my own weight to carry without reaching for someone else's. "The bond caught you off guard," I said carefully. "I can see it." "Yes." "You weren't expecting it." "No." He looked briefly at something past my shoulder — a fraction of a second, but I caught it. "The word mate used to mean something very specific to me. Something I had already—" He stopped. Started again. "It doesn't mean the same way now. I'm still working out what it means." I understood, without him saying it directly, that there had been someone. That the resolution he was describing was the permanent kind. The kind that leaves a specific shaped hollow in your chest that nothing fills correctly afterward. I understood that more than I wanted t

Chapter Nine: An Unwanted Convenience

Lord Reynard's POV I heard about the woman over breakfast. Third hand by the time it reached me — which meant it had already passed through at least two servants, acquired embellishments at each stop, and arrived at my table wearing the particular shine that stories collect when they involve a king doing something unexpected. Maren, my personal attendant, delivered it with the practiced casualness of someone who knew I valued information and had learned to package it as conversation rather than report. "The King brought someone in from the border two nights ago," she said, refilling my cup without being asked. "A woman. Found her at the eastern ravine, apparently. Carried her in himself." I said nothing. "Healers have been in and out of the guest wing since. The King hasn't left the corridor for long, from what I hear." A pause calibrated to seem like an afterthought. "Magnus ran a name this morning. Annabel something." I set my cup down. "That's all?" I asked. "That'

Chapter Ten: Questions the Council Won't Drop

Kyrian's POV The session was supposed to take an hour. Grain reserves. Border patrol rotations. A trade dispute between two merchants in the lower city that had somehow escalated to the point where both parties felt a king needed to be involved, which told me more about the merchants than it did about the dispute. Routine. The kind of morning that existed purely to remind you that running an empire was mostly administration interrupted occasionally by crisis. It took three hours because Reynard opened his mouth. He waited until the grain discussion had finished and the patrol schedule was half-resolved — waited with the patience of a man who had chosen his moment deliberately and was now deploying it with the studied casualness of someone who had rehearsed this exact tone and still hadn't quite landed it. "On a separate matter," he said, setting his papers down in the particular way that meant he was pretending this was an afterthought. "There's been some
