PRESENT DAYI didn’t know for how long I was crying in Nico’s arms. He held me delicately like he was scared he would hurt me if he held on too tight. His scent and his arms provided the comfort I needed to just break down. The sudden death of Connor affected me more than I cared to admit.“What now?” I asked as I pulled away from his arms and wiped my tears with my hands. I looked anywhere but at him. It was the first time he had seen me cry, and I hated showing weakness.People tended to use it against you every chance they got. Thinking you could trust anyone, but yourself, was just setting yourself up for failure. “The private jet is ready. We can leave for Dublin any time you want as long as you’re ready.”“I’m ready.” Ready to put that bastard to rest and forget all about him. “You need to change so you can be comfortable during the flight. I got you some clothes. Change while I talk to the event manager to tell him we’re canceling the event.”He handed me clothes I didn’t kn

PRESENT DAYWhen we arrived in Dublin, Nico made sure I turned my brain off. There was a car waiting for me as well as my father’s lieutenants and a few of his bodyguards. They led Nico and I into one car and we were taken to my family estate. He didn’t have to say a word to be there for me. The way he made sure he didn’t let me go was enough. His hand was either on the small of my back, on my thigh, around my waist, or our fingers were interlocked. At my family’s estate, Nico made sure all my bags were in my room. “Go and rest. I will plan the funeral.”“What about the diamond business–”“You don’t need to worry about that right now. Focus on the funeral in a few days and just relax. I’ll make sure no one bothers you here.”I nodded and went up the stairs slowly as I stared at portraits of Connor and Maeve on the walls. They looked happy at one point before he started cheating on her without someone younger and better-looking than her. Connor was always looking for someone better,

ELEVEN MONTHS AGOI was left shaken and confused once again. This time, I couldn’t ignore the glaring fact that someone had infiltrated my space and fucked me better than I had ever imagined in all my fantasies. When I finally came to my senses, I rushed to my bedroom, grabbed a robe and wore it. I rushed to my patio with a knife in hand trying to see if he was there. But there was no one there and there was no other way out of the building.I was on the top floor. Unless he jumped, he had to have disappeared into thin air. This is when I started to question my feelings and most of all, question reality. I started to think for a second that the man was not real and he was only in my imagination. But when I went to the bathroom, it was glaringly obvious that the stranger was real. It wasn’t just because his earthy scent was still lingering on my skin or the fact that I could still hear him whisper into my ear.It was because of the obvious handprint around my neck. It was the first ti

The day of the funeral was a blur. There was a service in a private part of the cemetery. Connor was not religious, but for some reason, there was a priest sending him off to the other side. The bastard was probably going to burn in hell. Not even the priest or the Bible were enough to get Connor into heaven. With all the sins he had committed, he was probably already in hell even before he was buried. I was at the very first line in a long black bondage dress and a black trench coat on top. It was drizzling a little, and Nico was holding an umbrella over me. He was in a black suit and a black trench coat as well. To my left was Serena in dark clothing as well, and next to her was Nero. Enzo was standing on the other side of Nico, and Maeve was next to her. The mood was somber, but I knew no one actually said Connor was dead.He had a lot of enemies, including his wife. Speaking of Maeve, I wondered if she knew she was about to be replaced by Becky, his assistant. If she didn’t kno

PRESENT DAYMaeve was sulking in the garden while smoking a packet of cigarettes. I had never seen her smoke like that before. She also had a bottle of wine and a glass to go with it. It was late, and she was barefoot and still in funeral clothes. She must have sensed me approaching. “I actually thought the man loved me. How stupid could I possibly be? I thought I was special to him–the exception. But he treated me the same way he treated your mother–like shit. I’m so dumb.”She started laughing at herself. “I almost changed the man’s diapers. I was ready to do it all. I was ready to love him regardless of the infidelity. I took care of him while he was sick. I clothed him, bathed him, fed him, and where was that whore? She was enjoying his fucking money.” She let out a loud scream and threw her glass to the ground until it shattered into pieces. She reminded me why I would never leave my fate at the hands of a man. Not only were they liars and cheaters, but they seemed to genuinel
