Chapter 1 The Truth

"You can hear me! You can hear me, right, Mom?" The voice spoke again, belaying an unmistakable undercurrent of worry and panic.I brought my hand to my flat belly. "Yes, I can.""Yes! A reply! It's going to be different this time around! We don't have much time. You have to move! Now!" The voice was now filled with joy.I inhaled deeply as memories crashed into my mind like waves. My family was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. So, my father wanted to make me sleep with our business partner, an obese guy called Mr. West.I risked my life to get out of his room only to run into another. It was dark, and all I could remember from that encounter was a pair of deep-set eyes. When dawn came, I fled before that man woke up.My father was livid when he found out I hadn't slept with Mr. West, but he started singing a different tune when he saw the marks on my neck. He stopped making me sleep with Mr. West, but he secretly pulled up footage of that night. That explained everything.

Chapter 2 An Act

I frowned in dismay."Don't worry, Mom. I can help. The Shaws are going to attend some upscale wine-and-dine in a couple of days. They asked around and found out Anthony might show up as well. That's your ticket to freedom. We just need to lay low until then."A wine-and-dine? My heart squeezed. That meant I'd have to meet the man who could decide my baby's and my fate under the Shaws' supervision.Just as I was drawing up plans with my little tactician, someone knocked on the door. "Are you alright, Diana? I made something for you that'll be good for the baby." Selune's cloying voice echoed from beyond the door. Our conversation stopped immediately. My baby warned me, "She's definitely got something planned. Be on the lookout, Mom!"I took a deep breath and put on a nonchalant smile as I opened the door. Selune was holding a bowl, scanning my face with concern. She looked as if she was evaluating how pristine a breeding mare was."I'm fine, just a little tired. I was going to ca

Chapter 3 At the Event

"Dad, I remember you bringing up a… What was it again? Oh! Yes, a wine-and-dine in a couple of days."Mike looked at me sharply. "How do you know that, and why do you want to know about it?"Rachel Willow, my stepmother, and Selune shot me looks of judgment. I put on the perfect look of trepidation and anticipation, my fingers twirling the hem of my shirt for good measure."I-I heard it's a very upscale event with tons of powerful people there. I've never attended that kind of event. Now that I'm pregnant, it'll be hard for me to go out and about in a couple of months. Can't I go? Staying home all the time can be suffocating."I made sure my voice trailed off the longer I spoke, adding in a dash of hurt as I continued, "It'll be even better if I get to know someone who can help our business."That did it for Mike. After all, he was trying to expand his connections, and the event was an opportunity. Besides, he figured that keeping me close was better than leaving me alone at home

Chapter 4 Her Plan

I swung my arm down and got out of her grip with a little finesse. That caught Selune by surprise. Then, I didn't waste time on her and trotted over to Anthony, calculating the perfect angle to bump into him.The second I hit that perfect range, I splashed my juice precisely onto his sleeve. "Oh, no!"The venue went dead silent. Mike had turned stark white. He immediately darted over and grabbed my arm. At the same time, he kept apologizing humbly, "I'm really sorry, Mr. Quinton. She's always been a bit of an airhead."Anthony frowned at the stain on his sleeve and scrutinized us coldly. I pulled away from my father's grip and stepped forth to bow. When I spoke, I sounded terrified and teary. "I'm really sorry, Mr. Quinton! It was an accident! I'll pay for the suit."I raised my head and looked at him with tearful eyes. Yes, I knew I must look stupid and disheveled with my frumpy dress. He looked at my face before looking down, his gaze lingering on my baby bump for a while. Some

Chapter 5 Saved

"Ow!" I groaned in pain.Selune held me tightly without thinking. "What's wrong?""My stomach hurts…" I fluttered my eyes shut as I whispered weakly. My ailing pregnant woman act made us stop at the entrance and blocked the way out. Anthony stopped in his tracks, noticing the commotion. So, it was a panicked and angry Selune who tried to drag me away from him. "Get up! You're in the way!"My eyes snapped open as I mustered all my strength to get away from her. Then, I stood up and darted straight for Anthony. It took Selune a few seconds to snap out of it. When she did, she immediately tried to pull me back. However, I was already standing in front of Anthony. I was so close that I could smell the scent of sandalwood coming from him. I looked up at him with red rimmed eyes, my face pale and my gaze filled with a silent plea.My voice wasn't loud, but it was shaking from agitation. Nonetheless, I made sure I spoke clearly enough for him to hear every single word coming out of m

Chapter 6 A Modicum of Happiness

"Take this. You'll catch a cold." His fingers brushed against my fingertips, causing my heart to skip a beat. The car stopped before an extravagant mansion built near a mountain. His assistant opened the car door. "We're here, Ms. Shaw. Mr. Quinton has arranged your accommodations. A doctor will be coming for an amnio in the near future."I followed the assistant into the mansion. He arranged for me to live in the second-floor main bedroom. There was a bathroom and closet inside. Still, it was the recliner that sat beside the window with a thick layer of padding on top of the seat that stole my attention."Press the button on the bedside table if you need anything. A staff member will come to help you." He retreated from the room, leaving me alone."It's really nice here, Mom. We're finally safe!" my baby exclaimed with joy.I approached the window and looked at the garden. Although I was free from my family's grasp, there was still a lingering sense of unease in my heart. Antho

Chapter 7 Wendy Wood

I nodded. "Yes, and you are?"The woman sneered. "Wendy Wood, Anthony's fiancée. How dare you get pregnant with his child and move into his mansion, you uncultured harlot!""She's lying, Mom! Dad doesn't have a fiancée! She's just one of his obsessive admirers!" my baby grumped angrily. My heart sank. This woman was here to challenge me. "Perhaps you've misunderstood, Ms. Wood? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Anthony doesn't have a fiancée."Wendy stepped forth and raised her hand. "I misunderstood? How dare you talk back to me, you bitch!"I wrapped my arms around my belly and took a large step back. Her hand swung on nothing, making her angrier."You think you can latch on to someone so out of your league just because you have his baby? Don't even think about it! Anthony's mine, and so is the spot as his wife!""Don't waste your time on her, Mom! Take the hit and let Dad see your swollen cheek when he comes back!" the baby suggested.I heard him o

Chapter 8 Investigation

Anthony's eyes were filled with genuine love for me, and it drew me in. After that evening, he became even more attentive. He'd attend every prenatal checkup with me, arranging everything beforehand so I wouldn't have to wait in line for even a minute.During the checkup, he would hold my hand tightly. When we heard the baby's heartbeat, I saw a rare smile on his lips. After one of the checkups, we happened to pass by a baby shop. Anthony took me inside and picked up a tiny baby shoe, gesticulating with his hands. "The baby's going to look adorable wearing this."Then, he picked up a small onesie with a little bear printed on it. "This one's nice. It's soft. The baby will feel comfortable in it." He picked every single item earnestly. It was so childlike and so unlike him that it hopelessly endeared me to him.Crib, cot, clothes, and toys—he'd chosen every single baby item meticulously. The sales assistant gave us an envious smile. "You really care about your wife and her baby, sir

Chapter 9 Cherish Life

After they found out I was pregnant with Anthony's child, they cooked up a plan to get rid of me while keeping the child. They would have Selune pretend to be the child's mother and latch on to the Quintons.Anthony read through the entire file. Toward the end of it, he was shaking with rage and baying for blood. He clenched his fists, and his eyes were filled with bloodlust."Mike, Rachel, Selune, you're dead!" And so, he ordered his men to attack the Shaws' business.Shaw Group's stock prices plummeted, the company's business partners canceled their contracts, and the banks were demanding debt settlement. Mike went around asking for favors, but he was met with closed doors wherever he went. Soon, he started to panic.Rachel's assets were frozen, and Selune was expelled from school due to her misconduct. In mere days, the Shaws fell from grace hard. When Mike and Rachel were backed into a corner with no way out, they wanted to kidnap me, to use me as a hostage to make demands fro
