The letter that finally disturbed Redoak's long peace arrived in the family's eighth quiet year, and it came, fittingly, from Draven's daughter Liora — now well established as Ashgrove's Alpha, her correspondence carrying none of her father's old caution, only grim, direct urgency.Rhys. Sable. I would not trouble you with this if I believed it minor. A delegation arrived at our border three weeks ago, claiming scholarly purpose, requesting access to Ashgrove's old archives — specifically, records concerning the Thorne bloodline and anything connected to what they called "the Marrow inheritance." I denied them, recognizing the name from my father's own history with Sorrel Thorne, and had them escorted from our territory. Two nights later, our archive building burned. We recovered what we could. Among the ashes, my trackers found a ring, silver, dark stone, old craftsmanship — matching, as closely as I can determine from my father's old accounts, the description once given of Aldric Th

Three years later.Halden stood before the Redoak council at twenty-one, the same training yard that had once witnessed her mother's first uncontrolled shift now hosting a considerably more deliberate milestone — her formal petition to begin training toward eventual pack leadership, the first of her generation to seek such a path."I've watched this pack my whole life," she said, addressing the assembled council with a steadiness that reminded Sable, watching from the gathered crowd, powerfully of Rhys at his own transition decades earlier. I went to the Redoak Tavern alone on a Thursday in February, three months after we buried Rhys.I hadn't been inside in years. The sign had been repainted twice. The stools were new, and the bar had been sanded down and re-oiled until it shone. But the mirror behind it was the same one. I knew it the second I stepped through the door, because I felt my stomach drop the way it had forty years ago.The young woman behind the bar looked up. She couldn't have been more than twenty-five. "Luna Sable," she said, and straightened like I'd caught her stealing. "Can I get you something?""Whiskey," I said. "Neat. And please, just Sable."I took the third stool from the end. My stool. Nobody had told me it would still be there. She poured it and slid it across, then had the good sense to go find something to wipe at the far end of the bar.I held the glass in both hands. It gave my hands a reason to stay still. I had thought that in this room once, a lifetime ago, a girl of twenty-three with a
