I. The Week Before The week before the Harmon Center opened, Eleanor did not sleep well. This was not anxiety in the ordinary sense — not the jagged, unproductive sleeplessness of someone afraid of failure, but a different quality of wakefulness, the kind that came from carrying something almost to its destination and feeling, in the final steps, the full weight of what you were holding. She lay in the dark beside Daniel and listened to the house — the furnace’s low register, the third stair settling, the October wind doing something deliberate with the silver maples outside — and thought about all the things that had led to Saturday. She thought about Gerald Fitch’s phone call in January and the anger she’d let herself feel because Daniel had told her to, which had turned out to be the anger that got things done. She thought about Céline in Paris asking, in four seconds of silence, what the closing date was. She thought about Catherine Harmon-Webb’s three-page letter and the trembl

There is a quality to the seventh year of anything — a marriage, a house, a town, a self — that the earlier years don’t have and can’t manufacture, because it is made entirely of what has actually happened rather than what was planned or hoped or feared. The first year is discovery, the world rearranging itself around the fact of a decision. The second is adjustment, the decision proving itself in the details. She drove to the estate in September. Not because she’d planned to, not because there was a crisis or an occasion, but because the seventh year had produced in her a quality of retrospective attention she hadn’t had in the earlier years — the desire to look at things she’d left behind not with nostalgia, which implied wanting them back, but with the honest eye of someone who had traveled far enough to see the starting point clearly. She hadn’t been to the estate in eight months. The longest gap since Millhaven. She had noticed this without alarm, had noted it in the ledger as evidence of something healthy — that the estate had become, finally, simply the place where her mother kept some of her things and not the place where Eleanor’s relationship to herself was determined. She arrived at noon. The drive was long enough to be a transition — the landscape shifting from the river valley to the broader Connecticut countryside, the stone walls and the maples in
