Jaxen POVThe brands kept pinging back the same answer.Scarlett wouldn’t take a single damn thing. Not the house my assistant lined up. Not the jewelry. High-end, limited, stupidly expensive—none of it moved her. What the hell had changed? The woman in my memory used to light up over the smallest thoughtful gift. This one looked at seven-figure presents as if they were dirty laundry.Maybe if I handed it over myself. That thought wouldn’t leave me alone. So I showed up at the biggest charity auction of the year in the city. The night where old money and new packs rubbed shoulders under chandeliers, and every alpha in three states pretended not to size each other up.The last lot was a crown, hundreds of diamonds, old European workmanship, and the piece that made even jaded collectors sit forward. The opening bid was already insane. Most people dropped out fa

Delaney POVI was still in work clothes, bag over my shoulder, when I spotted Jaxen standing under the streetlight outside Scarlett’s building.I ducked behind the nearest tree and fumbled for my phone, thumbing her number repeatedly.Come on, pick up.Pick up.No answer.“Delaney.”My name, in that quiet, controlled voice, made me jump so hard I almost dropped the phone.I looked up.Jaxen was right there, close enough that the cold fir scent of him reached me even through the city smells of exhaust and damp concrete. He held out a box.“Give this to Scarlett.”I stared at it, then at him.“What is it?”“Something she likes.”That was all.No explanation, no threat, just the flat statement.I took the box because the alternative—him still standing there when she came down—felt worse.

Scarlett POVThe unknown number lit up my screen, and I almost let it go to voicemail. My thumb slipped.Damn it.“Scarlett,” Regina’s voice cracked on the other end, high and shaky like she’d just seen a ghost. “Jaxen showed up at the old house tonight.”I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. Of course he did. That man moved like smoke, quiet until he was right on top of you.Even the sound of his name still carried that faint trace of cedar and rain-soaked earth I could never quite scrub out of my memory.“What did he want?” I asked, already tired.“He told me, straight-up warned me, not to set you up with anyone. Not Jimmy, not anybody.”I let out a short, humorless laugh. “You’re kidding.”“Do I sound like I’m kidding? I’m not young anymore, Scarlett. I can’t handle him storming i

Jaxen POVThe crown sat on the edge of my desk like a damn accusation.Delaney Willes had walked out hours ago, but that cheap tiara she’d left behind still glared at me under the office lights.I’d bought the thing, thinking Scarlett might actually look at me for once. She’d refused it cold. Now it just felt pointless. Empty. The same hollow ache that had been chewing at my chest since last night’s jealousy spiked all over again. My wolf paced hard under my skin, restless and pissed.I wanted to track her down right then and demand why she wouldn’t take anything from me. Instead, I forced myself to open the file Charlotte had just dropped on my desk.Scarlett had hired two bodyguards. That detail landed wrong.I already knew the person who’d driven her home last night.First thought: she was in real trouble and needed protection. When I asked Char

Scarlett POVThe second his voice hit my ear, it was like a murder of crows exploded right behind my eyes: black wings, sharp beaks, pure chaos. My stomach dropped hard and fast, the way it does when an elevator cable snaps. Post-divorce, Jaxen had turned into a full-time chaos generator, and I wondered if I’d done something truly unforgivable in a past life to deserve this level of haunting. What the hell did a man get out of stalking his ex-wife like this? The low, familiar rumble of his voice still carried that same dark edge that used to make the fine hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even through a phone line halfway across the world. My pulse hammered against my throat.I could almost smell him, that expensive woodsy cologne mixed with dark wildness underneath, the scent that used to cling to my sheets and my clothes no matter how many times I washed them.I hung up without a word and went straight fo
