Chapter 1 The Passenger Seat

Emilia's POVBy the time George Matthews and Kayley Greene finally came downstairs, I was in so much pain I was almost numb. The passenger door suddenly opened. "Same as usual. Kayley gets carsick. Give her the seat."I bit down on my lip hard. Sweat poured down my face. "George, I can't hold on anymore."But he did not budge at all. I practically crawled to the backseat.Kayley's voice was hoarse from crying. She looked at me guiltily. "It's my fault for taking your seat. I'll heat the seat for you. You'll feel better."She then began adjusting the buttons skillfully.George had bought this car with the first real money he ever earned. Back then, he said I would never have to squeeze onto the subway again. But ever since Kayley started getting carsick, she was always given priority for the front seat. Even when I was there.I slumped weakly in the back seat, unable to utter a single word.We arrived at the hospital early in the morning. There was only one doctor on duty in th

Chapter 2 Breaking Up

When I came out of surgery, they were already gone.Kayley sent me a photo. In it, she was sitting in the passenger seat of George's car, eating snacks. Potato chip crumbs were scattered everywhere. She even had a caption. "The corridor is freezing. We'll be waiting for you in the car."I never knew that George, with his severe OCD, could tolerate this level of mess. After all, he had never been able to stand me eating even a single piece of bread in his car.I chuckled softly and liked her picture. Then I called the wedding planner, "Cancel the wedding."A hint of regret could be heard in her voice. "You've been planning the wedding for almost two years. Why?"I looked at the intimate couple in the photo and gave a bitter smile. "Because I don't want to get married anymore."With the cancellation, my obsession with marrying George vanished as well.I did not get in the car and hailed a taxi home instead. When George came home in the middle of the night, his tone was clearly

Chapter 3 Leaving Him

He fell silent instantly, and a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.He stared at me for a couple of seconds, then chuckled coldly. "Emilia Morris, are you doing this to pressure me to marry you? This won't work on me. I have a lot of work to do. I don't have time to think about the wedding, let alone play games with you."He had time to take Kayley shopping. He had time to take her on trips. But as his girlfriend, I had to wait in line just to argue with him. At that moment, I laughed from sheer exasperation.George thought I had calmed down, and his tone softened slightly. "I'll pretend I didn't hear what you said. Forget about this. I have a meeting soon. I need to pick my secretary up."It was obvious who that secretary was.I turned to pack my bags to move back to my old home.A female colleague accidentally posted gossip in the company's group chat. "I just saw Mr. Matthews shopping with Kayley in a lingerie store. He even helped her with the straps!"The message was de

Chapter 4 Accusing Her

The next day, I went to George's office with my resignation letter, just as promised. My colleagues gathered at the door and gave me strange looks. George sat in his office chair. His face was terribly grim.Just as I was wondering what was going on, Kayley grabbed me and said exasperatedly, "We were besties. How could you betray the company just to oust me? If you told me you stole the company secrets, I wouldn't have called the police."I shook her hands off. "What are you talking about? When did I steal anything?"The next second, George slammed his fist on the table and shot up from his seat. "Still trying to deny it? Who else could it be but you? You just couldn't stand Kayley taking your place. That's why her project is gone overnight!"I froze. Anger instantly overshadowed my reason. "So what if I stole it? That's my project!"George seemed to take my words as an admission of guilt. His gaze turned even more mocking. Then he ordered coldly, "Search her."Before I could ev

Chapter 5 Calling the Police

Third-person POVGeorge was listening to Kayley's rundown on the project, but his mind was elsewhere. She cleared her throat. "Mr. Matthews, are you still thinking about Emilia?"He gave a dry hum. "Could I have really misunderstood her? She's always treated the company like her home. Always dutiful and responsible. Would she really sell company secrets to competitors?"He thought of Emilia's aggrieved expression. It felt like a thorn in his heart.Upon hearing that, a hint of guilt flashed in Kayley's eyes. She let out a dry laugh. "I didn't think she'd do that too. Perhaps she just hated that I took her place."George comforted her gently, "You have a right to your career plans. How could it have been your fault? Besides, Emilia and I are planning to get married. It'll be easier for her to stay at home."Kayley's smile stiffened. Something dark flashed across her eyes.Suddenly, a team of police officers arrived at the office. "Hello, someone reported a theft."Kayley's brea

Chapter 6 Blocking Him

George's mind went blank when he realized Emilia had blocked him. "No way…"He refused to believe it and called her several more times. But every call failed. He sent a text on WhatsApp. "It was just a misunderstanding. Did you really have to block me? Can't we talk things out?"He tapped send. Only one tick appeared. "Emilia…" Kayley could barely hide the smile tugging at her lips, though she tried her best to stay calm. "Seems like Emilia's really mad. I'll go to your place and apologize to her tonight. She's nice. She'll definitely forgive me."George was not listening to her at all. His mind was in turmoil because Emilia had never blocked him before, nor would she ignore him for long. After getting off work that evening, Kayley got in the car with him. "I'll apologize to Emilia. She'll forgive us. But I really can't lose this job."George became even more irritated. His voice was cold. "I've made up my mind. No one can change it. You went too far."He vented all his anger

Chapter 7 The Best Decision

Emilia's POVThree months had passed since then. I was happy working at my new company.George also returned the 800,000 to me. Along with it came a note. "I know you're innocent. When are you coming back?"A belated apology meant nothing. I did not reply and threw myself back into work. One peaceful afternoon, the wedding planner called again, "Ms. Morris, can I confirm some details of the wedding dress with you to arrange for the customization?"I asked, puzzled, "Didn't I already cancel the wedding?"The wedding planner explained, "But Mr. Matthews said to proceed with it. He said you two were just fighting and would make up soon. He is quite dedicated. He's been supervising everything. You're so lucky."I almost burst out laughing at that. If he had truly made me happy, I would not have left my home country.I replied with utmost seriousness, "Please tell him that I will not marry him. He can have the wedding with whoever he likes. It has nothing to do with me."I hung up

Chapter 8 New Life

George squinted at me. Clearly, he had not expected me to say that. "Emilia, must you be so cruel over just a small issue? Is it just because I made you pay 800,000?"Then he whipped out his phone and transferred me one million and asked, "Is that enough?"I slapped his face the next second. The air went so still that I could hear my heartbeat.George pressed his tongue against his cheek. He showed no signs of anger. "Or is it something else? Just tell me. I can explain. Then we'll move on." His tone was nonchalant, as if this could be resolved within the day like all our previous arguments. But now, that would never happen again.I forced a bitter smile. "There's too much evidence proving that your heart has changed. I don't want to talk about it anymore because it's pointless now.""I haven't!" George denied it outright. "Emilia, what makes you think I've changed my mind? I've been so serious about you. Can't you feel it?"I laughed out loud, then scrolled through some of Kayl
