Chapter 1

When I tapped on Alex's account and transferred the money over, Alex acted as if he was upset about what just happened. "It's alright, Jim. It's my treat…"He had barely finished when Sally snatched his phone and accepted the transfer, like I'd get my money back if she was a second too slow."Take it," Sally said. "You don't have money after buying those stocks last month."She really knew every detail of his life even though they had only met six months ago, and more than what she knew about me.After the movie started, I was about to tell them it was time to go in when Sally's eyes lit up, exclaiming, "Hey, that's a new profile picture! It's that new anime character, right?""So you know about it too?" Alex laughed heartily, and they started to talk loudly without a care.I sat there, my outstretched hand hanging in the air as I was completely ignored. It wasn't the first time—Sally had just met Alex no more than six months ago, but they really hit it off when they did, neve

Sally shrugged, nonchalant. "Either would be fine since you won't get it anyway."Alex chuckled. "Remember that time he fell asleep? He was still in his seat after we were all gone. He didn't even know that someone had robbed him.""Exactly. He doesn't even like to watch movies—what's the point of picking the one he likes?"I was white with rage listening to them make a joke of my embarrassment, even though it was Alex who had insisted that I go with them even after I worked until two in the morning. It was a thirteen-hour shift, and I was so tired that I fell asleep.I couldn't find my phone when I woke up, and with both Sally and Alex gone, I was left stranded in the middle of nowhere at half past three in the morning.Naturally, neither of them came back for me, and I was still really upset about it, warning them to never talk about it again. But they did and kept repeating it like my pain gave them joy. That was when Sally finally noticed that I was upset, but she frowned a

Sally never came home that night, and I didn't ask her for once, while also enjoying a rare good night's sleep. Then, the door swung open loudly the next day. "Time for breakfast, Jim," Sally said, walking straight toward me.She clearly had more to say, but I avoided her and went straight to the bathroom.Sally paused and suddenly laughed as she turned to Alex with a look of resignation. "You won. He is being paranoid."Alex grinned smugly, raising a brow. "Then I'll take it?" Sally nodded. "A bet's a bet."Alex went straight to the study and returned with my camera. It was the camera my father had given me when I was eighteen. My groggy head hurt as I growled, "What are you doing?"Alex was taken aback and replied meekly, "It's our bet prize… If you're upset, I can return it.""Then return it," I said, reaching out. Before I got the camera, Sally grabbed my arm. "A bet's a bet. Don't be a sore loser.""How is your bet any of my business?" I retorted flatly, distant lik

I sighed softly and didn't argue.I wasn't upset at all.Looking up at Sally calmly, I said, "Let's just break up."She froze, her eyes wide with disbelief.Still, she soon laughed as if she was unafraid, while looking at me like I was an immature child. "Just stop already."Alex also came over, patting my back as if he was my best friend in the world. "Trust me, my friend—you're just not in your right mind. You'll understand that once you cool off."He sure talked like he was being considerate, when he was really cleverly blaming me for everything.I had always trusted him, and for what? Things only got worse between me and Sally, with her always taking his side while our arguments kept increasing.Shoving him off, I growled, "We're no longer friends, Alex."Seeing Alex looking absolutely helpless and tearful, Sally charged at me furiously, not caring about rationality as she snapped, "Why do you have to be so difficult?! Are you only happy after you hurt every person who's e

Chapter 5

Hanging up, I took out my suitcase which I had used since high school.Sally had always joked that she'd still be with me even after I stopped using it, and I thought it sounded far-fetched.And now, it was proven to be far-fetched indeed.Packing everything from clothes and ID to the camera, I left this place I'd never miss.-Meanwhile, Sally and Alex had gone hiking on a nearby hill, chasing each other and not looking upset at all.Arriving at the top, she even posted a photo of herself with Alex on social media, their cheeks almost touching just to show it to me.However, I was busy disembarking from my flight, relieved and rejoicing in my decision."Jim!"My parents were there to receive me, even bringing the family dog, Rumpy, whose tail was wagging like rotor blades.Smiling in slight embarrassment, I asked, "Really? Rumpy too?""Gotta bring the whole family along!" My father, Bob, said as he loaded my suitcase into the car, while my mother, Lydia, hugged my arm.As

I replied nonchalantly as if to a child, "That doesn't matter."Those words came much easier than I thought, and I continued toward the washroom to wash my hands.Sally paused and took a deep breath like it took a lot to deal with me, but it was the same for me over the last six months.I was the one dealing with her finding me bothersome and snapping at me all the time.I was also the one dealing with her taking Alex's side instead of mine and always accusing me of being the problem. And I really had enough.Eventually, Sally spoke again. "You don't have to get that upset, Jim. I know you just want an apology, don't you? I'm—""Don't bother," I said, cutting her short. There were others there, so I sidestepped to head outside, and the air certainly felt much fresher."Jim, listen to me."Alex had suddenly snatched Sally's phone, his breath ragged as he exclaimed, "I really only consider Sally a friend—I didn't know you minded it that much. I'm apologizing now, alright? I'll

Chapter 7

This time, Sally didn't turn around, and she could feel the sweat all over her back. After all, she realized that she had screwed up big time. Before Alex came clean, she could still lie to herself that nothing had happened—that Jim was merely paranoid. But now, the cold hard truth was right there before her eyes.Sally could only pray that Alex didn't bother Jim about this…Driving south for over five hours, she finally arrived in Southdam, where Jim was.She first bought a bouquet of flowers and groomed herself before heading to Jim's home. However, she had just gotten out of the car when she froze upon seeing another woman alight from Jim's car.It was clear that they were close with the way they smiled at each other, and that ignited a fire in her chest that overwhelmed her mind as well.In a split second, even before she knew what was happening, she leaped up to the other woman maniacally, ready to slap her across the face!-While I was stunned by the unexpected attack

Sally turned pale right then, staring at me wide-eyed as if she didn't recognize me. "You're so cold… Finding another woman in just two months? Have you thought about me? What did I even do?"I pursed my lips. "Your worst mistake is still asking me about your mistake. First of all, why would you pay everything for Alex? Why did you keep lending him money?"She paused for a moment and looked impatient as she argued, "Are you really getting petty over a movie ticket and coffee?""There it is," I pointed out. "Still calling me petty when it's not even about the money—it's the fact that you're siding with him. He's the one you chose between us, and you knew I'd get upset, but you still did it."Sally snorted. "There's nothing between us, believe me."Though she was being stubborn, she wasn't even looking me in the eye.I sighed and held up my phone in front of her. "Here's Alex's text messages. Argue your way out of this."Sally stiffened, her neck janky like a rusted joint as she
